Depending on your tolerance for pain and your devotion to games, Demon's Souls is a very satisfying play. It requires patience and using a lot of caution though, so it can get pretty frustrating.
Maybe Metal Gear Solid 4 if you've been exposed to the series and liked it at any point. (Admittedly, I never played any of the prior games and still enjoyed it but I'd read up on it, that might've made a difference.)
A personal recommendation would Valkyria Chronicles for a strategy/RPG. It's a bit texty though and the gameplay might seem odd at first.
For a list of games that I've played and enjoyed: Batman Arkham Asylum (the PS3 version has a bonus Joker segment), Assassin's Creed I & II, Borderlands, and Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2.

Demon's Souls has not been released in Britian yet, don't know how they had a copy at the store. You will probably need to import it, luckily you can play any game on any ps3 so a US or Japanese copy will work on your system. It's worth buying, if you are into action RPG's.Rydex said:

Worthwhile exclusives for PS3 (Not counting downloadables): Whatever ratchet N' Clank games are floating around, Little big planet, Valkyria chronicles, Demon's souls, InFamous. Yes, I am aware of Metal Gear, Uncharted, Killzone, and Resistance, but this list is for good games.
I have also just got a ps3 for christmas.
I got Uncharted 2, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Little Big Planet.
So far I've had an excellent time with all three games.
