I'm just sick of hearing about how so many people think motion controls are shit and blaming the Wii, especially when it was Sony that really started it off. Have we all forgotten Dance Dance Revolution? Or the EyeToy? DDR was huge, and the EyeToy failed horribly, which doesn't look good for Kinect, because it's the same damn peripheral. It's not the controls that are the problem, it's how they're used, and for the most part, it's only first party titles that have the best support and ideas for them. The best way to handle these things is not to treat the waggling as a separate control device, but just another button on the controller. Look at the Wii version of Twilight Princess. I've heard it's not quite as strong as the GameCube version(I don't know, I've only played the Wii version), but it stands up very well because it wasn't focused heavily on movement. No More Heroes did it pretty well too.

My point is, it's not the motion controls themselves that are the problem, it's how the developers use them.

And for any of you who are saying these kinds of things because Yahtzee does, grow a spine and learn to form your own damn opinion. The guy's hilarious, but not some form of a god.

I'm not inherently against motion controls, I'm against the way developers use them. As you said.

Hell, the Metroid Prime games IMPROVED with motion controls. And improved a lot, too.

1:1 motion control is going to suck. Motion controls work best when they use small, basic gestures to trigger bigger motions. Like swiping the Wiimote for Mario's spin attack. Or doing a small little jab for a melee attack (like Resistance 2).

No, the motion controls themselves are pretty shit. When the best examples you can name are the ones who play it down, that suggests that eliminating them altogether would be an even bigger improvement.

They're pointless, and they're just confusing developers.

Funny, because I always thought that most people who bitched about motion controls are bitching about how developers use them to pump out shovelware or dilute their good game to incorporate it, rather than the hardware themselves.

People blame the Wii because that's the system that highlighted the fact that developers are using it to pump out shovelware. Sony's shovelware on the PS2 had almost nothing to do with the EyeToy in the grand scheme of things, but a lot of the Wii's can be directly linked to the Wii-mote.

On a side note, DDR is not a motion game. It's a motion game in the same way that Halo is a motion game; you move a body part to put pressure on a specified piece of material electrically linked to the console in order to input a command to the game. It's just that DDR wants you to use your feet rather than your thumb to do it.

I don't mind motion controls at all, might actually pick up move for Dead Space Extraction and SOCOM 4 depending on how SOCOM turns out.

And you are right, lots of Wii games do it right, a great example is Okami. Really took great advantage of the controller.

I am getting tired of threads bitching about people bitching.

they kinda suck compared to contrellers and keyboard + mouse combo. If they can't be used as efficiently than the ones cuttently used, then I see no point in them. Take Super Smash Bros Brawl on the wii as an example. Anyone using a wiimote will automatically lose to someone using a gamecube controller. Always.

DDR uses a dance pad right? Well the NES had one of those in the 80's. The NES also had the Power Glove but I don't know if that qualifies as motion control.

I agree that bitching is pointless. People will make their point with how they use their dollar/pound/yen/euro/etc and that should send the right sort of message about whether or not motion control is genuinely wanted.

Personally, I couldn't give a shit about motion control. The Wii has a layer of dust on it and I haven't seen a single thing that would make me want to spend my cash on the games/systems.

I do fear that some good titles/franchises will take a bloody nose by making compromises and gimmicky play for motion control. But we'll get over it.

Bitching about motion Controls is clearly an hardcore thing. motion Controlled mini games are so fun! more fun then conventional Controls.
ofcourse it just doest work aswell in like pvp games or hardcore challenging titels where the 0,01mm in the 0,01 second is make or break.
in summery: motion Controls make fun games and will not be fit for the truly hardcore

Agreed.

I'm all for creating more innovative controls, but it should remain at your fingertips not your biceps.

I'm not against their development as long as they stay away from the kind of gaming I know and love. The day developers focus on producing games that are motion control based over controller based is the day gaming dies.

I would, but I figure if I did someone would tell me to stop bitching.
Ba-zing.

I don't know about anyone else, but I thought Twilight Princess for the Wii blew goats in comparison to the GC version. I prefer having actual control over when and how Link swings a sword, instead of wiggling my wrist for a while hoping the remote will respond properly.

There's still a delay between action-response, small-gesture controls are generally lame (shaking my wrist makes me spin? Why?), and 1:1 motion control will be a laborious pain in the ass. Usually when an interface has so many limitations people have the good sense to move on to something different.

I think the problem is that developers get lazy. When motion controls are done right (Resident Evil 4 for example) they're pretty damn awesome. But like others have said, most companies just use them for remote-waggling minigames, and games aimed squarely at kids and grandparents, and therefore it's got a shitty rep with gamers. It's not so much the technology itself but the appallingly lazy way it's being utilized, and the ridiculous amount of shovelware tat that is being created for it.

I don't think anyone would mind the arrival of motion controls if it meant it was just an alternative (and perfectly awesome) way to play games you'd typically play, but it's the fact that Kinect and Move seem to be more signalling the arrival of a bunch of pet and sport games on their respective consoles. And just look how Nintendo's reputation has fallen. Sure they're doing amazingly, but they're almost a joke amongst most gamers today, compared to being THE gaming company.
