An Age of Sigmar Path to Glory/Warhammer 40k Throne of Skulls scenario. 100 Champions of the Chaos gods enter the arena, but only one champion and one god can reign supreme. But it's not just the other champions you need to worry about. These are daemon worlds after all, so one has to watch the environment after all. Of course, the gods aren't above....assisting their chosen champions if they can get away with it, with relics stashed around the arena and maybe the occasional daemon incursion to make things more interesting.

balancing player interactions and the environmental factors is probably a big ask, you don't want to make the environment more dangerous than other players, but you've got 4 different play styles to work with, and you can add various sub-styles cause there's bound to be plenty of times when you have champions of the same god facing off. The ephemeral nature of a daemon world means the map makers can go absolutely nuts with the map design (within reason, you do need something that 100 people can play on).
I can get behind this. It's also quite lore friendly.

Though I would personally just keep it Pre-Age of Sigmar and set it in the Chaos Wastes. Chaos Warbands are constantly doing this kind of nutiness to see who gets to be the Next Big Thing in the eyes of the Gods.

That should definitely have limb removal mechanics, perhaps poison and disease to deal with for funsies... all very graphic and disturbing it must be, no half measures, go all in.
Definitely. I want people to feel just a little squeamish doing this.

Isn't it obvious? It's in the name.

A Battle Royale-themed Battle Royale game. You're all on an island, with certain segments of it becoming no-go areas one after the other. Everybody gets a backpack with a random weapon (or survival item). If more than one is left by the end of the time limit, nobody wins!
Trufact; there's even a tabletop RPG based entirely off of that movie...

It was deeply flawed as a show, but hot damn would the premise of the recent anime "Juuni Taisen" really be awesome to me as a game.

I suppose it'd basically be like a Hero-based game, in the same vein of overwatch. release 12 superpowered humans into a huge, empty city, and have them fight until one is left alive, with a time limit compelling everyone to find each other quickly.

admittedly, I'm not really the "go-to" guy when it comes to knowing what makes multiplayer games work.

Mine's either a Vietnam shooter where you/your squad choose to be either NVA, Viet Cong, South Vietnamese, American or Australian, and you're dumped in the Vienam jungle fighting your way to an extraction point, and every other player appears to you as someone on the other side- giving the impression you're deep in enemy territory surrounded by enemies.

Either that or a swashbuckling late 1930's treasure hunt where you're all adventurers looking for an ancient relic, and if 2 or more teams are alive when it's found, it becomes a mad rush to be the team to deliver that relic safely to a randomly picked museum of many at the edge of the map. There'll be more vehicles than usual in this one, and more, smaller island forcing more river /rope bridge crossings. Oh and if you knock an enemy then revive them yourself, you take them prisoner...

There's actually a lot more to it than that but I'm guessing you only want the quick rundown.

So, I guess making al the participants some kind of minority would be going too far? Or perhaps not far enough, depending on who you ask.

There's no aversion to the level of detail provided by anyone here, my own briefness was merely a personal failing of confidence and other inner annoyances.

Have a bit of every type of human, someone for everyone. Like a dark and disquieting Overwatch perhaps. Or...zootopia? Am not sure on useful comparisons to use here.

I'd use the opportunity to settle the ultimate question: Who would win in a fight between...? So there can be a bunch of maps but the main gimmick is that each player takes the role of a protagonist from geekdom, and it's a Battle Royale to see who emerges victorious. So each player gets one character such as Luke Skywalker, Wolverine, Legolas, Spiderman, Nathan Drake, Sam Fisher, Ezio, Commander Shepard, Adam Jensen, JC Denton, Jon Snow and so on. They get their signature bows, guns, claws, light sabres, swords, pets, etc. A popular character from each franchise.

This way we get Battle Royale AND can have one on one fights too.

The goal was controversy, so I was thinking 'minorities only'. Now that you've mentioned it though, yeah, being all-inclusive would probably work just as well.

So, basically the Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny?

Was the goal controversy? I can't speak for Smithnikov, but was originally thinking more to disturb. Controversy is child's play with greatly diminishing returns and a very short shelf-life. ;)
Also, the greater variation of people able to project themselves into or close enough to any particular choice of character, the greater the chance for them to empathise with their needless suffering and eventual brutal death!

Car combat game. Everyone starts with a dune buggy and must drive across a wasteland stopping at certain places for gas, arming their car or even switching rides. Twisted Metal Battle Royale

Reminds me...a new Gorkamorka perhaps? We do need a good 40k pallete cleanser after DoW 3.

I thought using kids would be enough, but sure.

More like "Let's get disturbing here. If it's controversial too, damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead."

A 2D Battle Royal with destructible environments and lots of distinctive characters. You know what, a Broforce Battle Royale might just work.

Battle royale where you're a mutant. So the gameplay revolves around trying to pick up the most optimal mutations for a given round.

Randomized forecast says "Acid rain in 20 minutes", get a hard shell or high regen or acid resistance. Extreme heat wave coming up afterwards? Biological cooling system once your immediate needs are taken care or.

The FingerSniper mutation way too meta right now? Get anti-sniper camo, or jittery body parts to throw off aim, thus incentivizing using other weapons that are not so frequently countered.

Throw in a semi-procedural destructible landmass that slowly crumbles into the sea to limit play space and the GDD practically writes itself.

THAT might maaaaybe get me to play this genre, which I really don't care about right now.

I'd probably make a rogue-like-Battle Royale, because why not.
I mean, are they not already? Single life, find what you can, let it shape your experience for that session, death ends a run irrevocably. Can pick up and play one game for the day, or 8 games as it suits, since each is self contained?
Most lack the multiplayer element and the "arena" getting reduced as the game progresses though (well, FTL has the later).
