Ok I've recently hooked my original Xbox back up because there are some games I wanted to play that I haven't in a long time like Jet Set Radio Future and the Kingdom Under Fire series. I also owned the GOTY edition of Morrowind but never did much in it. So I'm going to give it another try soon but I'm wondering if there is anything I should know before I start.

Cliff Racers. They suck, and you're gonna be seeing a lot of them. You hear they're screech, you run.

Be prepared for the anger of combat to begin with.

The only 2 things I ever had major issues with in Morrowind were the travelling time with little in the way of bloody directions "could you go to a town for me my good man .... it's in >>>> that general direction".

The other was the combat until i'd advanced a bit.

Miss, miss, miss, hit, miss, miss, miss, miss, balls, i'm dead ... *run back to cave* miss, miss, hit, miss, miss, miss "why won't you just bloody die to my cheese knife mad woman killing me with a toothpick".

Still play it to this day though so I can't say anything bad about it.

Choose 'The Steed' as your starsign and pick athletics as one of your main skills, no matter what class you are.

In that game, you move like a snail struggling against 100kph winds, and it's agony.

Also, take cure poison and disease potions with you, because if you're like me, and carry around lots of stuff, one unlucky blow from a shitty little rat can and will paralyse you.

Erm... get it for PC? Honestly, the major thing Morrowind has got going for it is mods and community support. I don't think anyone would recommend playing Morrowind vanilla, and that's kind of what you're stuck with on the Xbox version. You can get the PC version for peanuts, it'll run on practically any rig no matter how old, and you can upgrade it in pretty much any way imaginable. I think it's a fair claim that Morrowind has got one of the all-time largest, most dedicated mod communities of any game ever. If you can think of anything, someone's already modded it into the game. Including every kind of graphical upgrade you can think of.

Look at it. This game's nearly ten years old, and it looks better than most fantasy RPGs that are coming out today!
Don't suppose you have any idea where you can download that mod anymore do you? I really want to get it, but it's harder to find than the Loch Ness Monster.

I have a saying for any Bethesda game: They only publish games half-finished. It's up to the fans to complete it.

Costs about $20 through most Digital Distribution, unless you catch it on sale. Variant on online ordering. Questionable, but I gave up on trying to find logic to DD pricing when I saw Freespace 2 on Impulse for $20.

Under no circumstances are you to turn off your game music at any given time.

Prepare for a nightmare in terms of getting to know the game. It's not user friendly to begin with. Persevere - it'll be worth it and you'll get used to it fine, but be ready for that to take it's time.

Don't expect fancy graphics. You're playing this on the Xbox, so you can't really grab some mods to help with that (though to be fair, they really only modify the skyboxes and the water from what I've seen and the two are already good enough on their own, it's the terrain, the NPCs and well, everything that's simply outdated).

In terms of signs and such... the one that gives you a 50 unlock (The Tower I think) is a pretty useful one for a beginner player. It'll get you through plenty of doors and into plenty of chests for a while, though it does get terribly outdated after a while (the better player you are, the faster it becomes worthless, but I remember loving the hell out of it on my first character).

Really, most of all, just be patient with the game. We're talking about the title that got shitty launch reviews and was then pronounced Game of the Year once people actually properly played it. You're playing it years after it came out and unfortunately, for all my love for the game (and it's my favourite game of all time), time hasn't been particularly kind to it. But if you give it the time it deserves, you have a good chance of playing something beyond memorable.

Good luck :)

If you have played oblivion read this. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Morrowind_for_Oblivion_Players

Also read this. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Starting_out

I would say a warrior would be a good build to go for so pick a Breton or Nord with The Lady sign. Have long blade, heavy armour, security and speachcraft as major skills.

My advice is to not talk to this arsehole until you're able to kill Vivec.

You'll only see him if you get the Tribunual expansion, but man I hate this guy...

The biggest ones I can think of are don't jump on fences (can't tell you how many times I got stuck in the blasted things), save often and in different slots, since the game crashes quite often, and just stick with it. It is very difficult to get into (especially in the beginning), but is one of the most rewarding games I have ever played. Also, when you are powerful enough and after you have completed the main quest, kill Vivec to get two Wraithguards.

Well, for one, I'd say stop looking for hints- someone is bound to post an exploit (And, let me tell you, Morrowind is FULL of them) and the game just stops feeling real when you discover that you can become a god minutes in.

I'd suggest just winging it the first time, THEN looking up the hints- unless you like the idea of ultimate power, of course.

Oh, also, don't pick acrobatics or athletics as a skill- the short term benefits don't outweigh the longterm cons of leveling up every other minute because of two rapidly increasing skills. It's not as bad as in Oblivion, but you'll be weaker in the end because of it.

EDIT: Oh, and Morrowind has the sort of melee combat system that takes time getting used to- if you want to really enjoy the first run, I'd suggest pure mage- Breton, starsign apprentice, all magic skills.

This isn't true. Everybody talks about cliff racers as being the game's biggest nightmare. The answer to cliff racers is "Marksman." My Bosmer stealth character had the best playthrough of any of my Morrowind builds, and Marksman was one of the reasons. The combination of Bound Longbow and high level Marksman is nasty. It's a one-shot kill on even blighted cliff racers. AND you don't have to wait for them to descend to swinging level.

Explore everywhere and if you are into completing as many quests as possible do not kill ANY named npcs you don't have to. Also, use the difficulty slider if you're not into getting slaughtered all the time in the beginning. Join the Mages Guild and Fighters Guild and steal the stuff from their chests (They re-spawn monthly). Do Not forget to give the package to Caius right away or you will forget about it and lose it somewhere.
