Pokemon is basically the call of duty of rpgs. minimum improvments over the games, and are for the most part quick cash grabs.

OP: you asked. So I don't want any of you peoples accusing me of trollin'.
It's booooooooring. I'd rather watch the last season of Friends than sit through five minutes of dragon-sheep stats, goofy names and turn-based fighting.
Well, naturally. Pokemon's awesome, but friends is clearly better (with regard to the TV series).

Pretty much everything about it. It's simple and accessable, while having TONS of hidden depth for those who wish to dive. It's cute and cartoony, but with plenty of ass-kicking designs in there to shake things up. Its a game about collecting, but you're never penalized for NOT collecting. Hell, the most recent outing, Black and White, managed to patch up one of my niggling gripes about the series, having a non-existant story. Sure, it's not Shakespear, but it's really not that bad.

Dislike:

People who say that the series hasn't changed in 15 years.

Okay, I'm cheating a bit here, but it's genuinely a bit annoying that I keep hearing this. Pokemon has evolved (pun not intended) ALOT since Red and Blue. Those of you who truely think that Pokemon is still exactly the same game, I'd like you to participate in a little experiment. Play Black/White for 5 hours or so. Then, play Red/Blue for 5 hours or so. You'll see the difference.

I like to equate Pokemon to Mario, some things stay the same, but only the things that don't need changing. "The battle system hasn't changed!" you might say. True, but changing the underlying fundamentals of Pokemon would be like making a Mario game where he can't jump. "But you're always beating 8 gyms, then an evil team, then the Pokemon League!" others might say. But just how many times has Mario stomped Bowser? "But Mario eventually went 3D!" others yell. Pokemon has added new attacks, abilities, split physical and special moves, added two new types, included held items, and added almost 500 new critters since the first games. The underlying mechanics may be the same, but the framework AROUND it has changed considerably since the old days.

So people, please stop saying that Pokemon is still the same game all these years later, it's just not true.
Sir, if I could give you a medal I would. It's almost like you're my clone, because I agree with everything you say. Internet high-five!

As for myself...

Likes: Great music. Creative and cool looking Pokemon, like Vanilluxe (Ice Cream cone) and Klinklang (the gears). In my opinion, creative means something that hasn't been done before. With each generation they add nothing but creative Pokemon!

Also, the depth behind it. I'd probably take hours trying to explain it to someone.

Dislikes: The whole "two games per generation that have negligible differences between each other" thing. Love the games, played since Red and Blue. Still confused as to the reasoning behind the two-game system.

All in all, I'll probably remain a fan of the series to the day it dies. Or I die. Whichever comes first. It's got some irritating problems but remains incredibly fun! Even competitively!

Honestly I don't think "too many pokemon" is a reason to dislike the series. It's like saying "AH! Too well-defined variety!". The goal hasn't been to collect all of them since gold/silver version. I personally like that it's becoming more and more less likely to meet someone with a poketeam using the same pokemon as you.

I like the games a lot but a few of my dislikes have put me off buying any more of the games.

1. Only one save file. This is a big problem for me. I often like playing through a game again, just for fun. But being forced to lose the save file that I've put over a hundred hours into? No thanks. This just screws over the games potential for replayability.

2. Why does it take so much to time to prepare for competative play? I get that the complexity is part of the appeal, but complexity doesn't require such an absurd time sink. I mean it can take upwards of four hours just to breed a pokemon of a useful nature. God help you if you're after a specific nature, or are going for good IVs as well. Then theres the unique, one shot pokemon like legendaries, which probably double the time involved. Factor in the levelling process and EVs and, well, I'm sure you can see why I think it's ridiculous. And it's such a shame because the competative aspect looks like so much fun once you have good enough pokemon.

3. The increasing number of pokemon that can only be acquired through special, real-world events. I mean think about how annoying it can be when you suspect that DLC was ust cut at the last minute from the release version of a game. Now imagine that you couldn't buy and dowload the DLC that you should by rights already have. No, instead you have to go to a once in a lifetime convention that may not even be taking place in your country. I really don't see why this aspect of pokemon doesn't piss more people off.

So unless something insanely awesome happens with the next generation of games, or one of my big issues gets fixed, then I doubt I'll be adding any more Pokemon games to my video game collection.

Reasons to like: The fact that they turned that annoying beeping when your Pokemon is almost dead into a pretty rocking theme, along with a lot of the other music.

DENNNNNNNNNNNNIS.

Reasons to dislike: Some of the new Pokemon designs.

THIS FUCKING THING. I was playing Pokemon Black during my break at work today and seriously screamed when it popped up.

it's the same why a lot of nintendo does ends up not pissing people off....people give nintendo a free pass out of nostalgia. which is complete bullshit.

nintendo does it = okay

activison/ea/sony/microsoft does it = evil corporation after money/evil lazy corporation.

it's quite hilarious

(By the way, Scolipede is a hell of alot more awesome than Pinsir)

This is the problem, people claim new ones are over designed but refuse to specify which ones leading to hypocracy. The 1st generation has the same amount of ugly ones as for each other generation.

I still fail to see how pokemon are "Over Designed" EXCEPT for Emboar, that one was unneeded in design.
I'm sorry, I hate responding to dissagreement but I'm an original poke'fan so I have seen the light, so I felt it was my duty to follow this one up.

Pinsir has f***ing pincers on its head! Which means it can use a move called 'Guillotine' It also has both legs and arms with decent reach. He looks angry, he has a mouth full of teeth and in the view of the original Red and Blue games and several following, he is Scyther's Equal! Scyther's Equal.. How scary is that thought???
Your new generation pokemon is just another bloody caterpilla design. I think Awesome goes to Pinsir there

As for claims about the newer pokemon being over designed, that doesnt mean they recieved more attention from the designer, what we mean when we say that is that almost every one is either covered in random patterns on its brightly coloured skin or is an exsisting pokemon or animal (and inaminate objects too it seems) with exaggerated or uneeded features all in attempt to make it look like something new and exciting when really its just an over-dressed blank canvas.

As for the new moves.. Bullet Punch, Dark Void, Dragon Pulse, Punishment, Judgement, Flare Blitz, Nasty Plot.. What the heck is this crap?? Pokemon battle eachother, they're not trying to burn down eachothers homes, buture family members and send you into an alternate universe and lazer beam you.....

And again with the over designing..
-Leaf Storm- is just -Razorleaf- but BIGGER AND MORE AWESOME! because apparently one type of move that lets pokemon fire sharp leaves isnt enough for a skilled player.
-Head Smash- is just -Skull Bash- but i'm guessing 'Smash' is a much more awesome word..
-Shadow Force, Shadow Claw, Shadow Sneak, Night Slash- Yes we get it, shadows are cool and evil and make us all feel like ninjas... yaay.
-Stealth Rock- What the fuck??? Rocks have the ability to move silently now?? Oh wait.. 'Stealth=Ninja=Cool I forgot.
-Me First- ...what?

I could go on..

Appologies.

Never liked Pokemon. Nor Beyblade, Yuh Gi Oh or any of those shitty cartoon merchandise-cashins to come out of Japan. It's badly written, badly drawn, has no plausible fucking story, and bores me to death. The games were horrible and the merchandise was just a rebranded game from centuries ago (just like all the cartoons - Beyblades were spinning tops for fuck sake).

Reasons to like: It's a deep, engaging strategy game that younger kids can enjoy on a surface level. It's got cute or badass monsters to use, and you can play with your friends.

Dislike: Exclusive Pokemon you can only get via RL events, exclusive features you can only use with RL friends. I understand that gaming is more common in Japan, but seriously, I don't want to have to drive to my friends' house to connect with his game just so I can use a damn feature in my own (speaking of Black City/White Forest, of course.)

As for "waaah the new Pokemon suck!", click spoiler for images.

Generation 1. It's a badass dragon.

Generation 5. It's a badass crocodile.

Generation 1. It's three mechanical pokemon combined into one.

Generation 5. It's three mechanical pokemon combined into one.

I'm incredibly sick of people complaining about how the new Pokemon designs or names "aren't original." Yeah, Gen 5 gave us a stupid ice cream pokemon. Gen 1 gave us Mr. Mime, Jynx, Diglett-Dugtrio, Magnemite-Magenton, Koffing-Weezing... etc. Yeah, Gen 5 gave us stupid pun names like Timburr-Gurdurr-Conkeldurr and Trubbish-Garbodor. Gen 1 gave us the *AMAZINGLY UNIQUE* names like Seel (for... a seal) and Dewgong (for a dewgong) and Beedrill for a bee that has drills.

Every generation has its share of awesome and stupid Pokemon.

HAHAHA! Seeing the light! That ALMOST got me to laugh.

Guillotine is worthless and banned by the way, by the time you hit something your opponent would have gone through 5 out of your 6 pokemon

By they way, you should pay attention more to what the moves do than see their names and think, "Gee Rocks move stealthly?"

Then again Im assuming your trolling so the least I can do is treat it as amateur in knowledge.

As for Scolipede I hope you realize that there hasn't been a 10 ft tall centipede that runs on 4 legs and eats things.

Also I do know what over designed means, Jynx and Mr. Mime are prime Examples of this. Same goes for Emboar if you bother to look it up.

I like the concept of a world where the worst crime is a getting your Pokemon stolen.

I like games where you go on an adventure through towns, forests, etc.

It's great to have control of powerful creatures.

Alot of people are nice and friendly.

I dislike caves. Repel needs to be 2 for 1.

well im probably one of those mad completionists yahtzee knows pokemon is for. i havent actually caught them all since the first games, but simply trying to has brought me enough entertainment for the subsequent generations.

like the creator, i love the collection aspect, i love building your own team of fighters, and i love finding all the little secrets; the hidden items, bonus dungeons, and not-so-obvious to find pokemon. B/W was kinda disappointing in that regard; not only was the main legendary REQUIRED to be caught, but their was only 1 'runner' (call me crazy, but i loved hunting down the 3 dogs in gold/silver), and the other legendaries were all sitting in some barely hidden cave with no real challenge or mystery to finding them.

also, i could get mew with a glitch, and that was rewarding to find out and even more rewarding to pull it off. in every other generation, i am REQUIRED to go to some event that is probably a pain in the ass to find or simply will never exist outside japan, so that really kills the actual collection aspect of later generations.
