Personally I kind of blame Advent Children for the way Cloud is generally perceived.
Not quite. While Advent Children certainly didn't help matters, the first instance of Cloud's modern personality perception that I'm aware of was actually Kingdom Hearts, funnily enough.
Anyways, I played FFVII for the first time last year, and as someone un-blinded by nostalgia, I think that, while aged, FFVII is most definitely deserving of the praise it gets.
The dialogue is dated as hell, and in desperate need of a re-write, the Materia system kinda makes the characters too interchangable, it looks like absolute ass on anything other than a portable screen, and several of the game's most important plot points and moments have been completely ruined for newcomers by the game's own popularity.
In spite of all this, I thoroughly enjoyed my playthrough of the game. Dialogue aside, the story is top-notch, the characters are interesting and fun, Sephiroth is definitely one of gaming's signature villains for a reason, and while alot of plot points have been completely worn down over time due to internet common knowledge, the game STILL found ways of legitimately surprising me. Hell, if I didn't know it was coming, I would probably have been moved to tears by Aerith's death.
FFVII sits, currently, as my #2 Final Fantasy, just below X, and just above IX (although those three are grouped pretty close together in how much I like them).
