I don't understand why it's always the Pokemon franchise that everyone hates on. Legend of Zelda and Mario have probably had just as many games as Pokemon has, if not even more, which I'm pretty sure is the case, especially considering how many mario spin offs there's been. But they get no ridicule, it's always Pokemon.

Another thing I don't understand is why everyone says gen 5 is the worst. Half the pokemon created in gen 4 were evolutions on families from way earlier generations? And you call gen 5 unoriginal, when what they did was reboot the series with a whole new target audience, a whole new place (america instead of japan), and a whole new bunch of pokemon. Sure the golden oldies came back in the aftergame but so what, everything you encountered in the main story was brand new.

I'm not denying that there were some bad designs in gen 5, because there were. But gen 5 is not the only culprit. Heck, look at gen 1. Muk? Dugtrio? Voltorb? A pile of sludge, a 3 way clone of its pre-evolution and a poke ball. Very creative. In gen 5 we have a haunted chandelier that takes humans souls.

All I'm saying is, stop letting nostalgia cloud your judgement. Please?

I hope you have a powerful flame shield for when the Pokemon fans come out of the woodwork.

Anyway.

I'm not a huge fan of the Gen. 5 Pokemon designs, they're largely unimpressive to me, but I have to say one thing in favor of the games: Black & White developed a much more in-depth story than had been previously used. Which... is really a bit of a double-edged blade for the Pokemon franchise.

Black & White's opening feels much slower than the previous generations did, because there is a significantly larger amount of text and exposition being thrown out in the player's face before they even get to the first gym in relation to how the previous games have all gone about it (Note: I'm not actually sure about whether this is true for Platinum, Diamond & Pearl because... well, I don't remember those games anymore). It decided to take the story much more seriously than before, so I'll give props to Nintendo for that.

But as a person who doesn't care about the competitive side of Pokemon and/or isn't young anymore... I'm just feeling like Pokemon isn't really the franchise for me anymore. Nintendo put a heavier emphasis on the story in Black & White, but they didn't really do anything to change up the combat formula since the previous generation, except making the computer AI slightly more difficult to fight by buffing their stats. Artificial difficulty. Annoying.

Eh, I'm not going to tell other people to stop buying Pokemon games, but I don't think they're really for me anymore.
I'd hate to twist your words, but I have a similar sentiment summed up into two words; grow up. I watched Pokemon when it first came out (I even taped it, and Christ that makes me feel old, VHS for the lose), and had the first two generations of the games. But I just couldn't be interested after that. If you are disliking the iterations of the series that they are putting out now, then quit.

Wow, people in this thread really needed a slap on the hand when they were typing.

The OP said that he loved the original games and that he was going to show them to his kids.

HOW. DOES. THAT. IMPLY. THAT. THE. NEW. GAMES. RUINED. THE. FIRST. ONES?

Really, you people have amazing mind reading skills if you can tell that from the OP.

You grew up. You got older. And now, you don't enjoy the new games as much as you enjoyed the older games when you were a kid. Sounds like you have a TRAGIC variation of Star-Wars-Fan-Itis.

Just because you don't like the series anymore doesn't mean it shouldn't exist. It's bigger than it's ever been, and it'll continue to grow whether you like it or not.
How does that relate? The Star Wars prequels were different from the original trilogy, fact. Totally different from Pokemon's case, since the games stay pretty much true to it's roots.

If I can still enjoy Super Metroid after playing Other M, you can still enjoy the old pokemon after playing Black and White.

If black and White's pokemon were the original's, would you feel the same way? Well...maybe. But I personally doubt it.

What? Red? How? Where? Why? What?

Yeah, I saw this and responded with "Shut up and take my money".

I'm also wondering why everyone has to pick on poor Vanillite and Trubbish. Surely if gen 5 is the worst ever, there's more than two good examples of "poor design".

Pokemon was pretty much my childhood. I remember getting a Gameboy for my birthday and playing Red version. I watched the Anime, bought some of the movies on VHS too. I was a big fan of it when I was a kid. Hell, I even collected the trading cards. Silver was brilliant for me and that moment at the end where you face off against 'Red', AMAZING.

I still look back on it and think about those memories, but I do fear those memories will be tainted by the new releases. I get the feeling that Nintendo might not just milk the cow till it's balls drop off, they might just take a Chainsaw and hack it into pieces.
