Metal is a great genre. However, screamo lyrics can die in a fire anyway. It doesn't make a song sound more awesome/aggressive/menacing/whatever. Incomprehensible screaming just sounds like a troll throwing a tantrum. Actual lyrics are much more appreciated, as far as I'm concerned. However, this pig squealing stuff sounds even more ludicrous than usual.
They write "actual lyrics" some of the best lyrics i've ever read/heard (yes after a while you can hear them, you develop an ear for it) Screaming is such a raw and aggressive sound And I really dig it in music, as for pig squeals, Thats just sweet if the right band does it.

If used sparingly, it doesn't hurt. For example, the climax of the song might have some screaming in it and it would sound awesome. But if it's used throughout the whole song it loses its intensity and becomes obnoxious.

its a matter of opinion, I used to feel the same, but It all just grew on me, for me the climax of a song, is that final Breakdown.

NOTE* the bands i listen to its simply too heavy to sing over, screaming becomes a necessity. Not everyone has the ear for it, but I definitely do.

All this death metal was cool to me like 4 years ago back in high school. I admit it was cool then but now I can't listen to it anymore. I grew out of all that. I can't understand what is said in songs like that. It sounds like a bunch of noise. :S
And , judging by your name, you have grown out of Death Metal and into one of the best bands ever, congratulations.

I don't particularly like death metal, headbanging is fun for a few minutes but then I go immediately back to something that won't rob me of my hearing before I am of age to vote.
Why thank you friend. Soundgarden is my favorite band of all time. Hell, they created the grunge era of music. And Chris Cornell is one of the best vocalists... ever.

Ugh, can there be a rule that in the future, lead singers have to actually be able to SING to be in a band?
Maybe one day...

*Edit: Soundgarden didn't create the grunge era but they were one of the key bands in its creation.

Ever consider that if your not into the genre you probably won't like the sound of it.
Pretentious people trying to say what music is and isn't are stupid. I don't like Amon Amarth really, so if you think thats bad you probably don't want to look up Carnifex
Look, I don't have a problem with metal; I like some of it and I hate some of it. Not all of the bands I like have the greatest singers. Either way, there comes a point where it starts sounding ridiculous. When you're singing sounds like and is compared to pig squealing, there's something off there. It just sounds kinda silly. I'm not saying metal isn't music, I'm saying that pig squealing isn't singing.

your right singing is singing
Screaming is Screaming
but they are both forms of vocals whether you like them or not, and Pig squeals are not whole songs (unless you like Waking the Cadaver). They sound good at key moments of songs. but too each their own.

The only metal I like is the kind where it doesn't sound like the lead singer is constipated and angry at the world for it.

Death Metal seems like the wrong genre to expect anything less than an abundance of stupidity and sexual frustration from.
you sir are a fool. There are plenty of death metal bands that more intelligent that anything you could listen to. Check out Death, Cynic, and Athiest. They may have death vocals, but they sing about cool stuff, and not just killing people.

And yes, pig squeals suck my wang

I'm laughing at how many people on this post aren't even addressing the issue and are just commenting how bad death metal is. To the original poster, I somewhat agree with you. However, it's more of an opinion. When bands use pig squeals the ENTIRE song, then it gets stupid. But some bands, like Salt The Wound, use pig squeals in the right spot which, to me, make the song that more badass. In the end though, it really is just a matter of opinion.

I've been known to enjoy Mike Patton's pig squeals while collaborating with John Zorn.
If the project/theme/music is appropriate, I can enjoy just about any style of vocalization.
I feel sorry for those in this thread that insist a vocalist must sing in order to be musical, laughable opinion.
Apparently some of you know very little about music, so, in the future; refrain from being pretentious and just say "It isn't my thing" humility will save you a lot of embarrassment in life.

I once saw a video of Mastodon live. It was that very thing about the death grunts that put me off them.

I'll be listening to a song and get really into it then the vocalist breaks out the pig squeals and I get turned off straight away.

Seriously, what is this crap? You don't sound more brutal, you just sound retarded. Cut it out and go back to death grunts.
Pig squeals? Like, actually imitating a pig?
That's it exactly. Want an example, go to 51 seconds in.

This isnt how the vocals actually go for this song, Brent Hinds had a Throat Infection during this concert but he tried to play anyway to not dissapoint fans and that is what came out of his vocals.
