If you happen to have a PS3 some of the games listed have been remade for it or on the PSN which could help with the price issues of some of the rarer games I'll Add the Sly Cooper series to the must play list and Suikoden 3 if you like JRPGs.

A lot I could have said is taken, so I'll recommend the following:

-If your a fan of strategy games, try out Romance of The Three Kingdoms IX, and the other games in that series from PS1/PS2.

-PS1 games work on the PS2, so you have those as well. Be advised, though, you'll need a PS1 memory card for those:

Metal Gear Solid 1/Integral
Sim City 2000
Spyro The Dragon
, sequels
Crash Bandicot, sequels
Star Wars: Rebel Assault I/II
Star Wars: Dark Force
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy Tactics

To name a few.

Most of the games I know and love are mentioned by somebody here; I don't think I've seen Armoured Core though..... Get any Armoured Core game, they're all great!

Edit: somebody mentioned it apparently...here's some more

Zone of Enders
Metal Gear Solid 3
Final fantasy X and XII (and X-2 I guess)
Resident Evil 4
007 Nightfire
Time Splitters
Ratchet and Clank (either one)
Jack and Daxter/JacK2
Front Mission 4
Starwars Battlefront
Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City and San Andreas
Silent Hill3

Oh no! People are talking about something that has been talked about before!! how tragic!

Maybe the person wanted to get some personal recommendations rather than reading over an old topic thread, I mean he could have just as easily just Googled a list of popular PS2 games but apparently he would rather have somebody tell him "hey, you should try this!".

btw, I'm pretty sure posts like "Oh this thread again" are considered spam : \

Also, the most recent of these was posted over a year ago! I fail to see the issue.

So... there goes the nostalgia burst. I think it's safe to say that if you get handed a list of 15 PS2 games that are "TEH AWESOMEZ" you're not going to play them all. Sure, Silent Hill 2 is an amazing game, but if you don't like survival horror you probably won't be sold. I'm sure the Persona games are great RPG's, but if I'm not in an RPG mood they're unplayable. What kind of games are you into?

Shadow of the Colossus seems to have damn near universal appeal though, so that's a good place to start. Everyone says Okami is like that too. I also noticed that even though I hated every character in Devil May Cry 3, didn't like any of the cutscenes, and couldn't find anything noteworthy about the design - that game still kicked unrepentant ass.

If he wanted a personal recommendation he should of told us his taste in games or what he was looking for. I have no problem with that. If you ask for a generic list of best of games you're going to get the same answers as the thousands of people who asked that before. Not to mention the PS2 is an old console so it's not like there are new releases to check out, it's the same list of games that are said in every thread. Chances are he is just too lazy to google and find out for himself.

Oh hey, it's this thread again. Come to think of it, it's always about the PS2, isn't it? I never see threads like 'Just got an Xbox/Gamecube, recommend me some games!'

Too tired to look through the posts, so I'll just list the games with the least probability of getting mentioned

God Hand
Katamari Damacy/We Love Katamari
Rez
Viewtiful Joe
Killer 7
Yakuza 1/2
Gitaroo Man
Way of the Samurai
You sir are my hero because you put up God Hand and first, was about to say this thread was lacking in epicness. +1 internet for you.

Writing a thread takes quite a bit more effort than a google search, so it's certainly not the lazy alternative. Either way, I'm certain this forum can survive the occasional "Hey! list some games you like from X console" threads. And I'll say it again, "Oh this thread again" is spam.

Seen a few folks recommending Rogue Galaxy. I've had the game years and still haven't managed to finish it - over 800 hours clocked so far.

My own favourites are probably:

Shadowhearts
Shadowhearts - Covenant
Star Ocean - till the end of time

You'd be surprised at how many people don't know how to use google. This forum can survive the swarm of feminist/sexism threads, mass effect 3 ending/games are art topics and that terrible pedophile shitstorm but it doesn't make them any less annoying. Oh and excuse me for saying it like that I didn't know one line made an entire post spam. Next time I'll stick to the escapist tradition of commenting about the searchbar.

The previous threads are the personal opinions of the Escapist, and if you noticed they haven't changed. Also the last thread was a little over a month ago [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.381745-Looking-for-PS2-recs]. I just post a list of the bigger threads so you can look through them for interesting games.

Yeah well the thing is I didn't know that there had been previous threads on this topic. I don't live on the escapist and I don't jot down every thread that is created. Also I don't really appreciate being called lazy. Even now that I've been told that there were previous threads just like this I don't regret my decision to do this because it adds more of a Human element to the whole thing and I can actually respond to people without getting shit for necroing a thread because really it seems like no matter what I do I piss someone off and to be frank it kind of grinds my gears that I can't even ask for advice without someone getting on my back for it. I really don't see what the big deal is, are you saying that once we have a conversation once we can never have it again? If that's the case we're going to run out of topics pretty damn quick considering that this is a video game forum and there are only so many aspects of video games that you can talk about.

I've never said that, but I think older threads need to rest to make way for new discussion especially when people don't add anything different. If you bring new ideas to an old topic, it's no longer the same discussion. Unfortunately the PS2 recommendations don't have that, and I end up posting the same thing I do every time (I got tired of posting the same games). Feel free to report them too.

So wanting to get the personal opinions of the Escapist community and not using a Google search makes me lazy?

You do know that just about every thread ever has been done before right? Am I supposed to do a search every time I make a thread to make sure that it wasn't done a year ago?
The previous threads are the personal opinions of the Escapist, and if you noticed they haven't changed. Also the last thread was a little over a month ago [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.381745-Looking-for-PS2-recs]. I just post a list of the bigger threads so you can look through them for interesting games.
Yeah well the thing is I didn't know that there had been previous threads on this topic. I don't live on the escapist and I don't jot down every thread that is created. Also I don't really appreciate being called lazy. Even now that I've been told that there were previous threads just like this I don't regret my decision to do this because it adds more of a Human element to the whole thing and I can actually respond to people without getting shit for necroing a thread.

Fair enough but like I said I didn't even know that there had been previous threads like this and every time I want to make a thread I'm not going to scour the Escapist to make sure that someone else didn't talk about it two years ago. It's to much hassle on a website I consider to be about conversation and chilling out and frankly calling me lazy felt a bit uncalled for which is kind of why I didn't bother replying to that one and just moved on but did reply when you felt the urge to insult me for a reason I really just don't get. And yes you did indeed insult me considering that you made a fairly negative remark about me in a thread that I made for the purpose for advice so of course I was going to read it and see that you thought that I was lazy. Pardon me but I don't really appreciate being talked about that way when I'm considering buying a new console and want some recommendations for some games. To be frank you didn't have to click on this thread but you did for the sake of saying "oh look it's THIS thread again" which didn't contribute anything to the thread at hand and came across as kind of rude and to argue with people on this thread myself including, bumping it with every post and lengthening its lifespan despite the fact that you think it's tired and generic. So yeah, I don't find your point of view to exactly be sympathetic.

After a friend of a friend mentioned to me how awesome the Persona series was and how I should buy it I've been considering buying a Playstation 2. Gamestop still sells them at really low prices, Hell if I had bought a PS2 instead of Spec Ops the Line the last time I went up there I would've walked away with more cash. To be frank though this is just the straw that broke the camel's back. It doesn't help that Yahtzee keeps going on about the awesome games on it and just about everyone seems to agree with him, especially with games like God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, Ico, Silent Hill and the aforementioned Persona series. While this is all still hypothetical, especially with college coming up, if I was to buy a PS2 what games would you recommend me to fill my library with?
Kingdom Hearts (2 is good, but not AS good)
Maximo Ghosts to Glory (hard but awesome)
GTA San Andreas (vce city and 3 are also good, but havent aged as well)
Ico/Colossus of course
Metal Gear Solid 3 (one is on playstation/psn, 2 is for hardcore fans, get subsistence if you can)
SSX 3, SSX On Tour
Jak trilogy
Ratchet and Clank (the sequels all kinda suck, for various reasons, but are very playable. Weirdly, what should have been the worst sequel [Ratchet Deadlocked] is probably the best of the three. Also, the PS2 port of Size Matters is alright)
Soul Calibur 2 and 3 (especially 3)
Beyond Good and Evil
Devil May Cry 1 and 3 (If you like challenge, don't get the special edition with playable vergil. He isn't that much fun to play and the game was made much easier)
I should think of more, but I've just become aware of how many of my ps2 games are missing, and now I'm going to lie down and be very very sad for a while

If your offended by some random person on the internet calling you lazy I'd hate to see how sensitive you are in real life. However the escapist is suppose to be a nice place so I'm sorry for that.

I tried ignoring them but it didn't make them go away (amazingly it does work sometimes, if you ignore me I'll go away). So I figured if I kept calling people out on it maybe some will take notice, prolong the thread's lifespan is a small price to pay. Though I'm not that good with the whole sympathizing or caring thing, I'll take your advice and try that next time.
