Seems like everyone plays supporting roles in TF2. It gets to a point where half the team are snipers and spies. Then they complain no one is pulling their weight when we get rolled by heavies and soldier etc.

For that reason I rarely get to play supporting roles because we need someone to push. I do enjoy supporting roles when I do get to play them.

I'll support when I have to in LoL, but I don't care for it. Watching your carries fall apart in a ranked game of LoL while you can do nothing about it, is depressing. There's only so much you can do as Sona. Putting the team on your back isn't one of them.

Edit: That being said, Medic was my most played class in TF2, but I'm also far better at LoL than I am TF2 in a carry position, so that probably has a lot to do with it. Seeing my mid just feed like a soup kitchen in LoL, knowing I could've done better is painful.

I think we can all agree:

Support classes are completely necessary in all forms of warfare!

...ALL!

----------

I find them interesting to play, and often find I am better at playing support classes is they are well balenced for their purpose, because I am looking out to keep people at their peak, or at least out of a coffin.

I've been playing a lot of DOTA 2 recently, and I've been having a lot more fun supporting my team than trying to carry them.
Ah, a fellow Dota 2 support. Hello there! I captain from the 4th or 5th position with my friends in premades, and always take the 5th when playing solo-queue.

I play support because my warding knowledge is good, my timings and global awareness are both sharp and my knowledge of laning tricks, allied lane-creep manipulation and dual-neutral camp pulling are also pretty complete. Not to mention juke spots and cute terrain tricks.

But most of all, I support because I know I'm not likely to get any of those things in return if I'm carry.

If I'm carrying, I manage to feel responsible and anxious even if I've had no wards, no stacking and no ganks set up for me. Even if Crystal Maiden went bottle first and the inevitable has followed that bad omen, I feel responsible.

Stupid, I know. But there it is.

Relevant quote from LoH:

"Roles are just 5-6% of success, you shouldn't forget about the rest. In modern Dota a lot of truly talented players limit themselves to just two-three heroes and always stay at the same lane. The game turns into elementary tactics with the complete absence of strategy. It's obvious, if a system error occurs - team ends up at a dead end, because they are only used to play on a pre-established pattern. This style of play has come from another discipline - Counter-Strike. Initially, only one team played like this, it was Na`Vi, but afterwards a lot of teams adopted this style of play. Perhaps this style is not so bad, but you should be able to switch in every possible situation as we have done in from time to time. Such a model oversimplifies the game, not allowing good players to realize their full potential and opportunity. People have played differently before, it was much more interesting to watch the game in terms of strategy - everyone was playing according to the situation. Now everything is just much easier and more predictable. That is why the best players are from the "old school", who played a lot in those days, then Dota wasn't put within the framework, they were able to teach themselves to think with their own head and have become versatile players."
Personally I all random all day or fill the missing role in Single Draft/Random Draft or with friends. Though my fundamentals at support are strong.

I'm a lot better at support roles than soldiering around in the games I play, and I usually am the driver, support gunner, or medic on the team. I also occasionally coordinate strategies and the like, when no-one else is up to the task.

Support is great when you're in a stack with teammates who you can communicate with, but in pubs it's a nightmare and it's just safer to carry if you want to win because you can't rely on pub players.

Support is the role that needs communication the most, so playing support with friends is great. (Either people which style of play you know from experience, or with Skype / TS)

I love playing support, but playing in pub games is a pain, since you have no idea what your carry wants to do in most cases.

(I kinda put junglers in as supports aswell.)

I had one hilarious moment playing Nami in a pub game though.

Losing terribly- Enemy team doing baron.

Ran towards baron pit, even flashed towards it and blind Q'ed into the baron pit.

Great success, baron steal! (And seriously, the Q does so little damage and moves so slow.)

Then the rest of my team died one by one and we lost.

My heart was in overdrive for a solid minute though. Love the fish.

I like playing support.

When I play TF2 (very rarely), I tend to go medic.

When I played Planetside 2 for a few weeks, I was a medic.

When I play a round of Tribes, I'm the engineer buzzing around home base keeping the defenses in tip-top shape, dropping turrets and taking potshots at passing flag-cappers.

I just feel most comfortable playing support, usually.

In MMOs, though, I prefer to be a long-range DPS guy. I had an archer in Ragnarok online back in the day...I was basically a human machine gun. That was fun. ^_^

I'm just gonna come right out and say it: I like to feel needed.

For that reason (amongst my natural desire/instinct to nurture and protect my friends), I do find myself drawn towards the more supportive roles. I can't remember the last time I played a character/class that wasn't capable of healing.

I enjoy being responsible for keeping my friends alive, particularly when I'm given the option to help kill stuff, too - I like to know that I can handle myself as well as keep my friends alive. It's all well and good being able to heal, but if I'm out on my own and find myself completely unable to kill whatever's attacking me, that's more than a little disasterous.

I'm kinda fond of the self-rightious Omni-knight, maxing out your healing shock early on makes you absolutely killer early and mid-game, provided you team up with another melee hero.

OP: Support is the role my brain kind of tends towards regardless of what I'm playing. I'm more defensive and worry about what's happening to the rest of the team, so my reflexes fire up when things are going bad and I need to get someone out of the situation, or turn a battle around to our favour. Maybe it's just like.. me being generally neurotic?

If you play support for the sake of support, you are probably bad at it, a dead weight that could be replaced by free wards, ape, cheaper dusts.

I don't play support, I play heroes that happen to also be support. I play... lane support, disabler, occasional roamer and ganker, possible nuker, lategame escape/semi-carry and all around beautiful young lady

KOTL can suck it...*touch her and I'll kill you*

Speaking of Medusas, after you get pullape and buy her a Rapier she's actually pretty good.

My MOBA of choice is smite, which thus far only has support tanks. I like this role, setting up my carry or mage to just wreck face throughout game feels good.

In TF2 I tend to play what I think the team needs, so if we lack pushing potential I'll go medic or heavy. Sometimes I just get the urge to play medic though, I enjoy it quite a bit. I just enjoy rocket jumping more.

I actually prefer playing a support role.
In games like Battlefield anyone can shoot dudes, but when the tanks come rolling in, it's nice when your team mates turn to you, the anti tank guy. :D

In Team Fortress 2 I have no qualms about playing as an Engineer or Medic if it helps the team win. When I used to play Halo, on CTF matches I would always try to focus on getting the flag or helping others bring the flag back, rather than just run around and try to get kills.
