Use Psychic, Ghost and Dark attacks. (Those are super effective)
Don't use Ground attacks because Gengar has an ability called levitate which renders all ground attacks useless.

maybe try a different angle, a fire pokemon of s high strength, avoiding problems with his nasty attacks, and maybe try a 1 hit KO move, or you could always try this combo. Any move that inflicts sleep, lock on (I can't remember if this is the name or not), then any 1 hit KO, as long as he doesn't change his pokemon, it's garunteed death

Jeeesus christ , Pokemon is more famous than GOD!
Is it really that good?
It is if you make it good. In OP's case, not really, as he is not using it to the full potential. If you actually start to competitively battle, it becomes great fun, and a good time-sink.

Just wondering, is there anyone else feeling that they really know nothing about pokemon when they thought that they were "the very best, like no one ever was"?
Yeah... even I get that, with my 4 level 100s and 489 Pokédex, when people tell me about their, like 20 level 100s. Although I take solace in the fact that I raise the 4 Pokémon I liked, not the 400 that are strong.

"Back in my day...(Red/blue/yellow)" there wasn't ghost type...
Actually, there wasn't a Dark type or a Steel Type... Ghost was still there, albeit restricted to Gastly, Haunter and Gengar, the Ghost/Poison Types - Misdreavus was the first pure Ghost.

Edit: Also, can someone tell me what the *@?{@ lVs are?!
IVs are hidden stats generated when Pokemon are caught/bred/whatever from 0-31 per stat (HP/Atk/Def/SpA/SpD/Spe). They affect both the starting and final stats of the Pokemon.

Gastly/Haunter/Gengar were Ghost types. They were all immune to Normal attacks, even back in Red/Blue.

Another easy route is:

Have someone cast rain dance, switch to jolteon, use thunder, he's dead.

Jolteon is deadly with one of the highest speeds in the game and a really high sp.attack that take advantage of Gengar's average sp. defense.

The whole rain dance is just to ensure the hit by the way, 50% chance of hitting with thunder on the first turn too.

So it turns out that I know even less about pokemon than I thought I did. Oh man...

I must get my Gameboy and Pokemon cartriges sent over.

Try the FEAR tactic, it works and it also pisses your opponent off as well.

1. Get a Focus Sash item
2. Teach the Pokemon Endevour
3. Teach the Pokemon Quick attack
4. Do the above three on Ratatta

Teach a Ratatta Endevour and Quick Attack, give it the Focus Sash. When Ratatta gets one hit KO'd, Focus Sash will leave it with one HP, then you use Endevour, making the opponent have one HP as well, then use Quick Attack since it almost always attacks first and will do a minimum of 1 HP damage. Then you'll win.

Unless the opponent sees it coming, will work no matter what level you are. All the more funny if there's a huge level difference.
It only works if you have Kanghaskan. Normal doesn't effect ghost, but Kanghaskan can have an ability that lets it hit ghost types with normal moves.

Spiritomb - it has NO weaknesses :D
Actually, you can use Foresight (which every fighting Pokemon worth his salt has), and you can Close Combat it for super-effective damage and essentially an instant kill, since Spiritomb has, at best, average defense stats.

I haven't played since gold/silver (and they were a bit too over the top) and to be honest have no idea what's going on.

"Back in my day...(Red/blue/yellow)" there wasn't ghost type, there were 151 Poke'mon, and Charizard couldn't learn fly (he could in yellow but that was a lie).

Is it worth trying to play the new games coming out without playing all of the iterations in between?

Should I just give up and keep playing Red/Blue/Yellow? :(
Pokemon is better than it ever was. Anyone who says different is a fool. Go buy HG/SS; it'll give you the chance to get used to all the new mechanics (Double Battles, Sp. Def/Atk, Breeding, etc.) in the familiar setting of Johto. Oh, and this [http://www.smogon.com] will help you get into the competitive scene.

I'll just use this thread.

Is there anyone here that can assist me in RNG abusing, I don't understand shit no matter how much I read smogon's guide.

Objective is getting a shiny Azelf.

That, or have the Pokemon know Odor Sleuth as well, though I'm not sure a lot of FEAR Pokemon can learn that. Though that would made it more tricky.

It is MUCH easier to RNG something that you can get from an egg for a shiny. Also is there any particular part of the Smogon guide that you don't understand as I can't very easily summarise the whole thing.

Wobbuffet. Wobbuffet can probably survive a single Shadow Ball (if properly buffed), and you know it has all Special attacks. toss out Mirror Coat and you win. follow up next turn with Destiny Bond and you might take a second Pokemon down. at the very least, it's a free switch.

you can also try faster Psychics like Alakazam with Choice Scarf (for that tasty speed boost, just to make sure) I'm assuming that Mewtwo and Darkrai are banned... Psychic can ruin Gengar, but you have to hit him first, and hit him hard.

Blissey can wall Gengar fairly well, but has little to threaten it with. Snorlax is another decent Special wall and has Crunch to play with...

Only Articuno (or Smeargle, but it's useless in real combat) can use the OHKO tactic, using Mind Reader/Sheer Cold. Articuno is an awesome Pokemon, but it doesn't have the best defenses or speed, carries a Thunderbolt weakness, needs something else to Sleep (Articuno has Sing, i think, but 55% isn't accurate enough to rely on it), and must also be level 100 for Sheer Cold to work (OHKO moves don't work on higher-level Pokemon, even after Mind Reader/Lock-On).

If you want to do something really different, I'd suggest Magneton/Magnezone. It resists all of that Gengar's attacks and has high enough SAtk to seriously threaten it with Thunderbolt.

A Fire type is another good idea, but only Heatran (possibly banned) has the typing and stats to take on Gengar. (most are too slow, defensively weak, or have vulnerable secondary typing like Fighting or Flying)... oh wait, Houndoom... It has resistances, speed, and power. Nasty Plot and Dark Pulse put a big dent in Gengar too. Houndoom's defenses are a little low though.

If you want to be particularly mean, try a fast Pokemon like Ninjask or Jolteon equipped with Choice Band and Trick. Gengar looses it's item, gets no boost from the Band (as it raises ATK only), and locking it into a single move, making blocking it much easier. *edit* just make sure to U-Turn or Baton Pass away ASAP.
