Today I pre-ordered Pokemon Black version at Gamestop and I found myself wondering "I'm 21 is it weird that I'm still playing Pokemon games ?"
Now let me get one thing straight I only still play the "Main" RPG Color named titles so no Ranger, Mystery Dungeon or other spin offs, I haven't watched the anime since the Johto adventures and I give up long ago on the cards.
I mostly play out of nostalgic value and with my brother and some friends (I also pre-ordered White version for my brother whose turning 13 so we can trade/battle with each other just like we've done with ever Pokemon RPG since he started playing them.

Anyways I wanna know how many older (say late teens and onward) still play Pokemon games?
I'm not a current player, but the first Pokémon titles dropped in the US when I was 18. I played for long enough I went into my 20s easily. I see nothing wrong with it unless you're having around playgrounds asking kids if they want to play.

Would you believe me if I said a usual discussion about CoD with a bunch of dedicated CoD players once shifted into a Pokemon discussion?

Don't be daft. The only relevant question when it comes to entertainment is.... "does this entertain me?" If the answer is yes then all is good with the world.

I'm in my thirties and have black and white pre-ordered child friendly does not mean child only. The first Pokémon game I ever got was pearl; nostalgia isn't a factor in my playing (The first lot of games passed me by. I was a PC only player at 16; I spent every penny I had on a rig, meaning buying a handheld was out.)

These are just damn fine games with an nice world to play in and a complex strategy system at it's core. Sure they are a little iterative but the base game is solid, we just want better pretties and maybe a better story to improve things; black and white promise to deliver those.

As a bonus you can play for a few battles and put it away. left it for a few months? no problem, you can easily step back in where you left off and get back to training some monsters, capturing the legendaries or putting the finishing touches on a team.

And yes I've ordered both - one is for my daughter of six, presenting the opposite question to yours.
Is she OLD enough? I reckon the basic element based strategy is simple enough for her to understand, the story will interest her and it'll be social trading, battling and comparing with me. I don't expect her to be running competitive quality teams and tactics but she'll probably enjoy the game.

Not at all.
People think it's weird, but that's just opinion and popularity. They think it's nerdy to play videogames.

And image saved. Thank you for this.

OT: No. They are good games and if you enjoy them, good for you. Now then, my Mankey needs attention or he will loose.

I'm 15, I used to play Pokemon when I was younger.

But lately I haave had an urge to buy an old Gameboy Colour, and pick up Pokemon Blue again, just for the priceless nostalgia that comes with it (until I found out that pokemon blue is selling for about £75!) I also secretly wish that I had a DS, and more money so I could buy the new pokemon coming out.

So no, you are never to old. They say you are never too old to play games, what makes this any different?

nah you're fine, I'm 19 and I still play them, although i haven't played diamond or pearl, I think things just got a bit silly after silver and gold, ruby and sapphire where OK, but it just irritates me how difficult (or impossible) it is to get some of the original pokemon that didn't look like the design team threw 5 primary colours into a blender and attached 2 random types to whatever came out at the end.

Pokemon was just a phase for me from age 12 to 13. But I do remember the games being very good and addictive.

I still think that you shouldn't bother thinking about stuff like "is this strange?". If you like it, you like it. Don't sweat it.

This is an excellent rule of thumb, or thumb of rule, whichever it was[footnote]rumb of thule?[/footnote]:

Most importantly don't let anyone tell you that your too old for Pokemon or any game/show/movie you enjoy, just let the haters hate...
qoute apparently rule of thumb is sexist or at least thats what my physics teacher said.

anyways i play pokemon and so do my friends, it's a game for all ages really.

Question: Why? The Pokemon series are simple RPGs to casually play that offer enough complexity for a thriving metagame. What is so wrong with it?
Still a childrens game
All games are children's games. Thats why they're called GAMES.

I'm 19, and I still play Pokemon (I've been playing it since the first Gameboy Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition came out). Not entirely sure about Black and White yet, though.

You are never too old for video games. And anyone whom says otherwise either is a workaholic, their significant other hates video games, part of a peer group that looks disdainfully upon video games in general or.. any combination of those three.

That said, Pokemon is more of an intense strategy game than Starcraft. I hold that belief firmly.

It's sad that you're asking that question.
Personally, as a trainer since the release of Gen 1 and having bought every game to date on it's release date, I find your lack of faith disturbing.

Who cares how old you are? Pokémon is certainly not a children's game. Not one bit. Besides, we are the generation in which Pokémon was born. If anyone should be playing the games, its us. We are the Pokécraze generation. We are the ones who woke up super early to watch the anime. We are the ones who brought our gameboys to school and "used the restroom" in order to get a little more time with our Pokébros. We are the ones who bought pop-tarts with pokéball and pikachu sprinkles, and cereal with pikachu marshmallows.

This is our franchise! You should be proud of it! You should be proud to be a trainer. Wear your pokéwalker out in public! Play your DS while waiting in line for movies!

And when the day comes, March 8th will no longer be considered just a day, but as the day when trainers far and wide declared with one voice,

"WE WILL NOT GO QUIETLY INTO THE NIGHT! WE WILL NOT BACK DOWN FROM A FIGHT! WE'RE GOING TO TRAIN ON! WE'RE GOING TO BE THE VERY BEST!"

For on that day, we celebrate Black and White's release day!
i wasn't going to buy black/white, now i think i will.

Funnily enough, the more you grow up, the less this bothers you. As the cartoon posted earlier illustrates, it's only really adolescents that tend to care about whether the game they're playing is a children's game or not. After that comes the mid-twenties NOSTALGIA = WIN phase, and after that you're *well* past the point where you feel like you have anything to prove.

If Pokemon is fun, play it =) I know I do.

There's really no age cut-off for any sort of entertainment, as long as you enjoy it. The only reason things are criticized as "childish" is because in most cases adults aren't able to derive any enjoyment from those things.

Doesn't keep it from being a damn fun game to play. Have you never gone back to those games you played in your childhood and relive the fun and nostalgia? I love to play my old pokemon versions with the knowledge I now hold about them, running through Kirby Super Star with as few powers or helpers as I could, and playing Tetris, my first game, as long as I can before the game just throws a series of 20 s blocks and the speed is maxed out.

Definitely not too old for Pokémon. As has been said before, if you like it, then like it, no matter what someone else may think. If you enjoy it, then have fun enjoying it rather than worrying about whether others find it strange that you enjoy it.

Nah, it's not. The TV series might be aimed at kids, but it's not a kid's game.
