Does Sony have enough memorable characters these days to make a Mascot Fighter? I mean, they DID back on the PS2. But they abandoned all their interesting characters when they thought BLURAY was a better mascot for their new system.
They've got Ratchet & Clank, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, God of War, inFAMOUS, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Fat Princess, Twisted Metal, Resistance... Need I go on? Also, Nintendo certainly abandoned several of the characters in Smash Bros., you know. Only reason why characters such as Pit got popular again, was because of Brawl. This could bring back people's attention to their older/obscure characters and franchises.

Sony doesn't even own Crash or Spyro at all. Activision does. Where have you been for the past several years?

I would have to see the character roster, but there is really no character that would interest me. I mean, MGS4 was on PS3 so I suppose they could have Snake, but he was in brawl so meh.

Yeah but look what they started with. Mario, Star Fox, Pokemon, and Samus. Characters that were relevant at the time because they had games on the N64 or the Gameboy at the time. That's why they didn't advertise Smash Bros as having Ness and Captain Falcon from that game you didn't play. They advertised Samus, Star Fox, and Mario. Most of the characters you brought up haven't been in a relevant game since the PS2 or were only seen in an HD collection. Sure Nintendo brought back some obscure characters, but it was after SSB was an established name.

I don't care if Ratchet can beat up Jak because they've not been relevant since the PS2.

I'm well aware of that but it doesn't mean he can't be in it. Last time I checked Nintendo doesn't own Solid Snake and Sonic The Hedgehog.

You're calling for Crash like it is supposed to happen. Like it's so obvious that it must happen. They don't own Crash, anymore, so, it isn't definite.

Snake got in Brawl because Kojima practically begged Nintendo to get him into... Melee. However, they were too far into the development to do this, so, they saved him a seat for Brawl... Nine years later. The got Sonic, because they had extra money left over from Kojima paying them to put Metal Gear content in. So, they asked the fans who they'd like to see (who wasn't a Nintendo character), and received a near-unanimous "SONIC!!!"

Crash could happen, but you're being to expectant of him.

Look I'm not expecting anything, I said it in a jokey way. I only said Crash Bandicoot because when you think of the PlayStation you think of him. Look at this thread [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.373112-EDIT-What-characters-do-you-want-to-see-in-Playstation-All-Stars-Battle-Royale?page=2] and see how often Crash gets mentioned. I'm not the only one who would like him in there, it would make sense for him to be in there, but I'm not gonna go off on one if he's not. Stop taking things so seriously and stop being such a killjoy

Don't forget Spyro, you can't have a sony SSB rip-off without Crash and Spyro. No Crash, No Spyro, No buyie!

That's true, they're like Laurel and Hardy, Torvill and Dean or Penn and Teller; can't have one without the other! First things you think of when you think PS1.

I'm expecting mediocrity. I'm prepared for suck.

I'm admittedly a little hopeful that this turns out well, and I do think there's a chance that it could. A small chance, of course. Small. Very small.

To all those saying it's just smash bros rip off you're right, however your forgetting one important detail. Game designers, authors, film makers and even song writters steal ideas from each other all the time and yes they are aware of it. There is no such thing as an orginal story so steal but steal with respect. Instead of saying it's a rip off try and see it as a homage to Smash bros. You never know it could be a good game, I rarely judge from the trailer or a review, I prefer to play it first hand but untill then I will wait further information.

Now if we can just get a game like this involving an anime character cast.

*MEGA FACEPALM* The Ratchet & Clank series has gotten FIVE outings on the PlayStation 3. SIX, if you count PlayStation Move Heroes, which also has Jak and Daxter in it.

On top of that, the original Super Smash Bros. was an unintended hit. It was just a side project that wasn't considered a big deal until it became incredibly popular. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale I can tell is purposefully building a lot more hype than Super Smash Bros. was originally aiming for. In which case, I see no reason why they wouldn't put in some of their more obscure characters.

Well, there was Jump Ultimate All-Stars (or something to that effect) for the DS with a buttload of Shonen Jump characters, but apparently due to licensing issues, it was never released in the US. Sucks, because it looked awesome.

Even if Crash and/or Spyro were to get in, we have to consider which "version" of both of them would get in.

You know what I mean.

I think it's a good idea.

Nintendo characters in the games are often so irrelevant to gaming in the first place, that it's amazing they're there in the first place.

A game with relevant characters seems much more interesting.

IM kinda suprised by this...I mean sony has a history of copying Nintendo but they dont really have an established roster of characters that are beloved and associated with the playstation brand. At least not to the level nintendo has.
yeah but you can't really say that they're ripping off of smash brothers. it wasn't exactly the most creative idea to begin with. It's still a GOOD idea, just not a creative one.

I am beyond excited for this.

I can't say I'm surprised by the amount of "it's just a lame Smash Bros. knock-off," but honestly, were any of you expecting Nintendo to be the only one to use this? It's a brilliant concept, and Sony isn't the first to take it for a spin. Cartoon Network tried it with Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion and before that, Shonen Jump had Jump Super Stars and Jump Ultimate Stars on the DS. (A trailer for the latter is provided below.)

And nobody seems to complain about how similar every other fighting game franchise is to one another. Tekken, Street Fighter, Dead or Alive and Mortal Kombat aren't very different outside of their character rosters. There isn't a terribly large amount of wiggle-room in this particular genre, I'm sure you'll find.

Here you go. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbMgmOSyBHg] It's probably the best fighter I've ever played on a portable.

There's really two things to say about this:
1. Will you play it?
2. Does it matter that it is copied from Nintendo?

My answer to the first is a simple "yes" because the concept should be pretty fun.

My answer to the second is a mix of "well that is nothing new" and "wtf Sony, really?". Sony has been copying Nintendo since the days of the PS2 for fuck sake, and their games (even their exclusives ffs) have been copying design elements of big Nintendo games. The fact that they copy so much from Nintendo that it stops being surprising, is really disappointing for Sony. The fact that they have to copy the Super Smash Bros idea from Nintendo, is really troubling.
I'm sure they will tweak it so it isn't a complete copy. Maybe make it darker and grittier or make it seem like one of the big bad guys is the bad guy, rather than a phantasmal hand in the background.

In the end, it doesn't really matter that Sony copied the idea from Nintendo, because having game characters fight against each other, is a really fun idea. I think Xbox would do it better since they usually do a better job of copying other developers, but also because there is a manageable amount of characters to put into their roster. No matter who Sony picks to put into the roster, there are going to be characters left out that will make people rage. Nintendo does it too, but Nintendo has been doing this for longer, and can keep making new ones with more characters.

I think if/when this becomes a thing, there will be DLC characters you can get to add to the roster.
As if DLC hasn't made people angry enough lately, lol...

Ever since I was a wee lad I've wanted to pit Spyro and Crash, and Jak and Ratchet against each other.

I swear if they can't get Crash and Spyro (and their successors) into this game I will be very upset.

Wait, I don't have a ps3 anymore.

... Better get on top of that, I guess.

Hey, it beats "fox only, no items, final destination" matches, amirite? :D

Seriously, whoever thought up the competitive scene for Smash Bros is an idiot.

And none of the charm? Seriously? Sackboy has more charm than over half the roster of Brawl.
