This is weird, and I bet it really is. But me and my friend were talking about pirates and he loopholed THEN one uped me that, what if, the pirate ALREADY owned one version on the game on the console, then pirated the PC version, me not being a lawyer on the subject, I subsided the conversation and went off for home. So Escapists, you all seem to know a lot more on the licensing and what not of games, so, is it ILLEGAL to pirate one version of a game after already owning a previous version, note, by this, I don't mean moving it around to friends and everywhere, but only for youself?

I'd say that, since it is a different version it is more wrong than if you copied / acquired an exact duplicate of what you already owned (For example, some disc drives don't play too nicely with certain DRM, making the game unplayable).

Sharing the files or downloading them in the first place is definitely illegal, but at least in the case of already owning a working copy there was no potential sale lost.

Not to be rude (Ok, well, maybe to be rude) but this thread has been done several times before.

Yes, legally, it still is piracy. But if your willing to download the game like that, I highly doubt you care.

It's illegal. It's illegal even if you owned the PC copy. (In the States, anyways.)

I more or less was asking a question, I had to know the answer so my friend could be catious. Anyway, was it done RECENTLY, is the question?

I remember seing this kind of thread no less than three times in the past 2 weeks.

When you buy a console game, you get the liscense to that disk. You may transfer it to whoever you choose (First Sale Doctrine, FTW) and they may use that copy.

I own Street Fighter IV on my 360. I still intend to pay for it when I get it on PC. I bought Oblivion and Mass Effect for both PC and 360. If you want the game, pay for it. Always.

yes its piracy. it makes sense if you think about it. i mean, the whole reoccurring theme behind piracy is loss of "potential revenue" and that's what they are losing if you download a game for free even if you paid for it on another system.
