So I've "recently" purchased a 3DS XL (Link Between Worlds Edition - nice!) and I'm really enjoying it. So I thought I'd get myself into Pokémon.

Now my question is this: What are the differences between X and Y, and what is the easiest starter for a complete and utter newbie (as in, I have NEVER played a single Pokemon game before)?

Are X and Y even worth getting now, or should I wait for Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby?

Help me Pokémon Masters, please!

The only differences between X and Y are the Pokemon that are catchable in game. (They want you to trade to get the others.) See here: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/X_and_Y#Version-exclusive_Pok.C3.A9mon

As for starters, just pick the one you like the most. Starter Pokemon are generally pretty well-balanced and will do well on your team through the whole game. If you end up not liking your choice, there's always trading and wild Pokemon to try out.

Ruby and Sapphire are coming out in November, so it just depends on whether you want to wait or not. There's no wrong place to start with Pokemon.

The differences between X and Y are purely cosmetic, and have nothing to do with difficulty, so you don't have to worry about that. There are some Pokemon that you can only catch in one game or another. And I don't know how much you know about the Pokemon universe, but every game has a few one-of-a-kind Pokemon in it known as "legendaries." X and Y have different legendaries, so you can't have both in one game unless you trade with someone else for it. These legendaries can be seen on the front covers of the games.

There's another thing that was introduced newly to X and Y called "mega evolutions," which are basically superpowered forms of a few select Pokemon that you can unlock during battle with a mega stone. In X you get a mega stone X, and in Y you get a Mega Stone Y. This just changes how a few Pokemon look when they mega evolve. For example, Mega Evolved Charizard Y looks like this [http://media-cerulean.cursecdn.com/attachments/5/859/mega_charizard.png] and Mega Charizard X looks like this [http://media-cerulean.cursecdn.com/attachments/6/165/mega_charizard_x.png]. As far as I know, there is no stat difference between X and Y mega evolutions.

But that's really unnecessary for you to know going in. To answer your question: no, there is no difference. When choosing which Pokemon game to start with, I always just look at the cover and decide which legendary I like better. There's online trading now so don't worry about Pokemon you can't catch in whichever game you choose, it's easier than ever to get whichever ones you want :)

All of the pokemon games are designed to be easily picked up even by very young kids, so if you're able to post here you probably won't have a ton of trouble just playing through the game. There are a lot of interesting numbers and mechanics under the hood, but you don't need to worry that much about them unless you're a stat junkie like me or you get hooked and want to get into the competitive scene. Like the others said, check serebii or bulbapedia if you want to see the different pokemon in a version, pick whatever you think looks cool, and go have fun. c:

I'd just wait for OR/AS, then in 2015/2016 go get Pokemon Z. That's what I'm doing.
