In terms of stakes I was going to say SAO but Girls Und Panzer and Btoom! Both ramp up pretty quickly. Btoom! really turns up the violence and how fucked up some of the characters are by episode 3 with a kid that before the story takes place was abused by his Dad, kills and then rapes 3 women and kills his Dad when the story takes place.
IT'S FANTASTIC. Go watch the rest of it right now. I don't care if you have classes or exams, go watch it. Also the first 4-ish episodes take up 2 years of time. The light novels have a weird way of doing it but it's just filler until Asuna and Kirito have the strength to do the higher level stuff which is what they do for most of the story. Easily one of my favourite anime series of the year and I can't wait for the next episode!
Looking for Group comic.. first page: in the first 2 panes a handsome elf is talking joyously with the creatures of the forest, by the 9th pane a zombie is burning a bunny alive, by page 2 a man is killed in front of his child by the elf, and by page 3 the elf has been incinerated by the zombie.

No spoiling, I only got through 4 episodes yesterday. Spent my day looking forward to going home and watching. (Why did I say playing to begin with? Well, kinda makes sense...)
It was like "hey you're now a legit superhero! Guess what, you just so happen bump into your former lover and it turn out you were part of a greater superhero race and etc"
At the start it was just an ecchi but hilarious anime but somewhere at episode 10/11, when those villains hurt that character, the main character went apeshit/ berserk and reveal he's was like a god like being to the point that the angels/ higher ups had to put him in a alternative reality and making his life miserable just to contain him!
Has someone mentioned Eureka seveN? Or AO for that reason?
Just watch the first 5 min of the first episode, then jump ahead 1-2 episodes, shit gets done.
Just fineshed playing rage and found my self at the last level going "wait im here already? who was i fighing? why was i fighing them? whos gunna clean up all this mutant goo?
Prometheus. One minute they were marvelling at the wonders of unknown alien technology and the next the captian had figured out that it was a bio-weapons manufacturing plant meant to deliver a deadly payload to Earth. Excuse me, aren't you paid to just fly the goddamn ship!
See! It's amazing! There's a crushing disappointment in episode 15 and you will feel uncomfortable around Kirito's sister (not spoiling anything) later in the series but apart from that it's great!
Street Fighter IV does it too. Half of the origin stories are "Hmm, there's something odd about this fighting tournament" and end with "OH NO I'M TRAPPED IN AN EXPLODING EVIL COMPLEX OF EEEEEVILLLLLLL" over the course of twenty minutes.

Yes, the first time the new villain for the second arc was unveiled several obscenities at my computer screen. WHY CAN'T THEY BE HAPPY!? I'm also looking for the original source material to see if any stuff was either cut completely or was only lightly touched on in the anime.
Dog Day Afternoon springs to mind... mostly because of the poster:
Actually, most heist films qualify.
The start of Tomorrow Never Dies is a great example too- what at first is just a 'one man and a camera' surveillance mission quickly turns into a raging firefight to prevent a nuke getting accidentally detonated by an incoming cruise missile. A missile that cannot be aborted, either.
Recently watched a French movie called Subway. Started in the middle of the plot, everybody knowing everyone and acting weird. Spent a good half hour clueless. After that the movie just went to a griding halt. The conflict pretty much faded away and the main character who was being chased by the police, hitmen and a crazy woman, forced to hide in the subway tunnels(or he already lived there, I don't know), decided it was time to assemble a band.
We didn't even get to know what the papers he had stolen off camera in the beginning of the movie was!
Was cool to see the Highlander guy speak French however.
Saw another movie before that(bought myself a Luc Besson collection box) that didn't make much sense either. It's called Le Dernier Combat(The Last Battle), has no dialogue and is filmed in black and white. Begins in the middle of whatever plot there was and we're left clueless once again.
I think I managed to puzzle it all togeather after the end, though my theories are a long shot.
Might be artsy, or a way to capture the audience, but I prefer it when movies doesn't cut right to chase without giving us any hints as to what's going on.
That Jason Statham movie called Safe. There is not even a little bit of filler in that movie. It's just BAM! Here's the hero! BAM! Here's the conflict! BAM! Here's the heroes motivations!
I'm just going to point out a film called "A Lonely Place to Die". Early on, a major character almost falls off a mountain he's climbing, bringing the film to make you believe that's the most perilous type of thing you can expect from the film. Then, it quickly drops rock-climbig in favor of everyone finding a child imprisoned underground for ransom and they try to bring her to safety while being hunted down by her gun-wielding captors.

You can read the entire thing online here! There's a manga being published based on the success of the anime but the original is a light novel. So yes, that means you actually have to read it lol
Mods, if you read this, it isn't promoting piracy. There isn't an English version yet and I don't think there will be for the foreseeable future.
I'm playing through Sonic Generations right now, and I'd say it definitely qualifies. Everything starts out cool, Sonic is at a birthday party with all his friends, eating a chili-dog, and then BAM!! An evil time-devouring ************ comes out of nowhere and steals his friends . . . and ruins his chili-dog.
