Hi,

first of all, sorry if this is in the wrong place, but this is the only forum I have seen with much activity, so thought I'd post it here.

Basically, I have a couple of movies on my computer, that I want to watch on my tv, via my xbox 360. First of, is it possible??? The plan is to put the movie on the USB drive, bang that into the front of my 360, and play from that. Is that possible? or am I gonna have to rip the movie onto my xbox?

Cheers in advance for the help.

I think so; I've done something of the sort before. The only issue that may come up is that the 360 might not have the right codecs. It may download a few things on its' own, but for other codecs you're basically screwed.

Well I'm guessing you have windows xp/vista/7 and your xbox is connected to xbox live? Then just install the media center plug in that allows you to play your media over your xbox.
Just google: "Media Center xbox 360 plug in."

Yeah.

As long as it's a supported filetype...

Don't ask me which are supported I don't remember.

But AVI should be fine.

We'll you can't rip it to your Xbox in the first place, but you can watch it from your xbox. I think you have to have a media update but it will work.

Yeah, I've done this a lot. .avi and .wmv work fine, but nothing else does, unfortunately. It's the same with playing any other audio files than .mp3. I plug my iPod in to my XBOX a lot to play music off it and only half the files work.

I do this all the time. AVI is fine with the Optional Media Update.

Cheers for the help, and so damn quick aswell, most of my movies stored in digital format are .avis, so I'm glad it'll work.
Hammy, may I just say, you assume wrong :D. I'm a linux user through and through. And even use a fairly obscure distro :p. SO windows media center is DEFINITELY NEVER an option for me.

Thanks to everyone for the help.

Also, how do I get the optional media upgrade? Or will it prompt me for it when I try and watch the movie?

yeah it works. i've been doing it since the 360 first came out, sometimes it plays it a little funky depending on the settings but overall i have played a good 30 some movies on my 360 from a usb drive.

Ok, just tried. And I have it configured for my xbox. But now there is no way I can get the movie on, I just have an "xbox 360" folder with a few executables in it, and 3mb of space free on a 2gb drive. What the hell???

On a related note, can I install games onto an external hard-drive? I heard you can do something of the sort, but I'm not sure whether that's for a new OS, or the Slim.
I have around 300 spare gigabytes knocking around, and I don't use Live.
