I only have a few games for my DS, but my favourite is Pokemon White. Might not be exactly what you're after when you say RPG, but I enjoyed it a hell of a lot.
It definitely isn't an RPG, but Room 215: Hotel Dusk surprised me. Good story, good characters and interesting gameplay. I recommend having a look at some gameplay first though, as it might not be to everyone's tastes.
Hotel dusk seems quite interesting, but a quick wiki search says that it involves using the micrphone to solve cases. Does that mean it involves screaming at the DS? I mostly play on public transport so that could get awkward.
Ah, thought you might already have the Gen V of Pokemon. I mean, everyone I know with a DS has it. Still, thought I might as well throw it in there just on the off chance...
I think you might have to use the mic, though if that's the case, I haven't got that far yet. Even though I enjoy the game, I'm not very good at it. Sorry I can't be of more help.
Radiant Historia is an RPG that resembles the 16-bit era Japanese light RPGs with PS1 era quality story. Atlus is releasing a new print of the game because the first print has sold out. You need to grab your copy as soon as possible. This game actually convinced people blinded by nostalgia that it was better than Chrono Trigger. This is certainly an accomplishment. I suggest you grab your copy ASAP because other games you're likely to buy are probably released by bigger companies such as Squeenix or Nintendo and are much easier to find.
The story involves time traveling, BTW. It is important to say since people don't seem to like that premise a lot.

It's not better than Chrono Trigger or all the classics, not really even on their level. Again I recommend it, and it's good compared to the vast amount of shovelware coming out right now, but it's deeply flawed, mostly on the balance side. Any character without a push ability is completely useless, and you must have at least 1 magic user in the party and 1 person with an AoE heal. Soooo, you're stuck with 2 possible compositions (I won't spoil who, you'll figure it out).
You also have to backtrack and repeat parts of the game a ton of times, especially if you accidently miss something. You can skip through the dialogue, but not the semi-random fights (some you just can't avoid) and bosses. The side quests are hidden so well that your average "talk to everyone once" won't find them since you have to talk to everyone multiple times and sometimes at different times to find them (I got to pretty much the end and quit, by then I had done 1 sidequest and had none in my log).
In spite of those bits, the story is fun, characters are cool, and the concept is very fun. I still recommend it, but it's not as perfect as you're making it out to be.
Alright, spoiler time in which I break the battle system:
1) 2 bruisers (Stocke and Raine/Rosch are the best) 1 healer (Marco is the only option, Aht is shit).
2) Postpone the bruisers' turns while healing every Marco turn so you don't die. Repeat until the turn bar is full.
3) Put Marco's turn first, then stack all of Stocke's, then all of Raine/Rosch's turns.
4) Stack all enemies on 1 square with Marco/Stocke then use whichever attack hurts them the most every single turn with Rosch/Raine.
5) Rinse and repeat, only taking breaks to use items with all of your characters for extra MP or Health after a huge boss attack. One run through should win any normal battle off the bat.

I never said it convinced all fans. I am convinced that it is better than Chrono trigger with a much better storyline and characters. I am also convinced your problems with only a few characters being useful is imaginary.
Generally in the begining move assaults are really the best way to go, which is easy because all the party members you have available have them. Later you will find out if you try to, that attacks that target a fixed spot in the grid are particularly powerful, especially if you build your combo count.
You can cause much more damage with building your combo and then using an area attack later in the game when you acquire abilities such as Will o' Wisp, Burst Light. Then there are characters that are particularly competent in building the combo chain, such as Rosch, Aht, Marco and gafka, with their multiple hits attacks (Musou, Dancing Death, Spin Slash, etc).
Try a Musou, Burst Light and Will o' Wisp combo. Or a Dancing Death, Fire Blade and Qigon Wave combo.
If you attack intelligently you won't have need for much healing and you can use almost any party. Also, Raynie is probably the weakest character in the game. Her magic is inferior to both Eruca's and Aht's traps. She is still useable though.
I was recommended to a game called "Glory of Heracles" a while back. Picked it up for around 15 bucks and got a decent 30 hours out of it. (Not including New Game+) So ya, good visuals and a pretty good story... so if you see it you should pick it up IMO.
