Indeed, though I can't help but think the overlap between "concerned about game sales" and "teenagers or younger playing M-rated titles" is pretty big. I don't have any numbers on that, as it's just a guess, but still.
That doesn't seem too huge an assumption. I've spent enough time in multiplayer to feel that there are way too many parents out there letting manshoots raise their children.
I forget what they said on the topic, but didn't they actually work with Microsoft to brainstorm ideas or something after that episode? Doesn't seem to have worked, but Microsoft seems to have no fucks to give. I always love getting repeatedly paired off with people I set to "avoid."
I didn't see the followup. I personally like their suggestions about automatically muting people who are muted at a certain rate, and working to implement moderation, and strategies for guiding the flow of communication. Like, obviously you shouldn't be able to send rape threats straight to another user on xBox live just because they're on the system.
I saw on Rap Critic's Facebook people arguing over the fact that the kid should have used "common sense." It's really sad that a 12 year old black kid needs to employ more common sense than a grown-ass white person. But evil still, they pulled up right next to the kid and opened fire--a far cry from the claim that he reached for his gun after repeatedly being told to stop or whatever. It doesn't look like they even gave him a chance to be a threat.
It's just really fucking sad.
No! That's just what they want, fool! Islam is already taking over Europe! By 2020, 21584793468% of Europe will be Muslims!
A tangent, but I really love the work the Santanists are doing over here. Challenging the Ten Commandments statue, putting up a depiction of an Angel being tossed into Hell, etc.
I love that. I saw the statue of Baphomet on here, and it was so damn funny. I want monsters and demons in all of our government buildings. Satanic monks in the place of chaplains
"I'm having trouble with puberty, I'm bleeding"
"That's exactly what Satan wants you to do"
"This kid's picking on me"
"Cut his throat and use his blood to enslave his soul for all time"
"I was told to ask you about the birds and the bees?"
"I'd rather talk about the goats."
Can't be worse than the support system in the schools I went to.
I don't know, the only stances I've seen from her repeatedly are on veganism, feminism, and Israel. She's a rabid zionist who thinks that abusing animals is worse than abusing Palestinians and she takes the same approach to feminism as homophobes take to gays--how am I suppose dto explain THAT to my kids? And considering she's ripped her shirt off and thrust her tits into the camera on TBBT, I think maybe she should start with her own presentation of women if she's going to complain.
Why do people have to disappoint me? I hadn't seen any of this, and now I am sad. I'd seen relatively harmless stuff about vegetarian/vegan cooking, and fairly benign feminism stuff crop up on Facebook once or twice.
It makes me wonder, though, if she's so concerned about explaining these things to her boys, how exactly she explained mommy getting her tatas out on a show that now averages 20 million viewers in prime time.
Mommy got bills to pay kids. Selling out's easy.
Sadly, I've seen that first hand. According to one poster, I have personally made Ubisoft immune to criticism. Even as I was criticising Ubisoft. I am totally for Ubisoft getting away with it, too!
...even though I've been vocally against their practices, don't support pre-orders or broken products, and don't buy any game that requires uPlay.
I haven't gone that far, but my brother's impression of Far Cry 4 is it's incredibly broken. I'm saving money atm, so I'm not picking it up until it's down in price, fixed, and comes with the damn sliced off DLC. I'll be waiting a while.
And then people point at positive things that are largely a byproduct and say "see? It's a good organisation!" Except even the KKK adopts highways. That doesn't make them good people, or their cause good. I've known terrible people who give to charity or donate time. It doesn't make them good people, it just means there's more to them than being terrible people.
Even Hitler had a dog. And then he killed it, because Hitler was a dick.
It's still often fairly hard to get feminism, at least in this country, to care about women of colour. It's not just Jezebel. And that's worth calling out and fighting over.
It's sad, and more than a little pathetic. They had some extra special stuff on how misogynistic gay men are(Not that they can't be. The article was just damn terrible. "Gay Male Privilege". Because we all know that gay people have privilege over straight people, and that gay men definitely aren't exercising regular old male privilege. And of course, when it gets to the comments, it's "mansplaining".). Including the terrible misogyny of not being favoured for service in a gay bar. Who knew that they suffered this hardship? Oh the huge-manateeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
Then of course, there's everything about how they handle race, like employing Hugo Schwyzer, to their strange coverage of a few things around that time, which got them some pretty heavy shit.
My pet issue is batboy in games journalism. #istandwithbatboy
My pet issue is making comics more realistic for cynical audiences, and avoiding anything human. #ISTANDWITHTHEBATMAN. And also chainsmoking cigarettes whilst listening to Death Metal, because Christian Bale needs it for his bat-voice.
I try not to use the "ignore" function, but there are certainly some people where I do, and probably more where I should. On the one hand, I don't like shutting out contrary points of view. On the other, Gamergate has left me disgusted with a lot of people who suddenly seem to have no problem saying and doing all sorts of outrageous crap in the name of "ethics in journalism." I think I've used the word "misrepresenting" here more in the last 3-4 months than I have in the rest of my time on the internet combined. And I've been told I stand for things like rape, child abuse, homophobia, and racism. I probably wouldn't even care except it's coming from the same people who insist that that's what "we" do.
There are some people who I'm never going to agree with, and I'm going to be tempted to respond when I see their brand of comment, and it's just not good for anyone. There's also some people who just aren't worth talking to, because it's so much effort going over the same stuff, and then it goes around again. I ended up with that rigmarole happening in this very thread.
There's also some views that are just plain toxic, but they at least keep you on your toes. Extra points go to the "Drunk Responsibility" thread. That's some classy fun. I think that even if you just ignore some people, you can still find new and alternate points of view, and there's still the vast majority of the site posting.
One of the pictures that always comes up of Milo looks like he's Cosplaying the Eleventh Doctor, from the suit to the boo tie to the hair.
Eh, I'm not sure which one I'd like the least. The eleventh doctor represents everything I hate about Moffat killing something I once loved dearly. I feel bad for poor Matt Smith, just because I feel disgusted just at the sight of him. And of course, Milo is a terrible human being, but I never liked him or Breitbart.
But yeah, the way GG latched onto Milo and Breitbart kind of demonstrates that this isn't about ethics. Conveniently, bot hparties appear to have a problem with women, though. I'm sure this is totally unrelated.
Don't you understand. They're liberal and left leaning, and that means this is too, and they're definitely not misogynists #TotallyYourShield.
So you hoped that someone who harmed another would experience the same thing?
Eh, yes and no. I more said that it was what I'd wish on him, but it's not like my wishes do shit. It was in a response to the allegation that fucking with a bully of that order is somehow "Petty" or "Immature". Essentially, I was leaning towards anything that they get short of being abused about their appearance until it contributes to an eating disorder is getting off easy. Which it is. Plus, there's a school of thought that teaching people to be less dickish so they don't victimise others is serving society in general, but some people rather ignore things and justify letting it slide.
You monster. The SJC is so going to sanction you.
With this and the mansplaining, I'm not sure how the PC police haven't found me.
Honestly, I'm not sure I'd wish that on anyone, but I'm not going to call you out on it because I'm pretty sure I get where you're coming from. As someone with anxiety disorders and other issues, I sometimes wonder how people would handle such things themselves, since they mock or berate or downplay. I sort of wish they could experience it, but the thing is, I don't want them to.
Eh, I don't really wish that on anyone seriously. In the abstract, I wish people who bullied people like that would experience it, but it's not really a solid or concerted effort. The people who fucked with me I don't wish an illness on. I wish I had 5 minutes alone with them, without any rules. Funny how people get cowardly all of a sudden when puberty turns you into a giant. I was standing behind one of my tormentors in a fast food place the other day with a friend. This guy had gone douchebag bodybuilder, but he took one look at us and then kept his head to the front, because suddenly I'm a foot taller than him, and look like a goddamn crazy, and my buddy's even bigger. Unfortunately, society demands that I hold my temper. Shame it didn't do the same to them.
The person who fucked me up the most is coping with their own mental illness, and it was their unresolved issues that made them so dangerous. Tangentially related, the film "The Babadook" is awesome.
On a similar note, I often wonder why black people don't flip more tables in this country. And not just black people, but race keeps coming up, and specifically blacks, of late. And when you have a bunch of white, middle class people insisting that there's no problem, I wonder how they'd react if they or their loved ones were treated this way.
Probably because they can't hold their hands up while flipping tables. I think that's the big issue though. White people trust the police. They can't comprehend the attitude towards the police that black people have. Unfortunately, their trust is abused, and the role of the police as heroes and the idea of the police officer (Particularly his representation in media) ends up being pressed onto the police, regardless of whether they deserve it. Being a cop is a damn difficult job, and there's a whole bunch of people with that job who just can't do it. It's like a fucking engineer who refuses to do ODEs, or carry a calculator.
The Boondocks have a few episodes about that, specifically Season 2 Episode 3: Thank You for Not Snitching. Some more goodness.
At least the LCR actually aren't just a subset of the Republicans, and they're willing to disagree with them, and make their voice heard to influence the course of their party. At least from where I sit, they're kind of like what the Libertarian fringe has been trying to position themselves as, more consistent in the application of their beliefs.
Though it still baffles me when they do things like fight same sex marriage.
I wasn't aware of that one. My knowledge is pretty abbreviated on them, mostly wikipedia level stuff. I was under the impression the opposed homophobic legislation and policy, and opposed certain candidates based on this. Of course, they're still with the Republican party, so that's kind of extremely limiting. I just can't see modern American Republicanism as being that important, but then again, I think their fiscal policy and their social policy fucking sucks, but that's cause I'm a damn lefty socialist punk type.
Unless you really need to know what resolutions are available in a game, I'm not sure why he'd do it for anyone. He's also been very big on corporate apologetics when the issues don't directly conflict with his own profits or hobbies. I mean, I've watched quite a bit of what he has to say. I tend to watch people I disagree with, to the point I think YouTube thinks I'm a Gamergater, a fundamentalist Christian, and probably some other stuff. My recs list on YouTube includes two TAA videos (three, if you include a Drunken Peasants vid), multiple Thunderf00t videos (all dealing with Anita), one more anti-Anita video, and three videos that claim to prove God in some way. It also has a couple things I might actually enjoy, but jeeeeeeeze I am flooded with people angry about things I support. RTU's been showing up there, too, but I was a subscriber until recently.
You have a much stronger stomach than I. I think I finished one of TF00T's Anita videos. "Woman, you are a liar without shame" he says on Hitman, a game he never played, whilst missing the point of the episode that's in the fucking title "Women as Background Decoration". I can't watch TAA anymore, just him coming up makes me sick, it's just too much stupid, and certainty, and wallowing in his own smugness at the celebrity he's attained. And the worst is to think that I could have ended up anything like that.
I honestly think TB went where the money was. I think Thunderf00t did, too. Granted, I think one of those guys is significantly less of a dick than the other, but still.
Agreed. Although at least Tf00t already had his feminism hate boner because of his FTB thing.
One trait of a cult is the rejection of outsiders and the alienation of people who still cling to the ways of outsiders. And I've noticed not only is basically "everyone who's not with us" considered against GG, but also when you go to sites with friends lists, you'll see the vocal GG folks tend not to have many/any people on their lists outside of other vocal GG folks.
This trend appears to be a one-way street.
Eh, I've been noticing the August/September 2014 join dates a lot, and it's no suprise they make friends there. It's just the language is so damn cultish and isolated. Anti-GG, AGGRos "GTP" and all sorts of shit. When they stagger out into the other threads, they make no damn sense. Then again, similar accusations could be levelled at me, most of my friends list are pretty anti, barring WittyNameHere. I mean, most of them were there before, and they're there because they're people I find interesting and likeable, which is a biased sample, but it could happen.
The isolationism and drawing of lines is definitely disturbing. Apparently I'm part of some Anti-GG, which is so aggravating to drive people Anti-Anti-GG, and my "side" is as bad as the other, because some people have opposed GG by doxxing, harrassing and being dickheads. Of course, the moment I start calling myself a member of whatever group it is they're trying to build, they may have a point.
Crap, you're right. It was Harris. yers has been fairly anti-Muslim, though, so I think that's why I conflated them.
Meyers is just toxic. I'm not interested in seeing this sort of shit http://davegodfrey.dreamwidth.org/29860.html?thread=28836&format=light . Because of course, Meyers doesn't believe anything which is wrong, and because it really matters a whole lot if someone chooses to continue leaving space for a belief in god in their life. I am grateful for one thing though, and the stupid generated this response. http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=923 Which I shall forever regard as priceless, until I get my copy of the Witch Watch signed personally, because that book is awesome.
I can't say that his regular posting is much better. Angry snippets minus any degree of real insight. Like a lot of FTB actually, it feels like that site is an aggregator for abbreviated, crappy posts, and a lot of just shitposts and announcements. I can't get anything out of that thing, even when I don't hate the writer.
I really enjoy TBS. I'm actually subscribed to him. About half of my subscriptions come from Steve Shives' recommendations, who himself deserves more attention. OF course, he recently released a video mocking Gamergate, so I'm pretty sure the attention he gets will be negative.
Steve Shives is also a great guy. His lists are hilarious. TBS needs to post more, I was just getting into him when he went dark. His WLC saga was epic, and he's very rigorous.
I gave him a try back when he was also Distressed Watcher on TGWTG. I'd had enough well before he told someone to drown in a pool of rape semen, though.
I heard about that after the fact. He doesn't exactly keep people posted on the shitty stuff, unless he's excusing it because he's a shit, or because he's a pervert. Never saw him on TGWTG, but I never really did that, watched Critic and Chick on YT, followed Dan Olsen to chezapocalypse, because Foldy is amazing. I love that guy, he's awesome.
Probably for the best I missed it. Or at least don't recognise it.
Something about how "Naked Celebrities new social statement" (Abusing the hell out of quotes, I should probably square bracket everything within). It ended badly.
So is this Aussie blackface?
You say that, but "Hey Hey it's Saturday" already came back, and ran blackface gags. Ah Australia. Of course, we have our own black people, except we don't much like talking about the Aboriginal Australians, because we kind of screwed them massively, and people might think we were less easygoing if they realised how terribly racist we are.
