Played it too late and now no one talks about it :(

As a cheap-ass, it is incredibly rare that I purchase a game first-day. Even when I do purchase a game first-day (see Mass Effect 3), I have a job and other responsibilities so it takes me a long time to actually play through. However, I am now in the situation where I REALLY want to find someone to talk to about a game experience but no one's interested because it's old news :(

My example:
I just played through The Darkness II. Holy amaz-balls, what an excellent game. For those of you who continually ***** about the FPS genre having nothing more than shallow MMS games, be quiet and go play the Darkness and The Darkness II. The voice acting is some of the best I've ever seen in a game and the story gives you the type of gut-punch seen in the more recent examples of "Spec-Ops The Line" and "The Walking Dead". The games are dirt cheap so you have little to lose but some time. Plus, how many other games allow you to Quad-wield weapons!?

So anyway, cheap-ass gamers unite (or maybe just ignorant gamers who let things slip through the cracks for a long time)! What games are you just recently playing that you want to just GUSH about but it's so old that the conversation has moved far past you...

I've recently been playing through Destroy All Humans! again, although only partially since my Xbox (first one, not a 360) is over a decade old, and the game is partially scratched. But I can tell you when that game first came out, and even somewhat now, that game is freaking amazing.

Hi there! I'm here to talk about The Darkness 2 with you. I don't like the FPS genre that much, but those games are my exception. I love those games so much, I love the amount of detail in them, I love the story, I love how it made me care about the characters. The second one I loved, but it was just a bit too short for me. It lacked some of the things that made the first one so great. But it was still a fantastic game regardless and a lot of fun.

One game I'd like to gush about is The Last Story on the Wii. I know it's not that old really but I never see anyone talking about it! I loved it, I was a little put off by the voice acting at first, it didn't sound that good at first but I got really into it. However there were a few places where the voice acting did not suit the situation that was going on, which did ruin the scene a little in some places. To me it was a really great game. I loved the story, I ended up loving the characters. The combat system did feel a little bit out of the players control at times, but I understand that you can change the combat to manual which solves that problem. I loved the design of the game, I loved how big the main city was and how much fun it was to just explore it. One thing I didn't like was the inventory system, where the pictures next to the items weren't very clear so it wasn't very clear to know just who had what. I could go on and on, but it's starting to sound more like a review. I do want to write a review on it and post it on the user reviews forum but I'm scared ._.

Another old game I'd like to gush about is Viva Pinata. That game. So bright and colourful and just so much fun and wonderful to play. Even if it does get hard. Damn game. I want more piñatas but to do that I have to kill off some D: That game is not for kids. Once an adult piñata died and then it's children ate the remains! Then an evil piñata came into my garden and the only way to get it out was to beat it to death with a shovel as it was making my other piñatas sick. But it's such a great game.

And another is Endless Ocean on the wii. It's a relaxing game, I just sit back and go swimming and find out little facts about the different types of fish. Whenever I feel stressed I just sit down and play on that and everything feels a lot better.

I'm exactly like that with BlazBlue at the moment. No idea when CS:EX came out on the 360 but it must have been long enough ago that nobody talks much about it unless I bring it up myself, even then not many people. It's not as bad as Skullgirls since that game is literally dead online, zero people on 24/7 and I can always find a few different people on BB at any time.

I think i've figured out why I get attracted to certain characters now. It's always the ones who look like they are having a blast when fighting. I LOVE playing Dante in UMVC3 and now Makoto in BlazBlue. Makoto has the best stage in the entire game as well. The music is overpowered.

STILL waiting to land even one of Makoto's supers online though. You have to be hugging the guy to hit the uppercut I swear. Oh and I find the circle-forward movement to be tricky so those supers are never gonna happen unless I really mash it. With the possible exception of Noel's FENIR. It's like Noel is custom-made to be able to randomly FENIR the moment she has 50% Heat...

I love blocking in BB for some reason. Maybe because I can actually block low when I want to now, thanks Marvel. I was blocking this Hazama online for a good 10ish seconds alternating between high and low because his overheads are too flashy :3

If only I knew how to counterattack against an extended block string...

Yah! I was worried that maybe I just loved Darkness II but it's actually garbage but it is nice to see someone does agree! I absolutely love how The Darkness started fucking with you; bending you to it's will with tricks and illusions... seriously people, give the game a chance!

In fact, this thread is probably going to end up being a great "I need something to do and only have $5 to entertain myself with" thread.

The Last Story I think though isn't talked about because it's late on the Wii's life cycle. Many gamers (myself included) had already abandoned the Wii by the time it came out. Kind of a shame because I've heard it's pretty damn good so I might look into getting a Wii again...

I played Psychonauts really late. You'll still hear it recommended as a classic, but most people had already moved on from uncovering symbolism and the idea of talking about what they'd want in a sequel...

You. I like you. You say stuff that I won't normally say about myself.

I'm a cheap-ass gamer too, and I often wonder which is worse: The type of person that will hack their machine and play nothing but "backups" or someone like me who will wait over six months to get a game for 80% off list price.

I had to listen/read comments about the cake and how much of a lie it was for well over a year until I got Portal for free somehow. I think it was on Steam. Hell, I still haven't played Bulletstorm, and I recently got that for like $15 (PS3). I also just got Binary Domain, even though I have yet to finish Dishonored (got that for peanuts as well).

Next on my list are Far Cry 3 and Spec Ops: The Line. I'm sure the PS4/720 will be out by the time I pick them up.

The Darkness II was a great game, the only issue I had with it was how short the story was. I could've easily gone for another six hours of content, at least, because it was a lot of fun to play and had a beautiful aesthetic.

As for me, I only just beat Bioshock and Bioshock 2 over the last few months, even though I had owned the first for something like two and a half years, and I've only recently started actually playing the first Dead Space.

Yeah, it's kind of a double edged sword. Games are so frequent and drop in price so quickly that it's almost silly to be willing to pay $60 for a brand new game. Give it six months and you're looking at a $30 game instead. Except for games that almost require new versions (Call of Duty and....uh.....well, that's about it for me), it is incredibly rare that I buy a new game for more than $30.

However, that can't be good for the industry but to put it harshly...that's on them to figure out, not me :)

I'd like to think that it kind of evens out since I buy everything new and buy used only when it's the only option.

People rarely talk about the games I play even if I buy them new, really what people talk about is a few AAA games that have been shoved down your throat via marketing as for the rest well most people are ignorant of their existence or even if they are not they dont play them.

As such I rarely talk about games except in a very general way such as online here or more specifically with a couple of friends but we play very different games as we have different gaming tastes.

Well in the UK it came out quite a while ago so it probably came out ages ago in the US and Japan but really no one talked about that game when it was new and I never saw it for sale in a bricks and mortar shop except one 2nd hand Xbox copy once so I had to order mine online who had to actually get the game in before they could send it to me.

There was more talk about BBCS while EX is basically the same game with the free update included and with all or if not all a lot of the DLC from CS included so if you already had the prievious game with all the DLC and werent bothered by story mode there was no reason to upgrade.

Makoto is awesome and the main reason I picked up BBCSEX asap was because I wanted to use her in story mode and arcade. Really its a stop gap game until Chrono Phantasma hits (which looks amazing).

Skullgirls I have heard more talk over since the patch on PS3 it has more players while I didnt buy it on 360 but since microsoft keeps rejecting the patch I think they have effectively killed it on that system, also they have their first DLC character in the works, Squiggly who actually looks pretty cool.

Fighting games are rarely talked about though they are pretty niche I remember a few talking about SF4 and of course back in the day SF2 was always talked about and MK as well (although that was for different reasons) but really outside of sites of enthusiasts they wont be talked about much usually they will be written off nonchallantly if brought up at all.

I was going to mention The Darkness II as well, fantastic game.

My only problem with it is the Vendetta mode, if played after the main Campaign, feels lacking compared to all the stuff that Jackie can do.

Pleased that they got the Drunken Scotsman/Violent Glaswegian character spot on though =P

I've been going on a PS2 binge for a while now and of course nobody talks about something as old as ObsCure or as obscure as Cold Fear. I recently replayed Okami to 100% on EVERYTHING (yes, I even baited EVERY kind of fish in the game) and Shadow of the Colossus as well, those games pop up now and then in "are videogames art" and "best videogames evah" threads but nobody really devels much into them. It's understandable, but that thins out chat topics.

My old game that I love that no one talks about (or even really knows existed) is Turok Evolution. That game is just a trip. It's so satisfying to play with the level of over the top gore and awesome weapons.

I want to talk about Link to the Past because I played it recently, but I guess I'm almost 2 decades late in the discussion. 0.o

I loved that about The Darkness, and there is some of that in the second, especially with...

The memories of Jenny. Gods those did make me cry. Also the way in which you wake up in that psychiatric ward. That was creepy!

Yeah, I think you are right about the Wii. There are still some great games on it though, even if they are far and few between. Check out Pandora's Tower. It's not an old game again but still late on the Wii's life cycle, but it's really good fun, it reminds me of Shadow of the Colossus in many ways and the Legend of Zelda in others.

Well that's disappointing :(

...fuck it, I'm gonna do it anyway! Unfortunately, it looks like the internet has also abandoned The Darkness II for not one person joined my public match.

All well, I'll just murder everyone all by my lonesome.

So, were you able to beat it in five minutes?

Probably all the games.
If it hasn't been years, it's been two or three months.
In video game industry time, that's the equivalent of decades apparently if DLC isn't pumped out.
Doesn't help that I sometimes put off playing a game for a while.

Well, I recently (last Xmas) acquired the Mass Effect Trilogy, and have completed it a number of times with differing Shepards.
Needless to say, I'm still gushing over it with my brother, but no one else because I'm late to the party.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
I was lucky enough to keep myself from spoiling anything about it with the thought "Maybe I'll play it someday" and I'm so glad I did.
Amazing game, better than I'd expected it to be.

Uh...pretty much every game, really. Thanks to keeping up with so many different series, my backlog is ever enormous and ever growing. As such, when a new game comes out, chances are I won't play it until at least a year after it was released, at which point everyone who cared has already done with it. For example, I just got Pokemon White the other day. Yes, I know it came out like two years ago. But I've been busy with other games. The same will happen for Pokemon X/Y, I guarantee it.
There's one advantage to this though: At least FAQs will exist when I get around to whichever game. So I can be lazy with it if I feel the need.

EDIT: In fact, a better example would be how I'd been interested in the F.E.A.R. games for years, but never got around to actually playing them. I finally did...like two months ago. Obviously those games have come and gone by now, and nobody cares anymore. I liked those games, too. >:
