Hi guys!
I need some help getting a couple of hundred signatures for a petition supporting the North Korean Refugee Adoption Act. I've got some info about it I'll share and then I'll stick a discussion question at the bottom so hopefully we can keep this going. My friends have brought up some interesting points about this bill and I'm curious to see what my favorite online community (the Escapist) has to think on the situation.
Basically, once escaped North Koreans jump out of the pot and into the frying pan. In almost every country they escape to they are not granted citizenship status or refugee status, putting them at the bottom of society. (In fact, North Korean refugees were only recently allowed into the United States. There are around 100 of them officially here. To put that in perspective, there are an estimated 20,000 North Korean Refugee orphans alone). This leds to living conditions that are not much better then North Korea. Most women are sold into sex trafficking, most men are deported back to Korea and most of the children are forced to fend for themselves.
This bill aims to correct that by allowing American families to adopt these stateless children. It would also set up pilot programs with South Korea and international adoption agencies to place them in Non-American homes.
So what are your thoughts on the situation. Is it took risky? Should Americans be allowed to adopt children outside the United States when there are children in the US that are starving as well? Those of you that say yes, what is your defense?
Also if you are interested, the petition is at http://thinkchildren.org/sign-the-petition/. I'm giving out big old internet cookies to anyone that signs it, especially in the states of Missouri and Oklahoma.
