Dont force yourself to play a game you dont like, just watch a lets play.
Watching somebody else try to figure out an AG is a million times more tedious.

The TS has got the right idea to just simply follow a walkthrough for the game instead, but where he goes wrong is thinking he's missing out on anything special, if all he wants from the games is the crappy stories.

Wanted to post exactly this. Kudo's!

The Monkey Island series, Sam and Max and Full Throttle have already been mentioned, but I can also highly recommend <a href=https://www.gog.com/game/beneath_a_steel_sky>Beneath A Steel Sky. BaSS has been freeware since ~2000, so there's absolutely no harm in having a look, and at least as far as I'm concerned it's one of the best PaC games of the 90's.

Syberia games are great.
The Syberia games are brilliant, but maybe more appropriate for someone who does like point and click games. Their atmosphere largely relies on the ambient sceneries and music, as they burn into your brain while you are wandering around pixel hunting and combining inventory tools. With a quick, aided walkthrough, they are not that detailed, or narrative-driven as something like Dreamfall.

I too am not a fan of point and click adventure games, but I enjoyed the Monkey Island series and Grim Fandango back in the day

Hocus Pocus Pink Panther...Seriously.

As far as point & clicks go it's pretty damn good. Except I can't get it to work on Win7.

I love The Longest Journey, the story was great. I haven't played the other games in that series though.

My personal favourite point-and-click adventure is the first Broken Sword game. The story is a fantastic treasure hunting/murder-mystery that's funny when it needs to be but is also able to be quite dark and ominous. It did this balance far better than the sequels did. The second one relied much more heavily on gags, the third and fourth are more inconsistent, while the most recent one is mechanically and aesthetically great, but has a ridiculous amount of fanservice in it.

I don't tend to like the overly jokey games much. Sure, a good sense of humour is essential, but I like it when it's set in a believable world and has a lot of intrigue. That's why I'm not too fond of some of the classics like Monkey Island and Sam and Max, though they are fun.

I was recommended I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream. I'll try it this weekend and tell you if it's worth it.

PS: Right now it's in discount at Steam.

I'm only mentioning this because I haven't seen anybody else mention it but(and I have just finished playing it, so take this with a grain of salt if needed),

Charnel House Trilogy. It's pretty new and it's a psychological horror game that stars a little known man named Jim Sterling.
It's not the greatest but it's horror done right.
I actually just played through that yesterday. Short as hell(90 minutes from start to finish), but also creepy and haunting. I will admit that Jim Sterling-son's voice initially felt distracting because of all his internet reviews and jimquisitions and such. Though I soon got over it.

Similar to that is "The Last Door" which is a Victorian horror episodic series that seems equal bits Poe, Lovecraft and David Lynch(there's a fair bit of mind screw). 6 episodes are complete as of right now and each episode is maybe an hour long. Just be warned, though, that the graphics are deliberately pixelated for aesthetic(and likely budget) reasons and while there are a lot of questions raised, so far there haven't been many answers given.

It's unclear just how many episodes or seasons(they're halfway, maybe, through season 2 right now) they plan to do. It's made by a small studio in Spain and each of their episodes are crowdfunded. However, I believe the first few episodes are free if you want to see if it's your thing.

Or on the less horror side, the Blackwell series, which involves 5 games(4 of which are bundled) is quite good. It's about a woman who can see ghosts, including one who is pretty much stuck to her, and her job is to help them pass on by helping them realize that they've died(which is a bit harder then it sounds). More mystery, with the occasional bits of horror thrown in, but quite compelling. The first game has the usual adventure game puzzles(and a huge info dump early on) but the later games tend to be much more about investigation and interrogation to learn important facts and where to go next. The art style and writing gets better with each game as well.

Monkey Island 1, 2 and 3 are all pretty good, though most people would put 1 and 2 as much better then 3. Nobody really likes Escape and the Telltale Monkey island games are generally considered decent.
This^

If you're going to play one point and click game, make sure it's the three Monkey Island ones.

Not much for point and click either, but I got the Syberia games through a cheap bundle a long time ago and really enjoyed them. Might be worth checking out.

Isn't playing Maniac Mansion kinda of required to get into the story of Day of the Tentacle?

Not even remotely. It is it's own self contained story with only a passing mention of the events of Maniac Mansion.

Especially considering you can infer enough from DOTT itself to figure out what happened in Maniac Mansion, and at least one version of DOTT has the Maniac Mansion Ed's Computer if you really must know(and don't want to read the wikipedia summary).

Only Point and Click series I've played was the Blackwell series (haven't played the last one yet because I don't want it to end). They are really good (for my inexperienced tastes) and lack any overly stupid puzzles. Very little pixel hunting puzzles and there are guides for them all. All of them are fairly cheap on Steam, the new/final one "Epiphany" is the most expensive but its still cheap for the quality. Fully voice acted, developer commentary in them, available on Steam and they all use the AGS which is a fairly good engine for Point and Click, even if it is a bit weak in options.
