I've asked these sorts of questions at online forums before, usually to not very good results like "why would you want to go anywhere else" or something like that. I think some people view it as advertising and I think on some forums it isn't even allowed. But I'm hoping I'll get lucky this time. I've noticed tonight I'm a bit frustrated and tempted to behave badly. And stoop down to levels I shouldn't stoop down to.

I was wondering if you could help me. I need a new site. You see, I love video games, or at least, I think I do. Being on the Escapist makes me question that sometimes. I love thousands of video games, and so, naturally, I thought I would fit in here. But I think that perhaps, things haven't gone optimally.

And yet, somehow I don't belong here. That long list of games I like wasn't for you to read all of, it was to prove a point that when I think of all the games I like, versus the games that I don't, I feel like I enjoy most video games in general. But somehow what I like doesn't fit around here, me, and the Escapist, aren't the same kind of video game fan. I don't enjoy most of what the Escapist likes, and the Escapist hates what I like with a passion.

So I need somewhere else to go. If you know my tastes, and you probably do, as notorious as I am, where I could go. A website that would be fitting for my video games tastes and desires. Someplace not completely alienating, even, would be good enough. I really want someplace to talk about video games that I like. I don't like being alone, and I hate to sound melodramatic by saying that, but I don't have an online community like that right now. Therefor, I'm kind of alone in terms of online communities. Not completely, but fairly so. And I don't want to be.

So please please help me. Help me say goodbye to the Escapist, and hello to greener pastures. And thank you for your time.

I don't know you, I don't care to know you and well there's a little oblivion coming out of me but you seem decent I don't know why any one would take issue with you but the problem is all online gaming communities and discussion areas will be the same.

Escapist is not much better but it's a stones throw away from the others, stay a while... and listen.

I find this forum to be right in that grey area where it's too moderated to actually say anything offensive, but not quite moderated enough to make it an offense-free-zone. You end up with a lot of very carefully worded comments with barely hidden insults designed to just scrape under the radar, but land a solid punch on arrival none the less.

The community is also insanely quick to jump on anything they can. I think the mod presence that keeps them under wraps sees them coiled like a spring to pounce on anything they can actually get away with. Example: start a thread just for random fun (nothing bad, just harmless pictures or something) and very quickly you'll have a dozen people rhetorically asking what the point of the thread is in some devious ways. The term ad-hominem may as well be the forum's motto.

While none of this is that bad at all, when you put it all together you end up with a very neutered community, either circle-jerking or dropping stealth bombs-come-insults. It's all very... bland. Of course the opposite end of the spectrum sees virtually no moderation at all and creates a shitstorm that gets nothing done. You want to aim for that middle area where people can just have fun and say what they want, but with just enough moderation to stop people from just posting a paragraph long essay on why they hate you and how they're gonna fuck your mother.

It's the freedom to say what you want, to ignore those you dislike rather than cry to a mod, with just enough rule to keep an argument from turning into an insult contest. Sadly, that is not the case here. It's a subtly hostile community of otherwise good people, unable to behave how they actually would in real life in any situation that sees them in disagreement. Yeah, telling someone to fuck off or starting a thread dedicated to finding words that rhyme with spoon is fairly pointless, but what's the harm? We can be idiots and have fun without turning into 4chan.

Gonna throw my 2 cents in here, I don't know almost anything about you personally but I did come across the Minecraft thread when it started. And people here are completely correct, it's really hard to relate to people when that is how you put yourself across. The issue here has nothing to do with what people like and don't like. It has EVERYTHING to do with the attitude you put forward. We could recommend all kinds of different communities, but if you keep up your current attitude, you will find yourself leaving those just as quickly.

To be honest, you shouldn't have posted this. I would request that the admins lock/delete this post, because its just really embarrassing.

I'm going to give you some advice:

• - Learn how to use the LIST BBCode.
  - Use Google to find things you're looking for that may be controversial if you don't want to get burned.
