Oh man, I wish this was a joke, but no it's not. So the troll organization PETA has decided to weigh in on the whole Washington Redskins controversy with a crude drawing

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1808861-peta-wants-washington-redskins-to-change-logo-not-name?utm_source=cnn.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=editorial&hpt=hp_t3

So an animal's rights group is meddling into an debate that has nothing to do with animals, but rather a debate to change a name of a national football team that is deemed racist to native americans.

Oh PETA, why do you even try?

I choked.

The thing that makes it hilarious is that I genuinely can't tell if they're being serious or not.

You know, I hope that PETA has decided that their brand name is so fucked they might attract more attention to their cause just by being as ridiculous as possible.

On the other hand, Poe's Law dictates this may possibly be serious. And to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if they were.

On the one hand I see no reason to change the name as there are many teams with stereotypical racial classes/roles that go the wayside.

On the other hand PETA are proponents for keeping the name the same and if PETA said torture was bad I would have to side with torture being good out of principle.

Is there already a team called the "Braves"? Figured that'd be a fairly respectful and thematically constant name to call the team.

What about the New Zealand All Blacks and All Whites Rugby and Football teams? Will those names need to be changed?

I mean, on one hand, fans of the rival teams to the Redskins (Cowboys, Eagles, Giants) have suggested they change the logo to a Redskin Potato as a joke (you know, "Mashing" the Redskins in their big bowl of a stadium).

But its PETA, and they rarely joke. This is the organization that semi-seriously suggested that the Zerg would be considered abused animals if they existed in the real world.

It is a little clever. I'd expect this if for some reason the team ever moves to idaho to be its new logo. If it wasnt presented by peta it'd probably be a little funnier.

No, there's no reason to change to get rid of a racist caricature due to there not being one. Funny how that works.

Not even remotely close, thanks for the #hotsportstake though

As for PETA, well it's not surprising to me. This is what they do. Use stupid gimmicks

Well they want to get attention - wading into national debates regardless of their relevance to that debate is one way to get attention. I'm surprised they haven't tried to say something about the Debt-ceiling crisis - like, "If we all ate potatoes, we wouldn't have a budget deficit" or something to that effect.

Not in the NFL, but there seems to be an unusual aversion to naming a professional team after another one from a different league, and the MLB has already taken the Braves. Though this is sort of a joke, it is odd how you have Detroit Tigers (MLB) and Cincinnati Bengals (NFL) rather than both being Tigers, or the Chicago Bears (NFL) and Memphis Grizzlies (NBA) rather than both being named the same. Even seemingly common names, such as Lions, can't seem to be repeated among the different leagues. There is the Florida Panthers (NHL) and Carolina Panthers (NFL), so it isn't entirely unheard of, but it does seem to be more rare than you'd expect.

OT: I wouldn't mind seeing that as the Redskins logo. Then again, I have an unusual hatred for the Redskins regardless of not being particularly fond of any of their rivals (I'm OK with the Giants and Eagles, but I loathe the Cowboys).

I feel bad because I've made the same joke. About how they should only be called the "Redskins" if they are named after the potato. Dammit, PETA.
Maybe with how they're playing lately, they should change their name to the Washington Generals. Points to the folks who get that one.

The sad and somewhat frightening thing is that they seem to genuinely take themselves seriously.

OT: Not as provocative and unbelievably stupid as their usual stunts tend to be, I even chuckled a little bit.

That said, PETA still ranks as one of my top 5 most hated organizations.

Whoa, that's pretty impressive. They're beating out a huge number of terrorist organisations, secret-police forces, and despotic parties for that spot!

Well, remember that list of the US's most hated companies, and how a games developer got first or something?

Since they support terrorists financially or even with legal resources I don't think it's necessarily accurate to distinguish between them and "terrorist organisations". The fact that they're mostly considered legitimate by people who support them without delving under the surface of what they do just makes the ire they face more earned.

Someone bombs a makeup factory, they shouldn't be given an attorney by an organisation that is donated by people who wouldn't donate towards illegal practices like that.
