While this is fantastic news, I'm frustrated by the fact they want to film it in 3D. I want better picture quality, not some cheap gimmick.

Sure, why not. I liked the lord of the rings, so I suppose there is no reason he shouldn't direct the hobbit as well.

Well if it means Del toro gets back to another hellboy or another new project then It'll be sweet; I'm much more interested in his stuff. I did quite like the Lord of the rings films though, and I though the hobbit was a way better book, so hopefully it translates well.

sweet deal. Peter Jackson's lotr series was near perfect. i dont say perfect because it's not point for point and instead decided to remove a few extra scenes to keep the movie around 3 hours and not 4

I'd kind of be happy if they did a 3D rendition of the LotR trilogy and shown it in theaters.

Anywho, I enjoyed the Hobbit, and think it could make a decent film. Problem is the ending is kind of... Yeah. But I was hoping he would end up directing it if it ever did make it to film.

This is the best news I've heard about the film industry in a while. I adored the LOTR Trilogy and I adore Peter Jackson, he has such a fantastic vision of Middle Earth and with him directing The Hobbit, its pretty much confirmed that they are going to be amazing movies

Good news, Ian MacKellen has been confirmed to return as Gandalf. Only he could return to the role really. Although Christopher Lee wont be returning as Saruman, as he says he's too old to fly to New Zealand now. Sad news.
hmm that shouldn't be much of a problem for the adaptation of the book The Hobbit, since hes not in it

I thought he said something along the lines of "I never want to work with this material ever again." when he finished up with return of the king.

Well, at least he makes sense to direct them. I still wish Del Toro would stay on but at least the chose someone who could do it justice. Not really sure why it has to be two movies but I guess he has to keep the millions rolling in somehow. My only plea is that they don't make the trilogy in 3D. I know everyone is jumping in the eyestrain bandwagon but could they at least wait for more market adoption before they make everything jump out of the screen, seriously, I'm still broke and I can't go rushing out for a 3D tv like they want me to.

There were planning a second film following the councils actions to remove the Necromancer from Dol Guldur, which would have Saruman in it.

He's a better choice than Del Toro. Hellboy 2 was just horrible: "CAAAAAAN'T SMIIIIIIIILE WITHOOOUT YOOOOOOOOOOOU". Gimmie a break. I hope he has it spread across more than one movie to get more of the book since it's not as massive a story as The Lord of the Rings.

and damn he's lost a lot of weight.

First, Peter Jackson directing another movie in the LotR universe? Yes please.

Second, 3D is a crutch, people! WE DON'T NEED NO STINKING 3D!

There's two movies coming out, and its most likely that the White Council will be featured as in The Hobbit Gandalf goes to council with them, and they go to Mirkwood and fight Sauron out of Dol Guldur. So Saruman was a heavy presence in the book, but he just wasn't present in it.

Sounds great. The hobbit was a great book and I'm on the second lord of the rings book. Looking forward to seeing the movies.

Why does the Hobbit need to be two movies? The last adaptation was 77 minutes long. While that was a bit rushed-feeling, I doubt if it will be worth making two movies out of it.

Great news! I loved The Lord of the Rings trilogy and i'm sure this one will be just as enjoyable to watch.
