Hello Escapist.

While searching the net I stumbled across this http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/45240/pokemon-news-8-january-2013/

Now I haven't played Pokemon since red :( but I really think that they might make an 3D open world Pokemon game on the WiiU.

What are your thoughts on this announcement?

It doubt it will be Gen 6 yet, because there's usually at least 3 years gap between generations. It might be a spin off, or a main series remake of the Gen 3 games, which I hope because I loved those games. And if it is on the 3ds then I worry I may be forced to buy one because I can't live without my pokemon.

Remember reading that they plan for the series to "evolve" in 2013, and an open world 3D game is what so many fans are just clinging to the chance of, right? Not sure just what the actual odds for something like that is, though. The new Mystery Dungeon will be a full 3D thing from what I've heard, but the main series hasn't really evolved that much since it started!

Gen 5 was released on 18.9.2010. If we go the normal route that Japan gets it first and the announcement does not mean a release in under at least 6 months than the 5th gen was pretty much 3 years long. And if gen6 is going to roll out then you can be sure to see it on 3ds.

A remake would technically be in the same gen and same gens are not released on different consoles. If it is going to be a 3rd gen remake then I would bet 100$ that it'll be on the DS. But I honestly don't see any reason for a 3rd gen remake. First and second both had a purpose: Allow access to exclusive Pokes for older gens (since you can't transfer from gen 2 to gen 3).

On Topic: I really hope it is gen 6. And as one of the few I don't want to see it on anything else than handhelds.
Was it really that long ago? Wow, seems like only yesterday that Gen 5 came out. In that case I suppose it could be a new generation. I'd really have liked a remake of Gen 3 though. Hoenn was my favorite region.

A 3D open world Pokemon game would be absolutely great, but based on pretty much every game in the mainstream Pokemon series... ever, it's not going to happen. (Colosseum was the closest we've ever gotten).

My money is on a new generation of Pokemon, a new region and new gym leaders, and we'll be fighting those gym leaders like we always do in the effort of beating the elite 4 and *insert evil team here*. Extra money if the final evolution of the fire starter is also a fighting type. The graphics will only be a slight improvement over Black and White 2.

The game may or may not have WiiU compatibility.
Typically every generation we see the same formula with only slight changes, and sometimes they even take two steps forward, one step back.

Gen 2 (gold, silver, crystal)---> Day and Night system, gender

Gen 3 (ruby, sapphire, emerald)---> Diving and berry growing, removed the day and night system (makes no sense), added weather effects and a desert.

(Fire) Red and (Leaf) Green remake---> Was anything new actually in this?

Gen 4 (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum)---> Gender differences in Pokemon sprites, swarms, global trade

(Heart) Gold and (Soul) Silver remake---> Partner Pokemon, somewhat 3D (environmental only)

Gen 5 (Black and White, Black 2, White 2)---> Moving Pokemon sprites, somewhat more 3D (environmental only), Dream World (Berry growing is here), removed partner Pokemon...

EDIT: Black and White were the first games in which Zubat was not found in caves, sadly that changed in Black and White 2.

Somewhere they added back in the Day/Night system, although I'm not sure what generation that happened on.

Gen 6 (predictions): No more use of friend codes, somewhat more more 3D (environmental only) (I just don't think Gamefreak will go there all the way). Maybe add partner Pokemon back in.

I predict another spin-off title, probably for the WiiU. Either something new or a continuation of a previous series like the console battle games.

They moved berry growing to the Dream World, a shitty flash game that is shit but gives you multiscale Dragonite and Poison Heal Gliscor...
You're right I forgot about the dream world...

A 3D Pokemon game is long overdue. Snap on N64 didn't really count because of the rail system. I'm just weary they'll make up another hundred-something batch of Pokemon.

I recall seeing on a retail Gamecube kiosk 3D Pokemon game called Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness so there's that. It didn't look like it was that different from it's handheld counterpart though but it was something.

Maybe it's a new Pokemon Coliseum that connects to B&W/B&W2. Maybe it's a 3D hand-held Pokemon game. Maybe it's an official MMO. Can't wait to find out.

I have been hoping for waiting for and looking forward to a 3D Pokemon MMO ever since WoW came out...... that was 2004 it is now 2013 that's 9 years if you don't want to do the math ( yeah a little less but still) and we still have not seen it, so I am not holding my breath.

You missed a bunch:

Gen Two: Steel and Dark types. Hold items and the Special split

Gen Three: Abilities, Massively fleshed out the berries, better storage system, Pokemon contests, Double Battles and the Battle Frontier

Gen Four: Physical/Special Split, Wi-Fi

Gen Five: Reusable TMs, Actual Story attempt?

Pokemon Snap 2
-It'd work pretty good for the WiiU pad.

IF you want '3D pokemon' just play a SMT game.

From reading through the comments it sounds like my opinion that the series is pretty stagnant holds some weight, a move to 3D could do them a world of good.

You would think a serious competitor would have risen up by now to challenge the series, especially as it's been essentially the same thing for nigh on 10 years. Is there any sort of alternative to Pokemon?
