Snatcher. I got it thinking "Ah, this might be a bit of a lark, I'm bored as hell and want to play something to amuse me for a bit". Four hours later, I'm still playing it, only stopping because I have work in the morning.

I was half expecting to play Left 4 Dead for a half hour, get bored and go play something else. Now it's proably one of my favorite series and easily one of my most played games.

Oblivion, I saw my friend play it many times but I never thought it would really be any good because of the first-person perspective.

But holy shit, I have already put hundreds of hours into that game and I have only owned it for a month.

Expected nothing of Batman: Arkham Asylum, but just from the demo I got a pre-order. Definitely worth it.
Also, Mirror's Edge. Bought on a Steam deal long after it came out, and could find nothing of what Yahtzee disliked.
And Saints Row 2; poor reviews, but so far had more fun with it than GTA4.
I hear Saints Row 2 has a bit of a cult following now, (haven't played it, but my friend does), but I know from the few hours I played of Mirror's Edge, I really liked it.
Its was fairly tough, but so darn unique and the feeling you get when your on a role is so tremendous.

This is exactly the same as me, I thought it was ridiculous when I first heard about it and said it wouldn't work. Damn was I wrong D:

Dragon Age: Origins.

I knew nothing about this game when I bought it. I was completley fine with just ignoring it in favor of waiting for Mass Effect 2. But I had acquired a copious amount of cash and felt that I needed to spend it on something. I was thinking of buying an indie game, but my recent experience with Osmos [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.161590] made me reconsider. I saw the Deluxe Edition of Dragon Age: Origins during the Steam Christmas sale, so I thought "what the hell" and bought it.

I was rewarded with one of the best single-player gaming experiences I have ever had. The quality of that game was amazing to me, and I can't believe I had somehow ignored nearly everything about it up until recently. Definitely one of the better purchases I've made this year. I was really astounded by how good it was.

Mass Effect which I started playing recently.

Game play is good, dialogue is fine although slightly obscure and story is fucking awesome.

Yeah I'll stop. So, I'm willing to bet we've all had them; those games that you either completely manage to duck the hype of, dislike for no good reason from the moment you hear their name, or just generally don't give a shit about (not entirely unrelated to option 1). Then when you get to playing them, they can actually be great, if not awesome. Can any of you lovely bastards recall any of yours?

For me it would be playing the Dante's Inferno demo on Xbox recently. Yes, it is a shameless clone of God of War to the point that should make Kratos himself cry, but, I fucking love GoW so, roll on the release date :D
A diatribe was almost certainly in the works, beginning with "no, to the left is a series of avatars representing escapists," but instead I'll simply ask...

Huh?

Final Fantasy 7.
I'd never heard of it before my step-brother lent it to this one.
It changed me. I believe that is the best thing my step-brother ever did for me, and I will always be thankful to him for that.
There would be a much different one in my place this day if he hadn't...

That diatribe would've been a big mistake, you would've looked quite the fool
Anyone who knows my thread-creating style knows I nearly always start them with some kind of odd quip. It's like my 'thing'.

Mirror's Edge was pretty good, from what I saw of the demo, but then I bought the full game a was blown away. It was too short for it's own good, but I loved it anyway and still pick it up every now and then.

And Tropico 3. I downloaded the demo on a whim, and was instantly hooked, creating my own banana republic (and somehow getting full approval from both the capitalist and communist factions). I was also pleasantly surprised by how well the controls worked with the Xbox 360 controller, considering how messy Halo Wars felt.

I found it for $2 at a Gamestop, decided to pick it up, and it is the greatest fighting game I've ever played.
This exact same thing happened to me except replace your American dollars with English pounds. replace your American dollars with English pounds.

I'd never played a Devil May Cry game until I got my PS3 and got DMC4 and I loved it despite everyone I know not liking it.

Condemned: Criminal Origins - knew nothing about the game, rented it cause I needed something to do. Ended up beating the entire game in one sitting from about 11pm til 5-6am. Scared me shitless but man was it awesome.

The Darkness - Expected a fairly standard shooter but with supernatural powers. Instead I got a game with one of the most well presented and mature stories I've ever seen in a video game.
