Playing games alone...

So, today I was incredibly bored and decided that to pass the time I would try to tweak my MTG decks. Lacking an opponent, I decided that the best way to work stuff out would be to simply play games against myself, that is making a move for one deck, then going over to the other side and making moves for that one, and so on and so forth, trying to find weaknesses in each deck.

Am I the only person who does that? Does anyone else on the Escapist play with him/herself?

I used to play monopoly by myself as a child. In fact, I used to play a lot of board games by myself as a child.

That's either a testement to my imagination, one of the saddest things ever, or a bit of both.

I tried to play some cards games against myself because no-one would play with me.

Yeah its pretty depressing sometimes.

When I was young, I played some chess against myself. I lost :/

I prefer LEGO, though, it's quite easier to play alone. Or just, you know, video games.

I never played against myself but I would often draw hands to get a idea of what to expect and get a idea of my speed and my odds of dealing with my opponents if they have certain hands. I am actually a great magic player for someone who uses rogue decks but my problem is I have terrible luck. It wasn't uncommon for me to get mana screwed even with a perfectly balanced deck over and over then have the deck turn around and flood me over and over and yes I shuffles extensively. I would never top deck anything EVER. I am the kinda guy who will drop his bomb and his opponent will have the 1 card in his entire deck to manage to deal with it in there hand and never draw another again the whole game.

As a kid, I always played LEGO alone. I ended up playing out epic storylines that spanned generations. I also had the good old Gamecube. Playing SSBM alone is pretty darn sad.

Never really got into the card game stuff myself, I collected Pokemon cards as a kid, but our version of 'playing pokemon' was essentially a card flicking competition, whoever could flick their card the furtherest won. I mean, what else were you supposed to do with all those elemental cards they stuffed the starter decks with? Occasionally I would do that alone, or with my cousin, as a form of practicing for the real deal come Monday morning lunch-time.

How do you play card games alone though? Wouldn't you already know your opponents next move anyway? How does it work, do you pretend that you don't know? or does M:TG work differently to other such card games?

I can play Video games alone though, unless its a strictly multiplayer game and my only option is bots, which bores me to death, although when I first started playing Counter-Strike I would play against the bots on Hard to help boost my speed and aiming somewhat, without having to wait the round out if I died early.

Back during the period of time I used to play and didn't always have a roommate or someone like that around to try ideas with, I did stuff like that too. It can work well for figuring out certain kinds of things, like if you have the right balance in your deck and how two match up against each other, but sometimes it's hard to realistically pretend you have no idea what's going on when trying to test something like a counterspell deck that way. You can sort of get yourself to act like you don't know what "the other person" is holding or would do in response, but it takes some practice and will never be as helpful as getting a friend to help you out. Aside from you not being able to read their mind, they'll also think of things you wouldn't while playing and have a different playstyle in general.

Whenever my wife has a "headache".
Beat me to the masturbation joke :/
And yet you somehow managed to pull one out anyway.

OT: I used to play cards against myself. Much like I would play with action figures by myself. Or play video games... yeah, I was pretty introverted as a child.

Every once in a while I'll play five card draw poker or Blackjack against myself.

I've played chess against myself, but I never tried it with MtG. I'll have to try that; haven't played the game in eight years, but I just rediscovered all my cards in a drawer recently...

Putting aside the obvious joke, no not really. Not magic, and not really with anything that's otherwise suppose to include another player. In short, if I'm alone and there's nothing but tabletop stuff, it's time for a little solitaire or to go somewhere else or to read.
