I usually play the originals before the sequels

Also, it is sequels. I tend to be a Spelling/Grammar/Whatnot Nazi, please excuse me. I just find it immensely annoying when people misspell.

I played Metroid Prime 2 Echoes before Prime. it made me appreciate prime more for its beauty and they weren't all that connected so wasn't a big deal in the first place.

Great games, such great games...

I tend to not play sequels before the originals, its the one reason I have yet to play God of War 3 =[

Its completely different if I already know the story from the previous games or if story isn't really important to enjoy the game.

I don't like to, I prefer to know the story, but I don't mind. And theres only one time that I know I have, in which I got KOTOR 2 Before KOTOR still epic

Well, there are a lot of games out there that are technically squeals but you can play them without any knowledge of the others such as, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Ratchet and Clank, Fallout, Doom, Sonic and a huge list of others. Then you have games that you don't have to play them in order, but playing them in order gives you better insight into the game, such as the Mother Series, KOTOR, Silent Hill, or Phoenix Wright. Then you have games that playing them out of order can lead to someone being completely confused like your example of ME 1 and 2 and also .Dot Hack Sign, Half-Life (mostly after HL2) and others that have a direct story line tie in.

So while skipping ahead in the series isn't a huge deal some of the time, it can be for some very specific series. Sometimes I try to play things in order, if the story calls for it.

Yeah, I played KOTOR 2 before the first one.

Could this be why I consider KOTOR 2 a far better game than the predecessor in every way?

Who knows, but the first KOTOR really did seem like a step down to me after having played the second one first.

I would personally say you can't play Digital Devil Saga 2 without playing 1 first. There is a major twist that is all the more wrenching if you played one.

Mass Effect should also be played before ME2, but I do think Bioware did a decent job setting up the background just in case you never played the first one.

These days, thanks to the glory of Wikipedia, it's easy to skip an entry in a series. I skipped Half-Life 1, Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2, Fallout 1 and 2 and Metroid Prime 1 and 2, but I still found a way to enjoy the games I played without feeling lost.
Yeah but then if you take that approach, then what if it says something like,
"...and after the final boss fight, a playable sequence starts and ([small]insert main character's name here[/small])'s head explodes and it turns out it was actually his evil mustache-sporting twin brother and that the real ([small]insert main character's name here[/small]) was hiding in his head after being bannished to the mental dreamscape of the evil ([small]insert main character's name here[/small])'s mind by ([small]insert something really awesome here[/small]), so he then escaped in an explosion of awesome, all while riding a motorcycle through out of the giant dragons forehead that you have been trapped in for the last 20 minutes of the game with ([small]insert name of hot female sidekick here[/small]) sitting beside him in a bikini.... oh, and the dragon EXPLODES... its awesome..."

And after reading that your thinking "AWWW! that would have been awesome! but dammit! now its been ruined for me forever..."
Then what are you going to do? because you know that if you go and play the first one it just won't be the same as experiencing it for the first time because you already know whats going to happen thanks to Wikipedia...

I also picked up a copy of Mass Effect 2 without playing the prequel and it wasn't too bad, I figured out who was who and what they do in a few hours.

Then I played Mass Effect 1 and I was shocked how Bioware managed to mold such a terrible piece of poo into one of the greatest games of the first quarter. I still can't pull myself together and finish the damn thing.

Generally, this is something I avoid. If I think I might get interested in a game series, I like to get as well versed in the "mythology" of the games, so I don't feel like I'm missing out on something. Especially in games with a continuing story.

I try to play the first and if it doesn't impress me I usually don't go to the sequel. Battlefield Bad Company, the first game to me just wasn't impressive, so if I go to the new one, it'll be for...fuck I don't even know!

Bioshock is a game I started, but found to be a game that the first 15 minutes sell, then afterwards feels like shit. It sets up horror but then turns action action action. I might like the new one, so I play on EVENTUALLY finishing BS1 and trying BS2

If the original can't impress, the sequel could, but why should it, since good sequels are more of a good thing, like God of War...

I try and go back to finish the first of a series before I play sequels, but in cases like a Dynasty Warriors game or even any FPS that dosent have active story telling then I don't care
