I loved the first gen of Pokemon. not played any of the subsequent games but I could understand a second gen. after that I thought they were milking the franchise BUT I recently managed to get Emerald and, though it hasn't arrived yet, I'm really looking forward to giving it a go. Thing is, currently there are 649 of the bloody things and I just thought 'could there be a 6th gen?'. I really hope not. There are enough and we don't need any more BUT it would be good if they could do something different with the ones there already are. Not so much a remake of the ones there are but binding them all together into one huge adventure that's a bit more than just becoming the Pokemon Champ while foiling an evil groups plans.

what would you prefer? something different or a new 100-150 pokemon being put into Pokemon Sun and Moon (they've pretty much run out of colours) for the 3DS?

In some ways, I think that over-saturation of Pokemon was what they tried to overcome when they designed Black & White (for any who haven't played or weren't aware, only the 150 or so new pokemon were available to use until you beat the game). I actually quite liked that idea, because it introduces enough Pokemon to stay fresh while stopping people from just using the same ones over and over, or moaning every time they go in a cave and have to fight several billion Zubats. Maybe implementing a system like that every so often would do the trick. You are right in saying that a more original adventure would be necessary in those circumstances though, because otherwise, without new pokemon, the game would almost literally be a carbon copy of the previous one (even more than they already tend to be).

The main points I have against introducing new Pokemon are A) the fact that trying to 'Catch 'em All' has gone from a challenge to a potentially life-destroying feat of Biblical proportions, and B) the fact that the designs are getting a lot less original and diverse as time goes on. There are about a dozen Pidgey clones, and far too many cute electrical rodents. And the designs that are original are getting pretty damn awful. I mean:

Seriously? A bag of trash? That evolves by splitting? Are you even trying anymore?

To summarize, if they don't put new Pokemon in, they'll have to do something damn impressive to keep me interested.

^ totally agree. Each Pokemon iteration has a lot to live up too considering how popular and fun the originals were.

That said, this isn't really a franchise with a lot of latitude - at least not without alienating fans or moving into spins off like Snap.

So, considering how limited the original concept was, I think its quite amazing the games have managed to become so enjoyable. Mind you, I think a lot of my reasons for playing them are purely nostalgic.

But isn't this true of all Nintendo franchises? They're all the same after 20+ years.

I think they need to change it up a bit. If you look at it every gen is mostly the same. Young kid meets professor, gets a pokemon, beats gym leaders, beat evil criminals' plan, and then beats the elite four. I think they really need to change it up.

I have two ideas
1. Your are a pokemon not the trainer. I think that one has a chance to go in a lot of directions.

2.Maybe more of RPG in sense of "choice" and time going by (characters getting older) maybe you want to open a gym, maybe you want to become a professor, or what about you being the new "bad" guy. Again lot of open options there.

^I do think you being a gym leader, trainer angle would be interesting.

Starting off a title without once again being some kid on a new quest would be a nice change. However, someone at GameFreak or Nintendo might tell you that's the same like having Link not start off as some regular kid.
