Well, what do you call a girl who clearly has no respect for herself and hence puts pictures of her naked body on the internet? Definitly not an upstanding citizen of Quebec.

And way to make a gross generalization. I never at any point said all women were sluts. I simply stated that this girl was one. I have plenty of respect for women. Just not for ones that do what she did.

By calling her a slut, you disrespect all women. In using sexist language like 'slut' you demean all women.

How is calling her what she is demeaning to all women? It's not (and I am a woman). If I was posting nude pictures of myself online (or anything else sexually explicit) I'd be a slut.

Now, calling women by names about something THEY HAVE NO CONTROL OVER (IE like calling a black person the N word, or a chinese person by their racial slurr) is demeaning.

She had control over every action of posting herself up nude on the internet/what ever else she was doing: she is a slut.

He did not call her a slut for no reason other than it being something to refer to them by derogatorily (like calling a black person the N word) but it was based upon knowledge that she is a sexually explicit 12-year-old.

I felt in no way demeaned by him calling HER a slut. If he had said "women are all sluts" or some generalized comment like that, I'd rip him a new one.

Oh, and although "slut" originated (and may be written in the dictionary) as referring only to women, language evolves and I hear it all the time being used to refer to both genders (same as whore and *****. Though "*****" strikes my funny bone.)

Simply put, the problem is that "slut" is a loaded term which problematises female sexuality. The insult is premised on an implicit understanding that women in general should be sexless, or at least subscribe to a hegemonic Judeo-Christian sexual morality which prizes innocence and physical self denial, and that those who act in any way that can be defined as sexual are deviant and repulsive. The idea of "slut" is one that is closely tied to the repressive sexual politics of the past.

Using the term therefore invokes its historic significance, just as it does when historical racial categorizations are used.
