Piracy

I recently read on the discussion for the new M$ anti-pirate attempt that piracy was only for "poor people". Well, poor people and as someone else said "cheapskates". Now to put it simply, I just do not think this is true. While I wouldn't exactly call myself poor, or a cheapskate for that matter, but I am a frugal person. Keep in mind that I am not frugal by choice, rather just not able to make the money I need to support my gaming habit.

This brings me to my real point, I have considered piracy. I know know, it's shameful, but like I said I only considered it. I have thought about it all, simply downloading games for my PC, or modding my xbox back when I had one, to making my ps3 a computer. But in the end I decided that it was better for everyone involved for me to simply not. The risk of ruining my console, taking money, and legal trouble just made me decide against it. It wasn't much of a fear retreat, as I know that thousands, probably millions, of people do it without consequences.

But I have thought of it due to (in my opinion) the outrageous price of video games. Consider this my friends, you buy Red Dead Redemption (US $60), and then you buy the liars and cheats pack (US $10), well then you want the liars and cheats pack (US $10), and finally you want the Undead Nightmare pack (US $10). That's US $90 spent on one game. That is more than some people spend on housing in a month. People like me simply do not have that kind of money, and while I understand that some people can, I still think it is just too much. And I'm not here to argue that games need to be cheaper, that's not my place. What I am here to say is that I see where some pirates are coming from. And while I do not condone what they do, I simply understand it.

However I think there are better ways. For instance, I rent the games that I can't afford to sink money into, and while that is basically every game, and I don't get to spend all the time I would like to with them I get to experience them. And lets face it when is the last time you played a game that you couldn't finish in about a week? I mean obviously there are RPGs and such, but aside from that I can't remember the last game I couldn't finish on the hardest difficulty within the time alloted to me. Granted this tends to not allow me the time I would like to have with multiplayer, or collecting special items, and that stuff. I still get to play, and I always have fun! Unless the game is bad of course, and then I can't even imagine how upset I would be about dropping the money into it.

Now I know I kinda just went off a rant, but I want to know how you guys feel about all of this. Any opinions, thoughts, or critiques?

My question exactly? If such a place exists in this city, I would move without hesitation.

OT: Personally I'd rather see the money go to the industry. If the Dev's don't get their money, they won't be so eager to try and push the medium forward.

I'll continue buying my games the old fashioned way.

Fractional Games, the independant developer of Amnesia: the Dark Descent, were concerned at the wide availability of pirate copies of Amnesia. That's a game that costs $20, from a small indie developer aiming to sell 20 or 30,000 copies of their game to stay in business.

Piracy has absolutely nothing to do with the cost of games. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar.

I buy games legit (with what little money i have) because it goes towards those who put the work into it (with the exception of GameStop but that a different issue entirely).

Mud huts are apparently very cheap...

OT: Where the hell can I live realistically for £90 a month?

Find a studio apartment for about $150, and get on housing assistance. It's not hard most people just don't try.

That is a sad thing to hear about, but I never said that pirates pirate games just because they are so expensive. Just that the price is something that I think decreasing could stop a large number of pirates. I saw a breakdown of where your money goes when I buy a game, I'll try to find it for you all.

It's a matter of convenience. Why scrounge up $60 or so and go through the hassle of tracking down a certain game and wait for it to go on sale when one could simply torrent it overnight while they're sleeping and play it in the morning? It's not even limited to games. Movies, music, anime/manga, xxx-rated stuff... there's so many other factors and stigmas attached to it that discreetly acquiring it for free in a matter of hours seems much more attractive than popping into a store for them. The small stuff or things you don't plan on becoming to invested in or have no way of being exposed to or acquiring without going through illegal means are especially noteworthy for this.

Granted, I'm not advocating this... when it comes down to it, it's all indulgence and thinking of one's own personal benefit. The ease at which it can be done today makes it all the more easier to ignore the effort and quality service provided by those involved in making it in the first place.

I am not attacking you personally, I can not stress that enough, but unless you speak for all the pirates out there try to say you think or something to that extent. After all we are expressing opinions here, not things we know for fact.

Also please keep in mind that I am only speaking for the piracy of video games.

Good choice in not doing piracy.
Piracy increases costs of games because fewer people buy them, which results in more piracy.
It's a vicious cycle.

...you're either looking at very extreme studio apartments (15x15 closet, nothing it in, no carpet, light fixtures or windows)

Or you have -never- looked for an apartment before. ...Ever.

OT: The majority of pirates don't care about the price of a game, some pirate the game, and then buy it later, or toss it. Which then leads to pirating the game to see what it's like...finishing it, and having no reason to buy it. The ups are you didn't pay for it, you enjoyed the game, and hell get all the benefits of owning the game. But the downs are the fact that it's illegal, people look down on you, no multiplayer (they have their ways aroudn that too...though many ways are complicated, annoying, and hard to set up)

Some pirates do it because they just hate DRM in general. Some do it as a demo to the game. Some do it for convenience. They generally don't look at the price as far as I know. Since...they pirate, the price doesn't matter at all..

Luckily i'm a hardass, I can afford my games by living without things like...hot water, or heat. ..or a phone... >.> It's fun to see what I can go without.

...but I'm fucked up. Leave me alone.

I always wondered why some countries don't have any laws regarding software piracy, let alone enforce them. I could go to the mall tomorrow, mod my 360 for 50 dollars, and buy New Vegas for 10 dollars. In front of a cop, no less. If I were to do that, nothing would happen to me. No arrest, no fine, nothing. It's ridiculous. Hell, clerks at kiosks will tell you, "Those are all the originals we have, but we have lots of copies."

$90 US for one game? Why, that's almost as much as we pay in Australia.
Ninja'd!

OT: Yeah you really can't complain. Our games ship for $110AUD new usually. It's particularly BS now that our dollar is actually worth more than yours!

Either that is true, or you don't realize that housing situations are different all over the world. If you get on housing assistance around here it is not that difficult to put a roof over your head. Granted amenities are not included in that.

Piracy is grate. DO IT NOW!
And if you like the games you pirate buy them a little later (not second hand) when they have dropped in price (preferably pick up a GOTY or something like that). That way you support the developers which you wouldn't do if you bought it second hand and you get to play the game while it's still current, and you will never buy and support a bad game ever again!

Oh hello b& hammer didn't see you there!
Did search, came up with nothing like this.

This post was anti-pirate, so, go you and all that.

Why does your post read as so pirate friendly?

Oh, and I assume that was you getting at m being banned for this. Well look at the rules... This is a legitimate discussion, and while it is discussing the illegal act of piracy, it is not condoning it. Seriously, why troll?
