Zero-K is "the" 3D RTS you want to go if you got fed up with comercial RTS-Games.

Balancing Issues? ZK has a active Development team, which listens (way to much) to every demand for change in the IRC-channel. Boost that tank! They do!
Servers turned off, 3 months after release? Not with Zero-K. Its open Source, which means there is no company behind it that can run out of money.
No Deadgrades! Remember those funny balance-belly-up-grades that occur if they wants to sell you the nextBigThing 2? Not here. Not with ZK.
Zero-K has absolute astonishing graphics! (Which make it look like warez or a fraud. Nobody in its right mind would give THIS away for free.)
Its really about Strategy! Its no longer about who hast the best mouse reflexes!
So if you were just good at Starcraft.. well, we cant all be Generals!

Play in team Matches with up to 12 people per side (with every side up to 1000 Units), or try the Coop and defend with your friends a Fortress against the Alien AI.
Over 3000 (in words: threethousand) maps, deformable terrain, a socketable Interface, Assistance AIs, a Zoom that goes straight into the Stratosphere (would go higher but the Moon), accurate Physics, Robots, Tanks, Planes and massive Shipyards that release stuff - that will wet your pants.
Aim for a higher goal? Conquering one planet is not good enough? Then join the Zero-K Planetwars.
Here, every victory on the ground conquers a planet on the galaxy Map, leading to Multiplayer Matches that leave more behind then some nuked Down Forrest and glowing Wreckage.
Get it while its glowing red hot!

Wait.. this is now a review? It was just a general declaration of love. If such viewpoints are now considered criticism, having a discussion with a random stranger now equals to shagging your girlfriend.
Its nothing wrong with loveletters, but unlike leavelaters and late-leaves, smoking those dont get you high.

tl,dr; Give it a flyby try. I doesnt hand you the "inserted BlueRay-into-blackBox" Archievement for a thumbs-up (which always was a Finger from every Gamedeveloper there is) but if you handle it with care, it will become the Love of your life.

Oh, wow. You guys mention all of this, but provide no link to the game itself?

It's at http://zero-k.info
It's also lots of fun!
...But kind of weird
...But the best games are that way :)

oh.. now in hindsight. But.. game was up. So why check for typos and comfort?

I mean.. its like that everywhere in life. The easy answers, the comfy options, they get you into troubles, and people who want to get into trouble can do that by clicking on BIG LINKS WITH EVEN BIGGER PICTURES.
We assume that you can use google, and that your parents teached you to not take sweeties from random strangers who have colourfull pictures on there van.
Hardware Recomendations:
A brain with a certain Age is mandatory.

Also.. 80 people to play with... so its not Ghosttown Server "Citizens" 0-1-0-0-1-0..

And Game is up...

There's balance issues like you said and then 10 vs 10 will lag / have frame rate issues as opposed to balanced annihilation. Also there is a bit of a learning curve but watching games is fun too.
