I'm sure someone challenged this because they said it'd be against human rights to free speech or something, it's on the BBC somewhere. Also, they'll probably go after the big fish first, like people who regularly have like, 20GB of illegal files every day. My word is enjoy this freedom whilst you can. It's always been inevitable that the golden age of internet piracy-for-lulz would end.

Funny if they put up an INTERNET POLL to see if you're unhappy about being disconnected.

Good luck to them on this to be honest. Sure they'll be able to see how much people are downloading and using whatever protocols but I highly doubt they'll be able to see what you're downloading. They can ban people from the internet who use torrents but then again, there are many legitimate channels that use torrents for perfectly legal file distribution, some of them without the use of a torrent program in the first place. Then we have FTP, not anywhere near as common as Torrents or P2P filesharing but still used by some. The problem in tracking/banning this is that it is how you upload stuff to a website such as um... A WEB PAGE? Then we have stuff like Rapidshare etc, yeah you can block the websites but then new ones will be created.

The industry needs to radically change it's ideas on prevention and focus on cooperating as there will always be another way to share files. If they start banning people from the internet then they'll only drive it more underground to some dark depth of the internet they can't police. I find it odd that anyone in government see's Lord Mandelson as having any credibility anymore after his little holiday however and if this "law" passes then it's going to be a sad day for the legal system in the UK.

You know the PM only earns 70k a year, right? That's the leader of our country (Whether we like it or not.). It's really not that much when you consider the size of the company (Well, country.) he has to lead. Besides that, most of our current governments ire is well deserved, in my opinion.

When I first read this title, I thought someone had had a face transplant.

Make of that what you will.

Pirates face disconnection made you think of the sea first? Um, what?

EDIT: Nevermind. That's a hell of a lot better than a face transplant, even tho' I can see how that came about.

Shall we begin shooting criminals in the street as well?

Illegal or not, there's a reason there's a legal process. Get rid of that, then you pretty much lose any valid argument against pirates.
While the full details would take all day, this is why I'm a pirate.

UK Pirates to be exact.

"Lord Mandelson has reportedly prodded through a proposal to disconnect alleged file sharers, without judicial process, and without waiting for OFCOM to see if such a measure is even needed."

Sounds scary to me seeing is there is about 6 million file-sharers in the UK and some have to be on the escapist.

What do you think of this?

He's impossible to kill! I half expect when the Conservative are voted in, he'll STILL be in power. I recommend we flame thrower his house and get the coffin whilst he sleeps.
Mandelson does not sleep. He waits.

Oh please sure the wages themselves are semi-reasonable (still alittle high imo) but how much does an average man spend on gas/electricity, food, luxuries which are being taken as expenses on our money not to mention the rediculous retirment funds they gave out. And your average working/middle class guy earns what 15-30 grand a year tops 70 grand is alittle to damned high.

I have a relative. He is the CEO of just a national corporation based in the Uk. He earns 150k a year before bonuses. (Which number in the hundreds of thousands.) 70k isn't much among high-flyers, and politicians are among them due to the power some of them wield.

but how much does an average man spend on gas/electricity, food, luxuries which are being taken as expenses on our money
Are they really? I thought expenses were only meant to cover costs incurred on the job, and in renting local accommodation. It's standard practice for any large corporation whose members are expected to travel hundreds of miles to work. I think people are just squewed about it because of the expenses scandal.

And your average working/middle class guy earns what 15-30 grand a year tops 70 grand is alittle to damned high.
So?What would you propose they should earn? Bear in mind that, currently, their salary is directly tied to the success of their country.

This has some intresting points

First why is a person who was not sacked once but twice over his dodgy dealings suddenly come up with this proposal after having a meeting with an individual who has been quiet out spoken about file sharing??

Second how exactly will they enforce this.

- Those that do file share already know how to mask what it is they are downloading and even then those that don't know what they are doing would require that their file downloads be monitored.
- Most ISPs have said that they are unwilling to foot the cost that would be entailed from having to install the hardware needed to monitor users connections. They have also expressed concerns at being forced to act as an unofficial police force. After all that's like asking a vehicle manufacturer to monitor people who drive their cars to make sure they aren't speeding.
- The only two major ISP to have shown even a snifter of interest BT and Virgin (remember the whole threatening letters thing?) Do not offer a service that has a large enough benefit to justify having them police what you are doing whilst connected through them, they will simply lose customers to other ISPs.
- Those companies that do opt for it will in cur extra cost as a result, who will pay for that. They sure as hell won't so that will mean higher costs for their customers. Higher costs to have your connection snooped? Again ISPs that do that will lose customers to those that won't
- Finally this flies directly in opposition to the UK governments proposal to have every house connected to broadband by 2012.
- It also has to be a serious breach of human rights, they can't tap your phones or snoop your emails but they can monitor your internet usage?
- France tried this thing and it was thrown out by their highest courts; can't remember how they described it, but they thought it was a very bad idea.

First impression of the thread: "SWEET, A PIRATE'S FACE FELL OFF!"
Realization of actual meaning: "Awww..." and also "Hah, that's for not pronouncing 'Aluminum' correctly, douchebags!" "Poor UK :[ "

You just know there will be a HUGE backlash against this. I don't file share much personally. Just the odd image here and there. I probably wouldn't feel it too much, but still he has no right do this, and I cannot see him getting away with it unscathed, if he succeeds at all.

Funny how much closer we appear to be sinking towards a police state...

They have tried sorting file sharing for so long, and nothing has worked. No matter what, people will find a way to file share. And most of the time when they have said they will do something in the past it has been mere word-of-mouth, no action.

I fully expect this to be the same.

Yeh...I agree here. Surely, nothing like this could even begin to happen without the uproar causing such a disturbance (in the force, of cource =D) that the government or someone will have to address the issue, and thus ending Lord Mandelson's stupid crusade.

I see no way for him to succeed in carrying out this threat at all.

Yes yes, of course! How else do you deal with such a rampant issue the requires delicacy and strategy when trying to combat it? Why easy my dear Timmy; you grab the biggest boulder you find and just throw it at the problem and forget about it!

Haha haha! The political system at its finest!

Won't stop piracy, will cause many cut-offs for no reason.
Mandelson showing what an idiotic evil fool he is at heart.
I can't change the WEP key on my BT Home Hub (I thought I had done and it didn't work) so any pirate who knows what it is will be able to use it again and again, then I'll get disconnected.
And as this is the British government, there can be no appeal without lengthy court cases and huge legal fees.

There are plenty of other ways to get music and books.
I record audio from youtube, if I really want a song.
And there are some sites that offer free ebooks.
I don't agree with pirating games and software.
