Some of you may have heard about how Oprah wants the 2016 summer Olympics to be held in Chicago.
While its true the Olympics haven't been in America in a very long time I think we could do a little better than Chicago. I just think Oprah wants the publicity, but I digress. So I have another question, where do you think the 2016 Olympics should be held?

Is there actually a bid by chicago up and running then? If there isn't the entry date for 2016 bids is long gone, so it's moot point.

While Chicago is a beautiful city and it would be cool to have it there, I wouldn't really care if it's not.

The other cities bidding are Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo, and Madrid. All of which would be fine locations as well, I'm sure.

Erm, Atlanta 1996?

Salt Lake City 2002?

Ring any bells?
i guess i should have researched the topic a little more but by 2016 it will have been 14 years since it was held in america

All three are better options than Chicago. As as for the Olympics not having been in America for while considering that they are only every four years 14 (or 20 if you don't count Winter) is not a long time, especially considering there are deserving countries that have NEVER hosted them.

olympics are every 4th year, so the salt lake city couldnt have been in 02.

I think another country should get a chance to hold the olympics who have not done before.

you have a point but a lot of those countries are pretty small and don't really have the space or the money to build huge olympic stadiums

I agree that the "Olympics haven't been in America in a long time" comment was asinine. But why are the other 3 better options than Chicago? I'm not saying you are wrong, it's just the only one I've been to so I don't know much about the others and I'm curious. Unless you are just spewing the standard "I hate America" sentiments that seem to abound on these boards.

Winter Olympics happen every four years too, always 2 years apart from the Summer games.

I was there so it definately happened!

The Moon. It's neutral territory... For now.
Damn Moonians.

I don't care where they are held. They suck bigtime. But it is nice to see new places get to host it. London hosting it? They already had their chance! Twice before!!

Same for Athens, Los Angeles and Paris. STOP BEING SELFISH! It has NEVER been hosted in the entire continents of South America or Africa. If the FIFA World Cup can be held in such locations then I'm sure such they accommodate a few sand pits for the athletes to play in.

k can we establish that salt lake city was a winter olympic event and as such is 2 years off of the summer games. so it was in 2002 end of story...

When 2012 comes round it will be 64 years since the UK held the Olympics. That's a resonably long time, the US has a while to wait for the next Olympics I think, they've hosted it more times than anyone (4). Only London and Athens have hosted more than 2 games with 3 each (technically London has hosted 4, but one of those was 1944).

I thought L.A and New york were the US bids for the next Olympics, NY certainly has had a ton of new sporting 'stuff' built there in the last years or so. I think the next games after London will be in Europe on the mainland (France wants the Olympics a lot, so does Germany after their last two games were political Disasters).
