Heights. I hate heights. But oddly it is only human heights I detest, being on mountains and stuff doesn't bother me. But tall buildings? Forget it.

Clowns. I really am scared of those things.

Seriously there's no option you have to get like 100 banana's one day and stuff them in their deck or something. I wish one of my teacher's was like that, I guess killing one was funny enough but hey.

okay so i read the microwave thread and got to thinking i got some pretty bad phobias myself
here i will list a few
hydraphobia: fear of water i can hardy take a shower without cowering in fear yet for some reason i love the rain but any other water scares me

hemaphobia: fear of blood and i regularly have blood tests (medications blood test can tell results etc.) and i was know at school as the only one in my cowardly class of not cowering in fear of needles EVER but in the blood test place i pass out from the blood

i have a few more dumb ones... but im not afraid of most natural things like... darkness (when i was a kid i wasnt scared i take natural walks at night) i dont fear like anything you could think of that scares most people... i feel so um... different and odd one out kinda thing sooo any help on conquering these fears would be nice...
:3 this is why people need to take more than an intro-to-psych equilivelence of knowledge.

Sweetie I'm going to compare you to the movie As good as it gets, with Jack Nickolson.

edit: basically in the movie (it's a comedy) it's just seen as a minor annoyance when in reality it's not at all. Hollywood doesn't really do a good job (surprise) at the portrayal of mental illness in any form, save about a half-dozen movies.

*snip, phobias / help*
To both of you. If you had a phobia, it is, by definition an intense irrational fear of something. I dunno if ya'll had seen the movie but Jack Nickolson plays a guy who's OCD - obsessive-compulsive disorder. He is seen doing things in 5's (unlocking/locking the door, not stepping on any cracks on the sidewalk, etc) OCD is characterized by phobias. You don't have a phobia. If you did you wouldn't be able to even be in the same room as water, etc. It isn't that specific as to shower water vs rain water. It is an IRRATIONAL FEAR, it doesn't work like that, at all.

But to anyone who has phobias, try systematic desensitization. If you'd like to know of it specifically, ask.

Anything that flies and has a stinger on its rear. I will take the longer way to avoid them. How should I desensitize myself to them? Let them sting me? Well one of two things would happen. Either my fear would be gone completely, or reinforced and I never go outside without a beekeeper suit on.

ventriloquist dummies. Old fashioned, ruby lipped, monocle wearing, ventriloquist dummies.

I'm not afraid of dolls, I'm not afraid of clowns, but for some reason their bastard child freeks me out to no end. That thing is sitting on a shelf one minute, and then racing across the floor to attack you the next. And it will laugh, oh will it laugh!

It will take over your life until you become the dummy. Laugh all you want. You won't when HE'S drinking the glass of water while YOU sing.

EDIT: Now that i've shared my completely irrational fear with you, hopefully you feel better!

Everyone's got fears, just don't let them cripple you!
Do you remember Slappy the dummy? From Goosebumps?
That episode scared the ever-loving shit out of the 5 year old me, and on top of that, my brother had a Goosebumps bed cover with that fucking doll's head on it AND a little model of it too.

DUMMIES ARE SCARY.

I do recall. To me that's the quintessential "dummy voice". How can someone sleep with that thing so close to their bed?

However, i'm not afraid of Mr. Scarface from the Batman comics. Maybe 'cause he doesn't look like a old tyme dummy. But he's still fascinating.

I have a severe case of arachnophobia and a phobia against insects in general, which i've gotten alot of crap for, seeing as im a 190cm tall dude weighting in at 125kg, so to put it short, im a big dude, yet i cant stand insects/spiders/butterflies.

I'll give an example of how severe it actually is, a couple of years back, i had forgotten to close my window one day, and when i came back out to my room after watching tv for a while, there were 2 butterflies flying around near my roof lamp, making noises and stuff, i gathered my courage and brought out a book to try and hit one of them out the window, i hit it, it made a really loud noise, then it started to fly around like crazy flapping its wings really fast, i panicked, i had problems breathing and i slammed the door and ran away, once i had settled down in a "safe" place i started to cry.

I dont know why i panic when i see insects and such, i have no idea why i have this phobia, but i freaking hate it.

Me and a few friends used to each pick one at random from the list and then do that for an entire day.

OCD major depressive disorder ADHD "the whole bunch"? Forgive me if I find that rather hard to believe...but whatever, my personal judgement/perception aside

Here's the best thing that's worked for phobias, I mentioned it earlier, called systematic desensitization. IT's a cognitive-behavioral technique designed to reduce (desensitize) one to the aforementioned thing. It has only a few steps but that's fine.

1) Make a list of your phobia(s) (seperate for each one if that's the case) and list everything you can think of regarding that that makes you scared. If one has a phobia involving the dentist one could write: the waiting room, the chair, driving past the dentist's office, etc. Then you'd rate them (1 - 10, 1 - 5) whatever scale you want. I prefer 1 - 5 since it's more cut 'n dry, 1 being the least and 5 being intense. Now you select one of the lesser aspects of it (one rated "lower" Than the other one as part of the overall phobia) and think of it, and hold it in your mind, and couple it with a feeling of calm, neutral, etc. Don't think you have to do it for a long time at first. Different people go at different "speeds" if you will. So then afterward, think of it and rate it again. Don't try to do a lot of things at once, just one at a time. Then the next day/time you do it, you'd rate it again, and after a few times (depending), it goes down, before the cognitive process is done. So when you get through all of them, the advanced part is moving to real things. Say someone is afraid of a bunny, after all that, they'd move on to a picture of a real bunny, then a toy bunny, then a real bunny, all within a safe, structured environment.
