Nintendo?s Ocarina of Time is possibly the most prominent video game to have ever been created. Personally, I was mesmerized the first moment I divulged into Hyrule. If you haven?t noticed yet, it?s a bit of a ?Zelda week? on Pimpin Reviews. You can find my musings on the game itself in my new series called Gentlemen [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.183580-Gentlemen-I-present-The-Legend-of-Zelda-Ocarina-of-Time#5496033]. My admiration of the game is exactly why the independent film ?The Hero of Time? failed to impress me with its film adaptation of the game. Ocarina of Time to myself and to many is not just another videogame. Feel free to call me out on this, regardless of the strain of creating an independent no budget film, if your going to make a adaptation of such a game, make sure you do it with some goddamn dignity.

Gah! Church! They'll make me stand in one place for what seems like hours!
One thing I can appreciate from big budget blockbuster films is regardless of quality, they almost always know how to use a camera. Most of ?The Hero of Time? is played out by the two leads bold facedly telling the audience of the sequence of events on screen. And the excess use of the fade in/fade out feature was a pain as well. One time, the camera faded out at the end of a fight, only to fade back in literally seconds later. My biggest pet peeve, was that throughout the film there was a barrage of completely unnecessary scenes. I can understand that the film itself is just a giant fan service, but dedicating entire scenes for the sole purpose of a handful of ?niche appeal? sequences felt tiresome.
In fact, a whole lot of the film seemed like filler. Characters take ages to speak, the obnoxious camera focuses on the environment too much, and there was this weird thing with taping characters as they tediously walked from place to place like the director had some sort of bizarre Elvin foot fetish.
Like all things in life, the finest parts of movie making are free. The films greatest problem is that the character development is absolutely abyssal. The protagonist Link, for one is possibly the weakest character in the entire plot. The movie tries to paint him in torment through a handful of bad dreams and questions about his past, but it simply isn?t enough. Rivaling Links massive mediocrity is the main antagonist Ganondorf. The man is almost cartoonishly evil, only a step away from tying Link up in a overly extravagant death trap while he bond-villans his diabolical plans to him. In fact, most of Ganondorf?s screens are ?deep? inner monologues that come off as more laughable than emphatic.

Anyone else think Link looks like Hubilub?
The music is absolutely terrific, and if its one aspect of the game that the film actually nailed. The effort they put into the props, costumes, and settings really shows. Even though Link looked like a cross between Michal Jackson and McJaggar. For an independent team without the financial abilities to support such a project, it was stellar on that aspect.
However, what I think they failed to realize is that movies and videogames are not interchangeable mediums. While Link may be a loveable youngin in games, the character doesn?t translate over to the big screen. A fat mustachioed Italian plumber that can only grunt may be cute on the small screen, but in the theater we have a totally different scenario. When it comes down to translating films to movies there are only to viable ways: A literal down to the finest detail film copy or a brand new cinematic experience that only uses the source material as a start.
As it became evident, the first option rarely ever works. The second one is what the industry should be shooting for. The Hero of Time tries to squeeze itself somewhere inbetween. Major changes to the story, like the heretical removal of Link?s fairy companion Navi, to the slight altering of the ending were completely unwelcome. However the ?niche appeal? scenes could have been done away with as well.
Regardless, I would call this movie a must see for all levels of Zelda fans. Something like this will most likely never be done again, and it?s an experience they should not miss. However, I doubt non-friends would find any appeal in the film by itself. Sadly, after a long run Nintendo had to step in to protect its creative rights and shut it down. You can still find it in the deepest darkest corners of the internet.
