IGN has a very strong forum community.
And now to quote something that isn't derailing the thread with pointless drama.

Thanks! I really appreciate these posts which are about helping me actually find a good forum.

I have an account on IGN. I just never used it. I've been considering trying to get more into it for a while now, but it was one of those things that seemed like more effort that it was worth at the time, every time. I've also forgotten my login by now.

What all is good about IGN, exactly? I hear they like Nintendo games around there, that kind of gets me excited about being there.

Is that really all the games you like? o_O
Probably not even close. But that was all the energy I had.

For actual contribution, I say go to Facepunch.
Appreciate it!

If I might ask though, could you describe their culture some and what kinds of games they tend to like, and what kinds of games might ruffle some feathers if I tried to post about? Most game forums have "that one game" everyone likes to hate on, and will start trouble if you bring it up or say you like it. I don't want to make that mistake, and I don't want to spend several days or weeks lurking to find out.

for some reason i immediately thought of gaia online, they have a pretty good forum, and most people there like anime.
R-Really... I've never used Gaia Online. But... I didn't typically hear good things about it. No offense to anyone. I don't know how Gaia Online is. Just, usually when I hear about it it's...

I'm going to be one of those people who say that I have honestly never had an issue with any of your posts and actually quite enjoy a large majority of what you've had to write. Regardless of whether or not you find a new gaming community, I hope you find whatever it is you're looking for.
Awwwww, I don't know whether I should be responding to praise posts. As it probably would make me look... yeah.

But I couldn't pass this up. I'd at least have to PM you and tell you thanks if not quoting you. It's nice to know, that even now, I have folks that like me around.

And thanks to everyone who said that. Even if I do find another forum, I'll probably still come here from time to time. And I'm glad some people have enjoyed my posts.

Curious though, what have you heard of it?
Bad English, immaturity, low tolerance for "intellectual" or "educational" subjects.

Basically, lots of people who like to things with posts like "lol wow" and "lol ur dumb XDDDDDD" and stuff like that. That's what I've heard.

You implied, for instance, that this place was completely alienating.
Well, I have gotten a lot of responses over time with people saying things like "we(the Escapist) don't like that stuff".

That appeared to be an issue. So my natural response was to allude to that. I doubt people would have responded differently because it would have been obvious why I was making the thread even if I didn't make it obvious.

Also, it is kind of alienating. People are insisting I am rude when I am being civil or joking, just because my position is controversial. People call me aggressive when I am playful and passive. And people outright tell me I need to take a hint and stop posting about stuff because "the Escapist doesn't like that". When people are desperately searching through your words to find some "aggressive" tone to use against you, well...

I can't say that I much enjoy company that is inflammatory towards me while insisting that I am being inflammatory. And insist on interpreting my jokes and every other word as an insult.

As Overpuce said in the first response, I have never taken exception to anything you have posted, and have often enjoyed the posts. I didn't read through the entire list, but after skimming over it, I'd have to say that for the most part, I'd agree with your choices (I won't lie, some I would disagree on, but I'd never judge someone based on the games they like). I can't tell you what other communities are out there, as this is basically the first I tried, and I really like it.

They like pretty much everything over at IGN, pretty much every genre of game over there has at least one major subforum where fans of that type tend to gather. I was originally a member of the Zelda community, but after a few years I started exclusively posting on the Vestibule. The Vestibule is my favourite board, basically being an anything goes off-topic forum. It is a lot more lax with the rules than you find over here, you're not allowed to cuss, but at the same time you're not going to be banned for "being insensitive".

Each community within IGN tends to differ from one another, but most of them are quite positive. The Vestibule is the only difficult community to become an actual member of, you've got to be recognizable for something you've done on the Vestibule or other websites. I had my psychopath gimmick and "I Became Erection".

I guess some things really don't change.

So please please help me. Help me say goodbye to the Escapist, and hello to greener pastures. And thank you for your time.
Seriously, focus on the things that we, on The Escapist, have in common with you. Judging from the list of games, there's a heck of a lot of things there. Don't give up hope on this site because you can't talk about a niche game in a niche genre. Nobody likes stuff they're not personally interested in forced down their throats, I know. People here have had enough of Touhou babble. But hey, it's either the chans or $10 on an account on Something Awful for you then, if you really want to leave that much.

Shouldn't I focus on finding a community that likes what I like instead of forcing myself to talk about games I'm less interested in because other people want to talk about it?

Okay, good reason to find somewhere that enjoys more than two Touhou threads. Because I like to talk about that.

Oh come on, let's not bring up this argument again.

I'll say this. If Escapist considers a game franchise like Touhou not only obscure, but too obscure to be worthwhile and worth talking about. Then my tastes in video games are probably not mainstream enough for this site. In fact, every time I mention my tastes, I wind up coming across somebody who says "the Escapist doesn't like that", as if I wasn't good at taking a hint and had to finally be told.

And what I'm constantly told, is that the Escapist doesn't like retro games, the escapist doesn't like cute games, the Escapist does not like scrolling shooters, the Escapist does not like retro games, and so on and so forth. Their words, not mine. I'm sure there's a minority of people that feel different. But I'm not sure I should just continue being a vocal minority and struggle to talk about games that I like. I don't enjoy sifting through a million Mass Effect and Elder Scrolls threads, trying to find a Harvest Moon thread or even a Zelda thread.

Outside of jRPGs, scrolling shooters are quite possibly my second favourite genre of video game. So of course I'm going to want to talk about them.

There is a Touhou user group, you can chat about it there. Believe it or not, any online community will have opinions that differ to yours. Different people like different things. Person A might like Touhou and Person B might like Touhou but disagree over which games are the best, for example. I presonally, love Puchi Carat (an old Japanese arcade game.) but I don't complain when people don't want to talk about it.

Okay, good reason to find somewhere that enjoys more than two Touhou threads. Because I like to talk about that.
Those two Touhou threads have crashed and burned into flame wars, I heard. That's probably mainly the reason why people don't like it.

Let's not. It's niche where I'm from and I'm sorry for living in the middle of nowhere (Wales.) Just sayin'

Well, how do you have over two thousand posts without this hullabaloo?
