For my dissertation I am looking at how the internet has changed gaming and how it will influence its future and it would be great if as many of you kind and helpful people as possible could fill it out for me. It will take no more than 5 mins.

Thank you everyone who complets it.

Are you sure dissertation is the word you're looking for? Your survey methodology seems a little flimsy for a doctoral thesis. What discipline are you in?

It is the right word. I am not doing a doctorate I am only doing a bachelors degree. As for the questionaire itself I did have to have it approved by my lecturer before I could send it out so it should be fine for what I need.

Completed the questionnaire for you. Good luck with your degree and with your dissertation! Hope it doesn't stress you out too much!

Wouldn't that normally be called a thesis, then? I've never seen "dissertation" applied to bachelor's theses before. As for the methodology, I was primarily referring to your sampling. While I lack full insight into what you're studying, from your description I have a hard time coming up with a compelling argument for handing out an open survey invitation on an online forum - even a gaming one. You're going to get a very skewed sample of the "gamer" population this way, and the troubling part is that you won't know exactly how it's skewed, just that it is. That makes it difficult to compensate. Granted, there are minor issues with your questionnaire as well, but that's on a more nitpicky level.

Also, upon looking at the questionnaire a second time I noticed you did indeed mention it was specifically for a bachelor's degree, and that it wasin computing strategy and management. Sorry for not reading properly.

Don't worry about it. The fact that you took the time to let me know some of the issues you had with it is a big help so thank you. You could well be right about not calling it a dissertation however it is what all of my lecturers have been calling it. As for my sampaling the Escapist is not the only place I am handing this out.

As Nomad stated, this is not a dissertation as a dissertation is a research project that must be presented and defended in front of a board. A dissertation usually spans the entirety of a doctoral education, about 3 to 7 years. Successful presentation and defense is needed to obtain a doctoral level degree, assuming the program requires it. Bachelor level degrees do not have dissertation in the classical sense although it looks like the wording of thesis and dissertation can be interchangeable depending on the setting.

That being said, I completed your survey OP. My criticisms include vague wording. For instance, 'Regularly' to me might mean 5 times a month but for you it could mean 20 times a week.

I completed it, although I'd have liked the option to be able to state whether I liked the particular directions that gaming was going (for example, I think digital-only distribution will probably happen, but I would hate for it to happen)

All the best with your work!

Nope, pretty standard in UK Universities to call a bachelor's a dissertation, OP is British so I imagine he's right for where he is and you're right for where you are.

Do you mind elaborating a little more on what you are studying? I saw in the survey you are looking at changes in gaming habits, do you have a older data set you are looking at? The escapist is (perhaps notoriously) anti-FPS and lukewarm on MMOs, so it would be interesting to compare our results to other general gaming forums. Good luck with your research!

I am looking at the way the internet has changed gaming, what new ways of gaming it has opened up, how it has effected both gamers and developers/publishers and where these changes could be leading.

The info from this Survay should help me to see what changes have had the biggest impact e.g do more people play regular online multiplayer over MMOs.

As for what I am studying it is computing stratergy and management which has a business focus with an IT twist and yes it really is as boring as it sounds :).

I have a couple of questions:

1. Why include the Dreamcast and not the N64? Or the PS2 and not Gamecube? Because I use those.
2. Why is the DS and 3DS on the same row? They are very different devices.
3. No GBA? I use it.

Was slightly confused at the possible difference between "always" and "regularly" for some of those last questions. How often would I need to buy DLC if I was "always" buying it as opposed to just "regularly" buying it, for example?

Aside from that, done. Hope you get what you need.

2 things: I don't just play on all the platforms I own proportionate amounts of the time. Currently I play mostly offline on my PC because FTL, but when I get Dark Souls 2, I will be playing mostly online, and in both cases every day, but at the moment, not at all on the PS3.

Secondly the population is gon b skewd. Not only are the people on the Escapist generally internet gamers, they're also a certain subsection, so I do hope you're spreading this survey around - although even if you were it would be far from a fair sample.

But, we work with what we have. Good luck.

To answer 1 and 3 I only included devices that have an internet connection and to answer 2 I was under the impression that the online features of the DS and 3DS were the same. Thanks for looking tho.

I am indeed spreading the survey around but as you said you work with what you have. And thanks for raising the question as if I had not I would have had problems.
