I first saw this news about 24 hours ago when a friend put up a NASA tweet on Facebook. NASA tweeted this on 14th of December but I haven't seen anything of it here so I'll share :D

So apparently there will be a short 5 minutes on January 4th at around 9:50 AM, timezone PST, which will be around 6 PM, timezone GMT if my math is correct (I took 8 hours from PST to GMT?)

So, will you be jumping around hoping for a 6 meter leap or are you sleeping at the moment and hoping not to wake up floating around above your bed?

First newsplace to write about it was apparently this place, which I've never heard of before :p

They couldn't weight until the 1st of April?

But yeah, this is both obviously fake, and something that somehow keeps getting repeated every so often. Been going on for years, and would be utterly catastrophic if it was to occur.

I haven't followed NASA closely, like ever.
So they're a bunch of trolls?
I mean they could put up something like this even if was just minimal for us. The first thing I thought about was the release of the Titans in the Disney Hercules animated movie :p
That would be cool xD

I'd wager that the people behind that are, yes. Whether or not they are in any way affiliated with NASA, or in what capacity, however, is another matter entirely.

OTOH, though, the orbits of all satellites would be mucked up, they'd all move outwards into higher orbits. If you were driving your car at the time, suddenly you're not being held to the ground anymore and you'd easily get enough lift to get off the road.

Liquids don't need to flow downhill anymore, they can move in more or less whatever direction. Rivers and water supplies are messed up, lots of people would likely accidentally suffocate by inhaling floating water. Without gravity to hold the oceans down, the rotation of the planet would see them wander over onto land. The contents of sewers would end up everywhere. Not to mention flammable or otherwise dangerous liquids currently sitting safely in tanks where they belong.

Buildings are built on the understanding that gravity is going to pull things straight down at a constant force. Play with that and many structures will likely fail.

A zillion other things would go wrong in strange and interesting ways. It'd certainly be something to see, but the world can do without that.

Every year. It happens every year. And every year a few saps fall for it thinking that they're gonna float that day for 5 minutes. Jeez.

Assuming NASA was being sincere (They aren't), I'd be in a secure underground bunker come the 4th, since any event that could suspend gravity, temporary or not, over the surface of the entire planets, would in all likelihood bring civilization to it's knees.

Nope.

http://sciencequestionswithchris.wordpress.com/2013/08/28/when-do-the-planets-in-our-solar-system-all-line-up/

Space is 3 dimensional, planets orbiting along completely different axis from one another, so it's not going to happen.

In related news, on January 4th there will also be random fluctuations in meteorological activity and marital laws; expect to see cats and dogs in bed together, as well as a rain of men.

I do like that the link you posted cites Patrick Moore as a source for this, despite the small fact that The Gamesmaster has been dead for a few years now...

It's a hoax, and a rather poor one at that.

Aside from the fact that the planets almost never perfectly align, there is absolutely no reason an alignment would have any effect on the gravity you or I experience here on Earth. There is simply nothing massive enough to result in a noticeable difference to the gravity we feel in the entire solar system that will ever actually get close enough to affect us. And even if we did encounter something that massive, we're more likely to be thrown off our orbit and burn or freeze to death than ever actually experience a dramatic change in gravity at the surface of the Earth.

I wish this were true, cosmic alignments causing what would appear to be supernatural powers. You could act out any superhero/Jedi battle you wanted.

I'd be careful about that. I'm not taking any superpower that doesn't include "plot armor" as well.

Really... planetary alignment? This is the dumbest thing...

I understand the gravity thing is stupid.
But why is the alignment stupid? I mean 8 big balls (I know they're not balls, but y'knoow) circulating in space, why couldn't they align?

I still want the Titans to appear though :(

As an aside, planetary alignment is sorta kinda a real thing, in that at certain times, the positions and movements of the various planets in their own orbits is such that you can send a space probe to pass by several of them on one mission, instead of using multiple probes, which is more expensive.

Planetary alignments happen all the time. But we've yet to observe any kind of a metaphysical effect they have.
