That's a REALLY good way of neutralizing the store owner - by making him pity you.

I mean, what's the store owner going to do after that? Follow the thief with a shotgun knowing he got kids to feed? I bet the store owner would feel bad even if the thief got caught.

Maybe he needed the money because he couldn't get a Job due to the previous crimes on his criminal record? At least he was polite but a better proposition would have been to ask if he could get a job at the store.

Wow, there sure a lot of cynics here at The Escapist.
Has anybody considered he did it simply because he didn't have a choice? And that he was trying to make it as easy as possible? Thats also a possibility.
He did have a choice. He had a choice not to rob someone, but he did. What if the guy he robbed actually owned that store himself and now he's $$ down to feed his own family.

As "nice" as he was about it, he still commited a crime, jail/fine whatever, he deserves it.

If you're going to rob someone, there's no reason you can't be polite while you're doing it.

Ah, for a return to the days of the Gentleman Robbers, those sweet, by-gone days of a simple sorry, after being beaten and mugged. Imagine the stories we'll be able to tell our children!

"No really, Tommy, this guy mugged me, but he said sorry, and he didn't actually pull a gun or a knife!"

Uhhh... he robbed the guy.

Doesn't matter if he thanked him, or said please, or held up his pinky finger.

He still robbed the guy.

Fuck him.

Uh...
Well, that's... gracious, I guess.
Still a dick move to rob him.

Theft is theft...and vice-versa :)
But the fact that he seemed conflicted makes me sympathetic to his situation.

Reminds me of the story where a man's laptop was stolen but all his data was mailed to him in the form of a USB drive or something like that.

"Stand, sir, and throw us that you have about ye:
If not: we'll make you sit and rifle you."

I saw this story a few days ago in a newspaper, and (unfortunately?) it ends with the guy being arrested and jailed for a fair long time. So he may not get chance to make good on his pledge.

I wonder if he would have?

any excuse to put that song on! I love it!

OT: It is quite heartwarming, but very sad.

I think I'd be the same way about it.

"Um... terribly sorry, but I'm going to have to rob you. I have this gun here... it's not very powerful, and I'm not 100% certain it will work, but it would still hurt a lot, and I don't want to use it really. If you could just put the money in this bag, please. Thanks very much. Have a good day! Well... you know... after this of course..."
