That's terrible. Have you explained to him how bad fur is?
I tried, but he just looked at me as if I was speaking an alien language and then walked away. Some people just wont get the message.

"No one really believes that Mario actually kills and skins a raccoon dog for his fur in Super Mario 3D Land,"

...Yes, and considering the fact you went after fucking COOKING MAMA, we find this REALLY difficult to beleive, Peta.

In all seriousness, are these guys on drugs? I'm not meaning that as a generic putdown. Are these guys literally on fucking hallucinogenics?

What's with everyones sense of human fail? It was funny and pretty clearly meant to be funny and achieved it's purpose?

I think everyone's acting a little sullen because they took something seriously that wasn't meant to be taken seriously and feels a little cheated about it. But all your doing is reinforcing your own negative impression of PETA by re-interpreting something to fit your own world view and blaming them for not being how you think of them.

In other words, we're acting like FOX viewers

PETA - 1, gamers - nil. PETA are absolutely brilliant.

Further proof that PETA became a self parody years ago: they try to be funny and NOBODY CAN TELL THEY'RE JOKING.
Exactly. Think about that comment for a moment.

Hmm, PETA realised they bit off more than they can chew this time?

I guess the lesson is beware outraged Mario fans!

I only hope that Nintendo follow this up with a light-hearted and tongue-in-cheek lawsuit. Now THAT would make me laugh.

I've sent them multiple emails over the years about the dangers of mixed messages, but they didn't listen. I'm pretty much over it. They're trolls. They know it, and they will never stop.

If anybody but PETA had made a game where you follow Mario as a raccoon trying to get your fur back this site would have talked about it as if it was a clever thing and all of the people posting here about how bad PETA is would have laughed their asses off.

I don't support PETA, but I have to side with them more than most of the people I've seen talking about it on this one. It was clever. It was clearly a joke. Anybody who takes this seriously forgets, first of all, that its parodying an 80's video game, and second that PETA's entire organizational history is full of comedic campaigns.
Nicely put, this is exactly the kind of shit I do in Critical Miss and no one bats and eyelid. On the other hand, PETA does have a history of being outraged over silly shit in video games. Not in a funny way, either.
No, see, the thing I take offense at is that they drop all this moral soapboxing on you WITH the game. If they had just linked to a few simple pages with the information and didn't directly command the viewer to do certain things, rather than trying to cram the entire sanctimonious message haphazardly in the game (at points at which the timer is still running, in between levels with shock videos that break the flow of themes, or as "rewards" for accomplishments) it would gel better. The combination of black humor with heavy handed preaching just kills it. If they would just get off their damn high horse for a second and think about how they present their message, it would go a long way towards being more respectable.

See, when you made fun of the Vietnam War, you let readers come to their own conclusions, rather than say "Frank is an asshole and the Vietnam War isn't supposed to be joked about" right at the end...

Thumbs up for this, I got a good laugh.

Ahh PETA how you love to torment society with your bizarre ad campaigns that are uncalled for.
Seriously though, just cause I use a Tanooki suit in a video game doesn't mean I'm going to hunt a coon down and skin it... maybe....

WHAT?! PETA is backpeddling after their misguided crusade fails to endear them to the public?!

Well, color me surprised.

Bahahaha oh my god I love this!

OT: Okay, I take issue with one thing that they said:

"[...]games like Call of Duty, where characters shoot and kill animals[...]it sends a dangerous message that this kind of behavior is acceptable."

You do realize that we've been hunting and skinning animals for fur, for as long as we've existed as a species, right?

Also, who are you guys to say what is and fucking isn't acceptable. Now, I agree with their statement about torturing dogs and perhaps the later statement about acceptability was only about that, but judging on the context I suspect he genuinely believes that we not only should not have the right to support the animal fur industry, but that we also do not have that right, and that is something I take great issue with.

Honestly, I can't tell what's the truth in this situation. With how PETA has acted in the past, I really wouldn't put it past them to actually have that kind of mindset. Then again, if it was a joke, hey it worked. Though about that Call of Duty issue they bring up: if a dog is running full speed at me with the intention of ripping out my throat and I have a gun in hand, what do you think I'm going to do?

"QUICK! We did something really really really stupid again, DEPLOY THE EXCUSES!"

This was the only thought that crossed my mind upon reading this.

Edit: Also come on PETA, you went after freaking Mario, the single most beloved video game character in all gaming history, so much so that even people who hate games have fond memories of the plumber. There is stupid, then there is up and asking for people to shove their boots up your asses.

You mean the attack dogs trained specifically to kill enemy soldiers and that will rip your jugular out of your throat if you don't kill them?

Perspective, people. Perspective.
I Think they mean the Monkeys who will rip youre insides out if you don't kill them and explode with toxic nova gas if you do.

When nobody can tell when you're serious and when you're just joking, maybe it means you have a history of saying a lot of stupid f*ed up sh*t and your reputation itself is the joke.
