Poison: Reese's Peanut Butter Cups (especially when they're frozen), Beer, and Cigarettes
Discipline: Physical Fitness. I keep a 40lb back pack packed so I can go hiking for miles. Try it sometime, gives you time to yourself to just think and relax. And, it's good for you. Just stay hydrated. (I got into doing that while I was in the Army and actually enjoyed.)

Edit: a comment on the alcohol. I'm the type of drunk that drinks, talks a lot (normally things that are funny...I've learned to stay away from hard liquor), falls down (99% of the time I make it to the bed), and fall asleep. Can somebody explain the point of mixing Red Bull with alcohol? I want to drink, get drunk, fall down, and go to sleep. NOT get hyper and stumble around.

It probably isn't too bad, but I'm addicted to green iced tea with ginseng and honey. It's delicious.

I guess I'd say I'm straight-edge, having never taken a drink or done any drugs, and certainly not planning on it.

For poisons it would too long list to name them all, but hey, as Nietzsche said "What doesn't kill us, makes us stronger" so I'm surely super powerful by now and should just get on with taking over the world. Unhealthy food, smokes, coffee, energy drinks ... thats all norm for me, part of each and every day.

When it comes to disciplines, there's very little to it, i never was a person to limit myself, more of an explorer wanting to check a bit of everything that life has to offer, be it good or bad. Only thing I decided not to mess myself with is drugs that require needles. Somehow only needles I tolerate are those needed for tattoos and piercing.
...I was ninja'd almost to the word, even down to the Nietzsche reference. I guess I'll have to fall back on my Heinlein quotes to best describe the discipline I ascribe to:
"I will accept the rules that you feel necessary to your freedom. I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do."

I've seen a few topics that touch on this subject or that are about one of these two ideas, but I thought I'd make one about both:

Everyone has thier poisons, something they are not necessarily addicted to but just love to consume, whether it be alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, or some kind of food/snack
Similarly, many people have their thing they don't do or guidelines they choose to follow, such as vegetarianism, straight edge, or some kind of diet. You get the idea

For example, my poisons would be energy drinks, I love them. I usually drink a can of Relentless a day which can't be good for me, but I just love the stuff. I also love getting tattooed, always looking forward to designing and getting my next one, aiming to get one or part of one at least every 6 months
My discipline is straight edge. I have to admit I have caved once or twice due to peer pressure, thus end up drinking a glass of rum now and again, but I generally follow the straight edge because I hate getting drunk and don't like any drinks apart from rum, nor do I like drunk people in general

So Escapists, tell me your poisons and your disciplines, past or present
I don't drink, smoke or do drugs but I would never describe myself as "straight edge" because I don't want to be associated with a movement that is all about puritanical preaching and telling others how to live. I don't care how others live, I make my choices for me, not anyone else. Be mindful that "straight edge" was never meant to be the hardcore quasi-religious abstinence type of deal that people are making it into these days. The word comes from the Minor Threat song of the same name which was really just about a young adult's conscious decision to make his own choices in life and not to ape the behaviour of his parents. It was about being an individual - ironic how the "straight edge" movement has twisted Ian MacKaye's intended message of individuality and breaking society's norms into one of conformity and following rules.

I used to be a chocolate addict but I quit that recently. I don't think I have any poisons unless you count various sexual activities that I won't go into but I don't think any of them are particularly poisonous. They're certainly not unhealthy...

Whenever I eat regular, cooked food and/or snacks I feel poisoned, but I just love chocolate (among other things). But that is because my discipline is meditation, and at times I detoxicate my body by eating only rice and/or vegetables for days, so regular food kinda "disturbs" me when I get back to it.

Poison: Coffee I guess, but I have an average amount of it, so I guess it's okay. Otherwise? Biscuits and Jacob's Crackers.

Discipline: No illegal drugs. Not hard to follow! Don't have many other than that - I can eat as much as I want because I can burn it off later, and I often do.

I know, I know, I know alllll about it. I'm a massive Minor Threat fan, I've got their entire discography and I know that Ian MacKaye said that he regrets the term because he never saw straight edge as a movement because "a movement has to go somewhere, and straight edge is just a lifestyle choice". I also know about groups like FSU who have given straight edge a criminal name
I found out about straight edge by getting into bands like AFI, watching their interviews and so on and just felt that the idea behind it is great. I abstain from drugs, smoking and alcohol because I don't enjoy them and, being such a huge punk rock fan I suppose calling myself straight edge just makes me (in a reall sad way, and I know it sounds sad) feel like a part of something. I like giving a name to the choices I make and knowing that there are other people out there who don't drink and smoke, because honestly a lot of my friends look down on me for not doing those things

My poison is random sugary refreshments that I find in the cupboard.

My discipline is not drinking until I'm 18.
