Guess I'll just have to bury myself in Legion until February >.>

Avoiding spoilers is going to be a chore.

This game has a lot of respect for old school smt. Demon negotiation is back, eveyone has a mellee weapon and some sort of projectile firearm, harkenin back to classic smt. They integrate both with the usual persona weakness knockdown extra turn system (yes negotiation too) for by far the best gameplay in either series so far. Also finally we get curse damage nukes and not just mudo style IK moves that never work.
I like the idea of negotiation but in the games that I played (SMT Nocturne, Persona 1 and 2) I always found it really tedious. Have they changed the system at all or is it still answer random questions/throw money at them and hope they join you?
It never was really random but it was inconsistent, still there was a pattern. This time around it is somewhat easier to follow the course of the conversation, but I am playing it in Japanese so who knows how the translation will be. Couple extra things improve it though. Once you have caught a persona, negotiation with that species becomes much easier, also they don't ask you for items, at least not so far 33 hours in, just dialogue choices. Finally, you can just hurt them a lot and eventually they'll beg for their life and you can instantly recruite them that way. It takes a bit more time and you may lose more life that way but it basically ensures you will get the persoa you want...as long as you don't kill it anyways.

I know it wasn't actually random, but you did have to work it out through trial and error and then remember each demon's preferences. I still have horrible flashbacks of grinding for demon cards in Persona 2. And asking for money always drove me crazy in Nocturne "Can I have some money. Thanks, on second though I don't want to join you, bye."

What you've described has me a lot more optimistic.

After a bit more advancemnt, more stuff is revealed!

So, as you advance your co-op ranks, your team member gain skills where if you make an error in negotiation, there is a chance they will jump in and help negotiate, each in their own personal style, from seduction to threats to acting like a cute cat.

I'll probably buy it, sometime. Maybe. I'd rather play SMT IV Apocalypse at the moment. I really dig the art direction though, it looks good.

Does that help in negotiations? Ill try it when the chips are down next time.

How are you finding the characters and story so far? at least in relation to P3 and 4 i.e ones I have played. Must admit I am still not a huge fan of their design they feel weaker than 3 and 4 but I dont dislike them either so a good story and characterisation could do wonders for me and although its not an area Persona has lacked in (even the fighters imo) I am just wondering how in your opinion it stacks up in these regards.

Yeah it calms down an angry shadow. It is quite helpful. Though it is done by the char who is a literal cat so if you aren't it might not work lol.

And man, chars are so amazing that I have trouble picking favorites. I'm about to finish the third dungeon at over 50 hours so the game is just huge as well. Not sure where the design issues you have stem from but their phantom thief looks are by far the best combat looks in the series. Just cool and thematic and oozing style. Same goes for their persona as well. The latest char I got seems to draw from hokuto no ken and mad max stylizings, combining a biker suit with shoulder spikes, knuckles and a revolver pistol. Can't have enough. They look much more standing out than in other games where only what type of customization over the same uniform you did separated you.

Yo, anyone else think this game's music is fucking baller?

Like, enough to surpass P3 and P4. I don't think there's a single track that I don't like this time around.

They have a lot of vocal stuff and the main theme which is the insturmental durin boss runs has been stuck in my head from day 1. Dangerous levels of qualty. There's a night song too, beyond classy and atmospheric. Reminded me of the snake eater song but more wistfull.

Turns out the support/analysis party member shares a VA with Madoka. All of the puella magi fans out there are blessed indeed.

After an amazing 150 hours, I finished my first playthrough. I took my time and tried to do everything possible so it took a while.

I never say this about games but it applies here. I think this will set a new bar all rpgs and maybe games in general will be measured by. It goes beyond good into an area of unimaginable levels of good and then keeps getting better and better and there's always more when you think it fiished. I've never played an rpg which had over 100 hours for the basic plot to finish without asking you to do mundane stuff. But no, this game fills 150 hours worth of engaging content somehow. Literally multiple other games worth of quality and quantity, when usually is one or the other.

Do not miss it.
