ok, im just going to say that im an idiot and i feel really dumb right now, but im hoping that some of you are smarter than

i was browsing the web and a popup came up, it forced my pc to download a file, and started to open up a bunch of stuff, so i went to the ctrl alt delete, but then it stopped me from being able to do anything, so i, not knowing what to do restarted the pc hoping that the problem would go away

of course it didn't

i opened windows defender, because im cheap and dont have another virus protection on my pc, and it opened a noticably different defender,in fact it says at the very top bar unregistered version like its mocking me

so i right clicked the link to open windows defender to see if i could find the source of the redirect, and it opened up notepad with a program written on it,
i also tried to find the actual folder the damn thing is in so i can delete it but so far no luck

can someone tell me how to save my pc

Open My Computer, go to /c drive then delete the Windows and Program Files folders. If you're on Vista or Windows 7 just delete Program Data and Program Files.

By the way, files aren't just randomly downloaded to you on your computer whilst browsing the 'net. You probably clicked a popup or a fishy link. Smartly done by the way.

Sounds like someone forgot to sacrifice there weekly goat to Bill Gates.

But seriously, a similar thing happened to me. I just bought some cheap virus protection at Walmart, it took almost 5 hours to scan literally everything on the computer. It would say what it was scanning really fast, I noticed the names of units from Rome: Total War.

Now in does a scan every Sunday at like 3am, and theres been no problem sense.

I wouldn't listen to them about that, just get tech help from a call center or something.

[HEADING=1]DO NOT DELETE SYSTEM 32![/HEADING]
Download a free antivirus software, like "Avast! Antivirus".

On a side note, I'm ashamed of you guys for suggesting that, we're supposed to help people, not tell them to do something that will make their computer inoperable. Seriously, what is wrong with you people? I love a good joke, but there's nothing funny about costing someone hundreds of dollars to get a new computer, which is what deleting System32 will do.

No. Do not, under any circumstances, delete System 32.
That would be VERY VERY bad.

I have no clue on how to fix your problem right now, but just try getting a free antivirus program.
Remember, Deleting System 32 is baaaad.

Honestly, what is wrong with your head?
How little of a soul do you need to tell someone to do that?
It's not funny to trick someone into ruining their computer, it's just fucking wrong.
I'm ashamed in you, and I hope you are ashamed in yourself as well.
People like you make me so angry it's indescribable.

A core Windows folder. Do not delete this folder.

I recommend starting with AVG Free [http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage]. Beyond that, especially if it's not Viral, then you'd do well with Spybot [http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html] and Adaware [http://www.lavasoft.com/]. Those are the baseline options.

I wish I knew more about virus removal, but I tend to reformat my OS. If that doesn't help you, just about any computer repair shop in just about every town offers virus removal. It costs a little, but I do recommend that as a decent solution.

Or you can pop in your boot disk and reformat from the ground up. Your call.

Warmest regards,
Nuke

Oh very helpful.

Download a free antivirus program such as AVG or Avast and see if it can get rid of the virus. Otherwise your best bet is to reinstall windows. I can't be bothered to explain how to do that.

Yeah, but they won't have to worry about the virus anymore.

You can get Avast! and AVG for free off of their web sites. The free versions aren't as good as the premium, but they should work. In the future, call tech support or a local computer repair shop. DO NOT trust everything you hear on the internet, and never erase a core file without consulting professional help.
