Take a look at this debate on James Cameron's "Avatar" and see where the debate derails!

I'm really sick of people going on about how Avatar's story is unoriginal. The story wasn't the point, and half the people complaining about the unoriginal plot play games like Halo, so who are they to judge?

/end rant

I complain when people refuse to recognize the plot's unoriginality. It's one thing to make it unimportant, its another to say that it's original.

I've seen that before. Classic example of a person failing to understand the question, but blabbering on anyway. I used to get them all the time back when I was on the debate team. It's part of the reason why I don't do it anymore.

It derails when the one idiot who kept saying "it's valuable because it's worth a lot" (wow, thanks for the revelation, retard) started talking about how "Avatar" is a good movie because there are only so many themes available, which somehow excuses the sub-par story-telling and complete lack of character development in the movie and automatically makes "Avatar" a classic. Then, Cyndaquil completely gave up providing any sort of intelligent rebuttle to the idiot and instead started focusing on a relatively irrelevant plot point - which, it should be pointed out, the idiot never provided a sufficient answer to.

All in all, the debate was one step above a YouTube comment debate.

Which is all well and good, but everybody keeps squawking about how unoriginal the plot is like they're the first ones to notice it, you know?

I can't believe I read the whole thing! The person defending Avatar certainly did get pretty ridiculous in her defense, and while I agree with you about the movie, I like to remind people of this quote from Kurt Vonnegut: "Any reviewer who expresses rage and loathing for a novel [or movie/TV show/etc] is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae."

Also, because this "Haley" chick deleted her posts, it makes your debate somewhat one-sided.

Just sayin'.

Yeah, wish she didn't, but most of her posts were along the lines of "Shut the fuck up Brian, you're retarded."

Up in the Air used no special effects at all, and it was by far the best movie I've seen since...well, Up. The Pixar film :p
People get raging hard-ons for special effects when amazing movies that comment so spectacularly on the human condition go fairly unnoticed, and that's very, very sad to see.

Avatar is a movie who's purpose is to entertain. I saw it and it entertained me. Yes,it was Poocha..Pocha..Pokahontas(!) with blue smurfs.
BUT! Did Pokahontas have giant robots and Sigourney Weaver? No.

Fair enough. The point there is more of whether it was GOOD or not. I felt not. A movie can be bad and entertaining. Like The Simpsons Movie. It wqas kinda terrible, but it entertained.

Oh god...I had just forgotten that movie...I guess Avatar appealed more to me with its CGI effects. Yes,I liked the CGI. Beacause I have art for aesthetic choice in school.

Good read. I'm always searching for some much needed lulz, of which this provided me plenty of.
