Jesus, this will never change now will it?

Reminds me of a similar situation I've been through when I used to play AD&D. Me and a couple of friends had stolen a teacher's keys and broke into our school and stole stuff. And destroyed stuff.
The local police asked us about our hobbies after we got caught and immediately assumed that playing AD&D (or "that card game" as they put it...) must've had something to do with our motivations.
Besides, you know, us just being rebellious teenagers back then.

If only he'd gone and watched the D&D movies instead, we could have finally got them banned :p

well we go full circle.

way back in the day it was science and logic that would be the downfall of humanity.

on and off its been religion that would be the downfall.

then we march furthur on in time and rock n roll was going to be the downfall.

then we go a bit farther and we had d&d.

them we went back to music with ozzy osbourne, rap, marylin manson, all being blamed as causes for violence and suicide.

now the new boogy man is video games.

and of course we have had drugs that are a constant favorite for the downfall of civilization.

we will recycle them as things need be. and the occasional wack job mentions some music artist, or video games, or smoking a joint, and AH HAH, that must be what made them do it.

there is no doubt that for a mentally disturbed person anything can set them off from books, to movies, to music to games to fanstasy role playing pnp stuff. the only problem is when eggheads and politicians try and snowball it into something more than what it is. a fd up person that did something fde up because they were fd in the head.

or maybe just maybe, he went over to play video games to relax and think of something else.
Course that is what they do!

It's bad enough to link crime to videogames, but this is so flimsy it's absolutely rediculous.

It's like saying "After the murder, I went out for a bit of fresh air to clear my head" and the police immediately proclaim, AH HA! So it's all AIR's FAULT!

QUICK EVERYONE! WE NEED MAKE AIR ILLEGAL!

OH NO! A group of air has surrounded me! Quick call the cops! No!, NO!, NOOOOO-

edit - This ---> q <--- is the "q" that was incorrectly in between the correct "Q" and the "u" in Quick. I will leave it here for you forumites to punish. May justice be served.
OH NO! THE AIR HAS CORRUPTED HIM! WE HAVE TO KILL HIM!

Here's something I'm curious about. If this guy had slapped on some headphones and listened to a few hours of Toby Keith after he committed his crime, would investigators be pursuing the "country music motive?" What if he'd decided to squeeze in one last all-night marathon of The Closer before he went to jail - would they be looking at the "Kyra Sedgwick motive?" What if he'd gone golfing, or went to church and spent the entire night praying for forgiveness? Would those "motives" be investigated?

What I see relevant in this case is the fact that videogames are still so quickly pounced upon as a potential cause of violent, antisocial behaviour. What's of concern here is not whether games make people violent (obviously they don't) but the attitude that persists among a significant portion of the population that they can.
My thoughts EXACTLY, they wouldn't have considered any other activity a motive, only video games. It's amazing how ignorant people can be, I remember the good old days when people were blaming music more. The newest form of media with anything inappropriate in it will always be blamed for a while, until the next new thing comes up.

He was reported to have killed the girl, and then raped her afterwards.

Yeah, good luck trying to make a case on how Dungeons & Dragons influences people to kill people, and then rape their mutilated corpses.

"But, your honor, there are dragons in the game he played.. so clearly your honor, clearly.. this is strong evidence."

Epic douche bags.

Did no one stop think that maybe, he's just a deranged psychopath? That has obvious mental problems? How in the holy hell does a game cause someone to murder and rape.. ? I'd seriously like to know this, so I could avoid it myself. Dangerous times.. one day you're playing WoW, the next day.. you're raping dead bodies. Bad times.. bad times indeed.

And now here's the big question, do these idiots ever think, 'Oh maybe he played violent games because he was violent' and not the other way around?

I'm starting to think that gaming is going to a criminal scapegoat forever, or at least until the next big metal/'emo' band comes around.

Its a bit like how in a Pheonix Wright game, You can give a completely wrong piece of evidence, and then the judge will ask what the meaning of it is, then Wright will mumble that its obvious, then lose a life for stupidity.

oh wow, thats really original. blaming video games for violent behavior. it couldnt POSSIBLY be bad parenting, bad environment, drugs, or just someone is a being a terrible person.
