Basically, two animals - a Husky pup and cat - have been found dead in Calgary this month, with tape over their muzzles, deliberately dehydrating/starving the animal.
The local vet clinic has put up a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Now, the good part - the internet has quickly gotten a hold of it, and added over fifteen thousand to that bounty:
http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/calgary-animal-abuse-fund

This is disgusting, of course, but this is an interesting story. Somebody with an apparently diseased mental state is deliberately causing these animals - housepets, no less - to suffer and die, and this is the first I've seen of such an incredible reward leading to arrest funded entirely by public donation, especially grown so quickly.
I'm wondering if it will result in much of a reaction in Calgary and nearby areas.

In before don't be too quick to assume a mental disease.

ive heard of a few stories like these of people who are cruel to animals. There was a road rage incident years back when a guy purposely ran a poor girl off the road because she cut him off or something. They got into a heated argument on the side of the road and eventually he grabbed her dog from the backseat and threw him into the highway (where cars are going 65 mph or ~120 kph). I think he got 3 years in prison.

pfft, even my neighbor is doing something similar to what this man is doing. He has a bird feeder (without something to catch fallen bird food, which is illegal in this town as it attracts rats) and has placed a trap to catch any animal that is eating the food (rabbits and squirrels mostly) and leaving them there to die in the cage from exposure. My housemate and my other neighbors are getting a wee bit pissed. Not only for the animal cruelty part, but its driving the dogs nuts

I hope they find the person that did this and throw the book at them and force the person to pay the people who owned the pets. Someone hurting/killing animals like this just makes my blood boil.

Strange timing, my hometown just had a similar news article a few days ago. A thief stole someone's dog, kept it for a number of days, then poisoned it and left the body on the owner's front doorstep. Disturbing stuff.

It's sickening that someone would get their jollies out of something like this. If they catch the perpetrator, I hope they prosecute him/her to the full extent of the law.

Does anyone else think crowdfunded bounties are actually a pretty cool idea?

Yeah lets grabs the pitchforks and torches! Burn down his house and quater him/her! Regardless if he has a mental illness or not! /sarcasm.

OT: This is only going yo end badly. Either and innocent person will get blamed or someone is going to go Batman on their ass and someone will die. I am calling it now.

Yeah, until crazies who think they got the culprit without actually having any proof start taking the law into their own hands, or until we see actual "dead or alive" bounties appearing.

That said, disgusting animal cruelty once again. I agree with Ryotknife, you often see seemingly "normal" people going into crazed bouts of anger and irrational behaviour.

Good hunting.

That person belongs in a pyjamas in a locked mental ward. I think it'd be prudent to be particularly suspicious to people that are cruel to animals this way. If not for care and sympathy to the animals, then to avoid them perhaps taking their sickness to a higher level and move on to people.

I remember a similar case happening where I live last year. Some failure who would spend his time by luring cats close and gutting them. He was later exposed on an internet forum, and the following investigation proved it was him.

He recieved a few months of juvenile care, I believe. The punishment came in the form of threats that flooded in once he had been caught. Between those and the psyciatric care he recieved, I hope that loser have learnt more constructive ways to deal with things. I've got a feeling something rather terrifying was nipped in the bud with his capture.

I hope the police find him/her before too many animals suffer, it would be funny if it was a member of P.E.T.A doing it.

We had a case a few years back of somebody beheading the owls at a local sancturay, that turned out to be Pigeon fnaciers killing endangered species to protect their flying vermin.

I'm talking about bounties "for information leading to the arrest of", not "dead or alive".

If I had the time and resources I would travel up there and hunt the creep myself. Someone killing house pets in horrible ways, mental illness or not should not be walking free on the streets.

Dog the bounty hunter. I forget if he's from a TV show or an actual bounty hunter of some sort.

People need to realize that, while some people who do this sort of thing are honestly mentally ill and need help, some others are just human scum (who very well might get bored of doing this to animals and move on to other human beings) and need to be treated with all the "care" and "compassion" they show their targets- i.e. zero.

Both. He's an actual real-life bounty hunter who starred in a reality-TV show.

No 2 which ways about it, this autistic and everyone like him deserve the worst mistreatments and torture. Remember the tosspot that put 2 kittens in a bag and vacuumed out all the air? Fed a live kitten to a large snake? Taped a cat to a mop and drowned it? Those eventually led to 1 lunatic 1 ice pick. The higher the bounty, the more attention. The more attention, the greater chance of getting caught. What I'd do to bastards like these is the primary reason I can't be allowed anywhere near them.
Mate, I get you're angry about this pet-killing douchbag but labelling him or her autistic is absolutely uncalled for, there's no reason to believe the culprit is autistic and there's quite a few people on the autistic spectrum on this forum who might be offended by the comparison. Sadist or sociopath are probably the words you're looking for.

OT: Not sure a bounty is the best way to go about this case, as it's likely to be work of one individual with no witnesses. Maybe funding a private investigator would be the way to go if people really want to see the culprit caught, seems like sleuthing is the best way to go here.

Yes, especially when the bounty posted by the crowdfunded bleeding hearts far exceeds the punishment for the crime.

Alaska:
http://old-www.legis.state.ak.us/cgi-bin/folioisa.dll/stattx01/query=*/doc/{@3919
Alaska Statute 11.61.140
Cruelty to animals is defined as "Knowingly inflict[ing] severe physical pain or suffering; or with criminal negligence fails to care for an animal and causes its death or severe pain or prolonged suffering".

It is a Class A Misdemeanor, with sentencing provisions including a fine of up to $5,000, imprisonment up to 1 year, community service and restitution. Exceptions are made for farming, hunting, research, training and veterinary care.
Kill a couple of animals with a high cute factor, but low legal value, such as the aforementioned puppy and cat, turn yourself in and collect the $20,000 bounty (or get an accomplice to turn you in and collect the bounty). Pay the fine with the bounty and enjoy the rest of the money.

I expect with a sackful of kittens, especially grumpy looking ones, you could probably get quite a substantial crowdfunded bounty, many times more than the maximum fine for incorrectly disposing of an unwanted litter, so crowdfunded bounties for killing cute animals could be quite a good money earner for those willing to kill animals for cash and anger the internet.

Also, lets face it, the type of person predisposed to killing sackfuls of kittens for cash isn't really going to be concerned with facing the wrath of the internet. What's the worst the internet could do to someone who holds such little regard for life and would be willing to serve a bit of jail time for money?

I hope someone catches this person and subjects them to the same torment. I would. Or at least that person should be put down like a rabid animal would be put down.

Quite frankly if the sad sack of crap who did this has a mental illness then too bad.

Third-ed. What the hell?

And yeah, I really have a problem with automatically labelling everyone who does something fucked up as "mentally ill." I'm seriously mentally ill but I am not violent, and the same goes for the vast majority of mentally ill people. Similarly, you do not have to be mentally ill to do absolutely monstrous things. I get that it's nicer to label horrible people as "different" or sick, but it's just not always the case.

I couldn't help myself but I swear you'd posted "crowdfunded bunnies" not bounties and all I could think of was a bunch of evil rabbits in suits collecting money in some sort of ponzi scheme involving carrots.

On the subject matter of your actual post: The idea while sounding cool would have a negative outcome most likely both from people who are attempting to game a system to make money and the herd mentality can lead to other disastrous consequences.
