Two words: fucking snore.

I think BioWare got mostly everything right except this, spending hours sinking time into clicking on a planet for upgrades is not my idea of fun.

Haha I was just raging about this...

What the hell were they thinking??

They got everything else perfect in the game, and then this godawful chore pops up... truly awful.

If you buy the advanced scanner upgrade it's not too bad.....

I think gametrailers.com said it best. The minigame is at the same time incredibly tedious and strangely captivating.

The scanning minigame is just more tedious busy work. Essentially it's a substitution for those hours we spent driving around on boring barren worlds in the Mako. Unfortunately, planet scanning is just as dull (though not a furstrating). It's only saving grace is that it does not take as long as driving in the Mako.

Agreed. This is definitely one of Mass Effect 2's lowpoints.

I bought that. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that doesn't that just allow you to move your mouse faster across the planets surface?

That's not an upgrade. That speed boost should have been a part of the vanilla scanner. Did they really design this to be as dull as possible?

I don't find it remotely captivating. I hate it.

The first thing I bought with the materials was the upgrade to make the damn thing go a bit faster...

You don't need that many resources anyway. Also, try pulsing the left trigger, it makes things a lot faster.

The more awesome a game is, the higher the likelihood that there will be an incredibly annoying and stupid part of it somewhere. It's like, there has to be at least one thing that sucks to keep the universe in balance.

Look at Batman: Arkham Asylum. It was a game dangerously close to perfection, so there had to be that lame Killer Croc level or else the universe would collapse into a black hole.

It's a very addictive minigame in my opinion. Also, I don't think you need to spend more than half an hour the entire game to get "minerals" for weapon upgrades and ship upgrades since most materials used to upgrade the ships are quite common during missions and planet scans.

It's not too bad on PC. I did a smart thing and got a gazillion of resources at the very beginning, when I liked the minigame. I didn't have to do it later.

As bad as it is... it beats driving the fucking Mako almost to the top of a shitty mountain and falling off backwards.

The Mako was designed by the devil in that way. How much, percentage wise, do you think you spend on the exploring?

Meh, I prefered it to driving around on lifeless planets in a Mako. Plus, in the long run me doing the scanning thing led to people not dying.

Plus you only really need to do it on the first play through. Second time you play, you're set for life with resources...

All I can say is thank God I get 60,000 of each mineral from starting a 2nd playthrough and importing a L60 Sheperd from ME1. That's enough to get at least half the upgrades you need throughout the game.

Honestly I don't know what BioWare was thinking with this scan system. I just pray it's something they can patch, like adding a 2nd speed upgrade that triples it's scan speed or something. It's mildly addicting I agree, but my god does it get tedious after the first 2-3 planets.

I prefer it over the mako, and really it isn't too bad. I got a crap ton of resources to buy virtually anything i currently need in the game...and I'm not that far through the story I presume. I have it on the PC so the scanning is real quick. If anything is annoying, it's constantly having to buy fuel and probes. The probes aren't too bad, but always buying fuel is annoying and just slows down all the exploration.

You get the upgrades that give you more fuel and probes? They make a difference.

I don't mind the scanning game so much. Of course, I didn't mind the Mako at all. I must be the only person on the world who thought it was pretty easy to drive.

It's a giant blemish on an otherwise near-perfect game. It's painfully tedious and pretty much necessary. I suggest drugs and/or alcohol, then probe until you pass out. Also, make sure you probe the local cluster for the lulz.

I'm yet to get the game, however I do think I'll purchase it today at some point.
I saw a review on Gamespot for it, and it said basically the same thing; the scanning of planets was the only thing they managed to get wrong.

Same logic applies to the meteor shooting bits in Dead Space.
