start with the 4 that i see as having reinvigorated metal
Trivium, Pantera, Machine Head, and Death
Ascendancy is the best Trivium album(no, its not the Crusade, of anything thats their worst), Panteras all around good at and after cowboys from hell, I prefer Machine Heads newer stuff (ie, Unto the Locust) and Death is just all around awesome, but their best album is Human.

If u like melodeath try Arch Enemy, Archon, Return from Exile, Serenity in Murder, and Dreamshade

If u prefer metalcore check out Rise to Remains Bridges will Burn EP, dont bother with their album City of Vultures tho, they sold out hard, thot theyd be worth mentioning since their lead singer is Bruce Dickinson's son.

Not a huge metal nut, but I found this recently, after a friend told me there was an Iron Maiden song inspired by Dune....
Just thought you might find that interesting, if nothing else.

WHEN YOU SEE THE WHITE WHALE!

Also apparently I'm retarded, because no matter how much I look at how to do it in quotes I cannot get the Youtube embedding to work.

Dream Theater covers a wide variety of rock/metal hardness, but they're really, really good.

All That Remains is also good metalcore.

(Over 50 vocal tracks in "And Then There Was Silence"? Fucking incredible.)
But yes, Nightfall in Middle-Earth is also an exceptional album. As will be the full LotR journey concept album they're working on (or rumored to be working on).
Yeah, someone's actually made an 8-bit version of quite a few of their songs, good replications to my ear, though a little on the quiet side. But yeah, "And then there was Silence" is just a completely epic song.

LOTR concept album you say? I haven't heard these rumors, though they intrigue me.

EDIT: Oh, and how could I forget to add Demons & Wizards? I feel bad now.

Tyr, more specifically the albums "How Far to Asgaard" and "By the Light of the Northern Star". Also, their cover of Sabbath's "I" is pretty awesome.

I mean, I saw it on their Wikipedia page, but I still want to believe it so much.

Think Nightfall but following the entire LotR trilogy in one huge compilation.

Go ahead, change your pants, it's alright. :p

SABATON! YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO SABATON. Great powermetal band, they sing in english and usually about historical wars/battles.

Good ones to get started on:
Primo Victoria
Attero Dominatus
Screaming Eagles
Coat of Arms
40-1
Into the fire

Megadeth's first few albums are awesome[...]
As is much of their later discography, which is all unfairly lumped together and labeled as inferior.

Seriously, SolemnHypnotic, check out Megadeth's 'The System Has Failed' and 'Endgame'. Those albums kick some almighty arse.

Ah, good, I'm glad somebody recommended Dream Theater; it means I don't have to. Great choice of song there, by the way. "Lost Not Forgotten" is easily the second best song from their latest album (which is an amazing record, I must say).

Let's get some classic heavy metal in here!
Ah, much better. Nothing like classic metal to brighten the day.

EDIT:
Oh, what the heck, let's get some modern heavy metal in here too. Heavy metal for everyone!

-"Silent Wars" by Arch Enemy (Melodic-Death/Black?)
-"Souls of Black" by Testament (Thrash w/ a liiiitle blues influence)
-The entire "Ride the Lightning" album from Metallica (my favorite album from my favorite band)
-"BYOB" by System of a Down (really weird but awesome metal, kinda like Prog-Metal but with regular time sigs and notes that sound good together :p)
-"Hold Back the Day" by Devil Driver (Awesome Groove Metal, something a LoG fan ought to enjoy.)
-"Chiron" by All That Remains (Newer Metalcore stuff, not usually MY kind of thing but this song is really good.)
Hope that helped a bit. :)
